One last thing: Why should Erikson's idea of military resemble modern military? Aren't there different miltary systems that more closely proximate the circumstances in Erikson's world.

For example, weren't the demographics of the military in Europe during the Middle Ages very different? I thought at that time soldiers were primarily people from the upper classes that got screwed over by the system of primogeniture.

Alternatively even in modern times their are other systems. Generally in Israel all males have to spend a few years in the military.

OMG!!!111 My dad has been in the british army for the past 25 years and hes a lot cleverer than most people. He didn't join because he couldn't afford college/university, he joined because he was proud to fight for his Queen and Country.

That^^ is one of the most ignorant statements ive seen on this forum..... Posted Image

edit: I just saw your later post, which kinda apologised for the 'broad, sweeping generalisation'

*Wrenches the topic back on topic* I did the unthinkable friday night. I picked up Eye of the World and started reading it. All I can say is this: If only the series hadn't become a monster...

...it might be half descent. Posted Image

Fizban, your just weird imoPosted Image. Do you get so passionate and hateful about all authors that you try and dislike? Or do you just resent the fact that an author is making millions from something you dislike or is it mb you are all pissed off cause your fav author who no doubt is a litery genius isn't as popular as old RJ?

It would have been better if the main man Rand was a more complex character. The idea of the three girls falling head over heals for this guy is stretching credibility. Where's his charisma/attitude. I'd have made him less noble, more cowardly and a hell of a lot smarter.

I think stanberg is referring to Rand's over the top leniency when it comes to women. Some might refer to it as a series of noble gestures. I like to think of it as BS.

It might help those people who are considering this series to have a list of the positive aspects and enjoyable features of WOT.

As for me, I can't think of any. Well, thats not entirely true, it started out well but it quickly nosed dived into a steaming mess that has no apparent ending.

I'm firmly in the couldn't care less category and I agree with practical all the common criticisms. E.g. slow story, 80% repetition, immature characters, and especially skipping 70-80% of each book and finding that you don't miss anything important = WOT (waste of my time).

In trying to understand what drives the average Jordanite, I read through the first 8 pages of this thread for a decent answer. I gave up, so if it's on page 10 or somewhere else in this thread, let me know.

But apart from answering the negative criticisms and defending the series, I still don't understand why people are so hooked on this "material".

Is it like junkies & drugs? You've started and now you can't help but to go on with it. Even though you know that it's causing cancerous tumors.

Do you like WOT because of or even in spite of all these criticisms? Do you enjoy reading repetitive passages or are you just waiting for moment that "Rand the man" finally gets all three women into his bed? (how many editions would that sell?)

I'm curious..........

Please disregard Fool's last remark. He is clearly confused and meant exactly what I said he did.

IT'S TRUE. IT'S TRUE.

@Loose Cannon.
To be honest, most of the people my dad works with are not the brightest bunch of people you could wish to meet.
I just read the post once and felt incensed by it, so had to post some kinda defence for my poor old dad Posted Image

RJ does not write epic fantasy... Almost all the characters are minor variations on long-held sterotypical fantasy characters.

Not sure what you mean here, but try naming one "epic fantasy" that doesn't have what you're referring to as stereotypical fantasy characters.

Every work of epic fantasy from Beowulf on has employed certain characters you would refer to as stereotypes... or that I would call archetypes. Usually including archtypical characters is not considered a flaw.

quote:
something vast in scope and depth. RJ's writing is to be honest little better than a kids book.

You don't consider a storyline involving 20+ major characters interacting over a field of at least ten large nations or city states vast in scope and depth?

I have yet to read any author whose work embraces a world as large and fully detailed as Jordans.

Well, maybe Erikson. The jury's still out. I've only read the first four books, and I suspect he's got a lot of world details still out there.

QUOTE] The plots is essentially Goodies vs. baddies. [/QUOTE]

This is, I would claim, the most important aspect of epic fantasy. This whole pile of "shades of grey" crap is a very recent invention. (Don't misunderstand, I'm not against it, per se. I actually find shades of grey quite interesting. But it ain't the be all and end all of fantasy.)

Good versus evil has been the core of nearly every epic fantasy ever written. Read Tolkien? Try and feed me a story about how Grendel is a shade of grey.

quote:
how long its going to take these outmanned and outmatched goody-2-shoes to defeat bigger stronger more powerful and generally superior enemies.

Ok, I'm with you there. I'm badly disappointed in the actions of the baddies in Jordan's books. Most of them have been woefully incompetent.

But that's a problem that shows up in nearly all literature and most movies. Without conflict, there's no interest in the story. Without challenge, there's no conflict. So the bad guy has to be competent. If the good guy is not as competent, you've got lots of tension, but the situation you're complaining about (farmboy beats evil overlord) exists. If the good guy IS as competent, you've got Erikson's scenario (demigods and clever plotters fight more demigods and clever plotters). And then people complain about all the "uber" characters.

Ok, I've rambled on enough. Ok, NastyMan, if you wouldn't consider Jordan epic fantasy, who do you think would fit the bill?

Cadsuane must be a psychiatrist as she is slowy removing this flaw from Rand. Oh creater above let her die horribly. Perhaps a pice offering to Semihrage. Than the main character can have his respect ( I mean manhood) back.
