Hi!

I'm only just past the part in Toll the Hounds where Kef Tanar is described, so no spoilers please!

I did a Google search and also searched this board and a couple others but couldn't find anyone's attempt at actually listing/creating the rules. I did discover, however, that it was most likely inspired by the board game Carcassonne, however that game does not really have combat or troop movement but is a good place to start. Plus, with Carcasonne, a few extra pieces- most of which could be scrounged, and a couple of the expansions, this game could actually be played!

Any ideas? Or better a link to someplace that already has them?

A couple references:

What we know:

First part of the turn seems to be picking a tile, and placing it.

Sometime in the turn, dice roll (6 dice) for resources and seemingly, troops.

A "riposte round" where dice is rolled for some effect. In the game with Kruppe, it brings in 6 mercenaries under Kruppes control.

The mercenaries seem to 'work' for whoever has the mercenary coins.

Pieces: Soldiers, mercenaries, mages, assassins, spies, cavalry, and dragons.

One Gate tile.

"Ground defenses". Walls and perhaps defenses such as Abatis.

"Grand City Tiles"- 50+

At least one "Keep" tile, probably more.

Towers.

All tiles aspected in light, dark, and shadow. Doesnt say how it affects gameplay though.

6 Mercenary Pieces (6 in the game with Kruppe, 5 in the game with Spinnock).

At least 5 Dragons, which can only be brought in after the gate tile is placed.

"High Mages", "Elite Cavalry" : Upgradable pieces it seems like.

1 king or queen per player.

A "money system", for "points" and probably upgrading troops, fortifications, etc (and a gambling aspect in the book).

Another player can become a vassal of another.

Some type of battle system.

There are battles in ... I think it was TTH, between an Andii and a Human with other players.

Is that what you are referring too, as I cannot recall Kruppe ever playing it?

There are two games we actually see in Toll, which both have Spinnock and Seerdomin, and two other players. I don't remember the Kruppe game either? Care to refresh if it's in GotM or MoI?

Edit: Welcome to the Empire!

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Page 57 in my version of the book(TtH) section begins with "Was it habit or some peculiar twist in family traits that gave Scorch his expression of perpetual surprise?" The game is Kruppe vs. the two thugs Scorch and Leff. I assumed it was Kef Tanar because it refers to Scorch and Leff as "two hapless kings". It also mentions the "Mercenary's Coin" and also a "toss of the knuckles" that brings in 6 mercenaries. It doesn't get very detailed. It really seems to me that its the same game, plus a little while later it specifically mentions that the game has "spread as far as Darujhistan".

Ah, most definitely. I had overlooked that. Nice pick-up.

Mmm, it's one of the things that I read and thought "that would be awesome!" and never really got back to :D It did sound extremely complicated to me - too many things not mentioned to really get a proper idea of the game, but if someone was going to try, I would heartily approve :D

Well I just got to the second game of Kef Tanar in TtH, I havent had much time to read lately. No help there though. Are there any more games of Kef Tanar in subsequent books? If so please post what "rules" it mentions here, trying to avoid spoilers of course.

I suppose we could send an email to SE but im sure that would take months, if he even gets it and reads it...

So, lets make the rules!

Any suggestions?

Okay, it seems like everyone else here who started Toll, like me, finds the idea of Kef Tannar fascinating.

Sounds like a cross between miniture gaming, chess, and magic (the card game) with some minor economics thrown in. I'm up for trying to figure out some rules...unless SE is going to publish them in his Encylopedia Malaz.

Ok the game is going along pretty wel but there is still tons of work, so we could still use some people who would like to help out.

Also we need a person with even a tiny bit of art skills to help design the map, thanks.

Reading about Kef Tanar was the highlight of the earlier parts of TtH, so I'm greatly looking forward to seeing what you guys can do with it.
