I'm going through a bit of a sad state the past couple days, so in the spirit of my teary thoughts, what is everyone's saddest moment in this series?
For me, it had to be when Apsalar broke down in Cotillion's arms after learning (so she thinks) that Crokus was dead. The moment where Erikson describes the rocks piling up just about killed me.

Before anyone else says them (and they will), Itkovian, Whiskeyjack and Coltaine's deaths are some of the saddest moments in the series.

I have to say that when Silchas Ruin finds out from Olar Ethil that Anomander is dead it really got me.

Mainly because immediately prior to finding out Silchas was remembering a time when he and Rake fought back-to-back and the were 'happy'.

The very simple sentence of Silchas bowed in grief, with Ruud Elalle watching over him really struck a chord with me.

Coltaine's death hit me the hardest. I just couldn't believe Erikson would cut him down so close to Aren.

From DoD, Toc being forced by Olar Ethil to turn Tool away really got to me. I hope that bitch gets her comeuppance. Torrent slapping her about was nice, but not enough.

In terms of sheer 'sad-factor', Coltaine, Whiskeyjack, Brys and Beak, among others, don't hit it for me because it was mid-action, so to speak. Tho the observers' reactions to Coltaine's death (Duiker, Nil and nether, Squint) were viscerally painful.

I found Toc dying just as Tool showed up to be heartwrenching. Trull getting backstabbed was worse. On a more subtle note, Apsalar and Squint's conversation on the ship, and their afterthoughts, was a wonderfuly subtle bit of sad - one of those moment where SE blows me away even without things 'sploding or massive plot revelations..

ah there's so many most involving crokus and apsalar, I cant remember what the exact lines were but when croks decides to go look for apsalar when he cottoned on to what he'd lost and why. Or in reapers Gale when someone says about Apsalar in front tavore 'a god comes to break her heart every night.'

I'm doing a reread and atm and the bit where Felisin Shaik is finding out what has happened in the pannion war and breaks down when she finds out her bro is still alive is a big moment. theres usually at least one in each book.

Oh yeah and the 6 or so times where Toc died were all pretty sad too

Beak was the saddest for me. Second would probably be Bottle and him leaving his body to help everyone in DoD. Although that could just be because I finished it tonight. I forget emotions quick unless they really stick. Beak stuck.

The scene in TTH where Karsa and Torvald Nom reunite. Oh, you say that didn't happen? EX FUCKING ACTLY
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Anomanders death hit me prety hard. He obviously planned it, so it should be considered a sacrafice. A 1/2 million year old ascendant dies by being obliterated. Maybe there was a way around that but perhaps he was sick of existence. Doesn't sound like Rake's life was full of pleasant moments frolicking in green pastures.

The other moment that got me was at the end of MOI when the BB met up with Duiker in Daru, and goes on to tell them the story of the Chain of Dogs.

duikers always been around the most affecting moments in the series for me. the unnamed soldier female he encountered in the chain of dogs was particularly touching. as was the scene in MOI mentioned above, it importeded the weight and gravitas of the chain of dogs into MOI through duikers cathartic and utterly simplistic and human recounting of the tale. and in the entertwining each was the better for it. i was rocked by rakes death and dassem has always been a very poignant figure in the series for me. whiskey jacks broken leg and the bridge burners interred in moonspawn. trull sengar and the ceda and that fateful spear throw. too many.

oh fuck it. coltaine outside aren made my cry and bringing him back as some superpowered imp was utterly trite and demeaning.
sitting down here in the campfire light, waiting on the ghost of tom joad.

baudin's death was very very sad for me. all that talon training stripped away at the very end to reveal a person who had been allowed to fully develop. and then you add on top of that the fact that all the thing felisin did from then on, becoming sha'ik fighting tavore was because she didnt want baudin to feel like he failed, she wanted to honour his wishes. well it was all quite sad for me, a sad part of the series that lacked to usual "yeah but did you see how much ass they kicked before/during/after they died".
I saw the sun's bolt
arc an unerring path
to the man's forehead.
As it struck, the crows

"Very well, permit me, if you will, on this night. To break your hearts once more. This is the story of the Chain of Dogs. Of Coltaine of the Crow Clan.."
- Duiker

Brings tears to my eyes everytime I read it..
