Same thought here, Oponn. Didn'yt get Crossroads either, because every review I read was just bad... So, is it necessary to have read it, or is only about *howisshecalledagain* pulling her braid the whole time (i.e. plain boring and not necessary)?

Apart from 1 and 3, I enjoyed them all Posted Image Some were better than others, certainly. But yeah - I enjoyed CoT.

Seriously guys, after reading 9 of these tomes, are you gonna give up when he's so near the conclusion? I can't wait for the end.

@Oponn: if you plan on reading the last two books, then yes, you should read CoT. Very important plot happenings. If not, then I refer you to my above comment Posted Image

I've said before that I read all of these back to back, so for me they were really like one, very long, story. So I don't mind the "lack of stuff happening" as much as everyone else seems to. Sure, I can understand what people don't like about them, and there are some things that really do my head in, but generally I think they're great.

Why just female? Their all bad. I mean I have aggression control problems when reading about Perrin, Mat and especially Rand. And if I ever read again that they don't understand women when they do exactly the same thing... Posted Image

Aussie dollars?
Whatever currency, thats pretty good value, but you'd have to buy it when you got the book anyway... so isn't this just another Jordan money-making rip-off? Posted Image

It made sense to me:

If we don't keep our criticisms in check, Jordan fans are going to attack us with really bad fan fiction.

Uh...did I mention that RJ is a literary genius?

Determination,... or masochism Posted Image

Seriously, by the time the series really went downhill, from Path of Daggers, I had invested so much money and time in the damn thing, so it was not easy to give up.

I also have mixed feelings. However, mine are more a mixture of apathy and loathing.

A friend recommended the books to me - the same friend who recommended MBotF, actually - and they were mildly enjoyable escapism at first. Formulaic, to an even higher extent than usual: farmboy conquers the world? Rand al'Thor - check. Hideous misshapen trolls/orcs? Trollocs - check. Tortured, yearning exiled king-type? Lan - check. Annoying sidekicks? Merry - I mean, Mat - and Pippen - I mean, Perrin - check.

But it was fun. At least at first. Shadar Logoth, the Aiel, the Seanchan... all the nifty little magic tricks. But when the novelty wore off - which it did, quickly - the story just wasn't strong enough to stand on its own for me. The constant braid-tugging, the neverending "Men are stupid / I wish Mat/Perrin was here / I'm Rand al'Thor, and I have no clue what I'm doing"... the fact that Jordan uses colour to describe *every fricking detail*, from the pale green lace trim at the foot of some minor courtier's dress to the delicate pink silk collar at the top of it, twenty pages later...

Ahem. So, yeah. There are other minor details that bother me - for example, the fact that his world (which doesn't even have a *name*) fits into a perfect box, conveniently bordered by mountains on two sides and ocean on the other two. And, of course, I have a slight objection to the fact that I can skip 200 pages at once without missing a thing.

In conclusion, if Robert Jordan condensed the massive steaming pile of offal that is WoT into a small, tidy little mound of debris, it could be a great trilogy. But it isn't.

Then with all due respect you are living in a dream world imoPosted Image.

No one has said it was solely responible for the growth of fantasy in the 90's but imo it played a big part in it. The sales figures alone support that.

CoT is a lot worse than PoD, I have to say.
And after reading New Spring, I have to say I am all for the idea of more prequels. At least they woudn't be bogged down by 212891 subplots and 1284385 characters as the last WoT books.

I see you Wetlanders,

Your remarks regarding Robert JordaAan'allein have been heard. I do not speak for Far Dares Mai or A'ethan D'or, but you can expect that your need for the dance will be fulfilled by the Stone Dogs.

Siswaii'aman consider your overwrought outbursts to have no basis in logic or reason. Obviously, some kind of peculiar wetlander humour.

Long Pause.

Ha Ha

Siswaii'aman do not care.

They are too busy being " cool" and depressed and ' noble ' because Jie'toh does not wipe their arse for them.

Siswaii'aman do not care. Siswaii'aman salutes you.

We are Stone Dogs.

We are not ...... ' cool.'

We are .......... stimulated . We act.

Let us dance.

Briefly ;
I am puzzled. What is this " Duty is heavier than a mountain, Death is lighter than a feather." ? Duty. Hmnn,...

I once heard Matrim Cauthon say that Bull***t was a horse to ride, like any other......Sometime, maybe.

I don't understand .

But then.....wetlanders are not Aiel.

We are Stone Dogs.

Shame is the Anvil. Shame is the Mountain. The Aiel are the Iron .... And Honour is a Hammer.

Bull***t may be a horse to ride like any other ; but it is not swift enough to avoid the dance. < grin >

P.S : We have no sense of humour.

I started reading them around the time that Fires of Heaven was released IIRC. Each year or so when a book was released I'd reread the entire series first and then the new book. Now it's gotten to the stage that I've invested so much time in the stupid things I have to finish it or die trying.

The series really peaked for me at Lord of Chaos with Rand-in-the-box. It's been all downhill since then, although there have been enough cool things in the later books that I'm not feeling too bad in thinking they're readable. I might even go so far as to say I like certain bits. But as a whole the series lacks...hmmm inertia and the constant repitition of certain things is nauseating at times (stamp, stamp, tugs hair). It promises to get abit more interesting now a certain ancient restriction/problem has been fixed. Not that that will solve the problems with his writing style - cardboard cutout characterisations and repetitive and annoying behaviour from the main characters.

Just my two bob.

Rallick Recommends: "Children of the Grave" by Black Sabbath or White Zombie(The original is a classic, and White Zombie just m/ it)

Rallick, The likely hood of Erikson having got a ten book contract without WoT existing is very remote. WoT forged the way for the multi volume series we have today. Before that it was all trilogies for the most part. Also Fantasy has become more popular than it was in the eighties. To say WoT has not influrenced the genre is imo unbelievable. He has sold over 11 million books in North America alone and is published in 21 languages.

Why wasn't it a Like/hate option? Posted Image

After reading CoT I hated it but now after a reread of the first books I've changed my mind. Most of his books is quite good, and I hope that he can save the serie somehow.
