Hi there to all my fellow malazans,

I'm quite new to the malazan world. Last year I got into fantasy in a big way and decided to research on some good fantasy novels that people have recommended. One of the names that consistantly came up along with the likes of GRRM and Robert Jordan, was Steven Erikson. His malazan series seemed to be quite highly regarded amongst fans of the genre. I ordered a copy of GOTM asap and began reading straight away. Soon however, I began getting disinterested with the story and found the structure of the novel to be extremely confusing. Some how, I got to the end and wasn't sure if I would carry on reading the rest of the series. Thats when I came across this website. Many fans were insistant that the story gets better after book 1. I decided to give book 2 a chance and haven't looked back since. I can honestly say that Steven Erikson is the best fantasy author ive ever had the pleasure of reading. Ive just finished MOI and im on my way to HOC. Recently, I was lucky enough to meet him a signing event in Forbidden Planet in London. He was very humble while he signed my copy of the crippled god and so I decided to buy all the remaining books on the same day as well. My advice to anyone who is on the fence about the malazan books, PLEASE READ THIS SERIES BEYOND BOOK 1!!! It gets so much better later on.

Found these books by chance, as a few of you have. When explaining these books to people i tend to say lord of the rings.... On crack. Its sort of an easy way to describe them and ive gotten a few friends reading them now. Im usually only a sci fi reader but these books have me pulled right in..

Newbie on the block on any forum and apart from reviews and discussions on amazon never felt the lack. But seeing this incredible site I was compelled to add my insignificant thoughts and less than insightful insights. I discovered the Malazan Books just before the publication of Deadhouse Gates. A friend of mine worked for the publishers in Bath and gave me a copy, thus forcing me to go and buy Gardens of the Moon at the local Waterstones...and I have never looked back. I have been reading fantasy since.....well let's just say a long time, and back in the day there wern't many authors doing this stuff.
I have never read anything like the Malazan books and am constantly amazed at the complexity and genius of the author. Before the publication of a new book I would read the entire series again to refresh the memory a bit. I think Ian Esselmont is a little easier to read - have preordered his new book already Throne and Orb. Looking forward to chatting with like minded folks on the books.

Hi all, another new member here. Just finished GOTM and thought it was brilliant, although I have to admit at first I felt a tad lost, though I soon got my head around the concept and really got into the book. I've been reading fantasy since the Dragonlance series when I was a teenager, other authors I enjoy are GRRM, Feist, Hobb and John Connolly (not fantasy I know but a great author). Looking forward to chatting about the books with you guys.

Hi Everyone!

This is the third time Ive tried to introduce myself; I have this stupid vids mouse (G7) with a 'back' button on the side that I seem to hit everytime Im halfway through a forum post which causes me to rage and give-up on whatever I was writing at the moment. Last attempt was when I finished Dust, so Ive put this off for too long >.<

Ive actually been lurking the site for a few months, obsessively reading the forums at the conclusion of each book (I love this series 8D) so its about time I came out of the woodwork!

Ive always loved fantasy, Ive played DnD since I was 13, read the DragonLance/Forgotten Realms since about that time, and Ive always loved LoTr and WoT and The Dark Tower, Jack Whytes Arthurian cycle and what-not, so Im a big fantasy guy, but my mind had yet to be blown.....

My Malazan story is kind of long winded, but here goes..........

In 2004 My best friend and I packed our bags and went to Asia for 14 months (travelling around/back-packing/touristy stuff/getting to know ourselves/discovering life blah blah blah). In southern Laos on an island in the Mekong called Don Det, my friend found a book in the guesthouse lobby/mess sans cover pages or anythything, in fact I think it started in the middle of the prologue and was missing the last chapter. Regardless, he read it (because books are hard to come by over there, and you can only carry so much). He loved the book and wished he knew what happened in the end and what the book was called. I never read it because I was on this crazy sci-fi thing and was gobbling up all the William Gibson I could get my hands on 8P

Finally after returning home in late 2005, he managed to identify the book via his girlfriends brother. Guess what book it was? It was House of Chains! So finally he could go and finish HoC, and start the series from the beginning having learned that HoC was in fact the 4th book in the series (_8(|)

My friend realized Malazan was amazing and kept trying to get me to read it, Ive had Gardens of the Moon on my bookshelf for probably 4 years. After returning home from Asia I got super busy with school and working 2 jobs for a downpayment and this and that and life goes on and flies by. In Oct 2010 my fiance and I got the keys to our brand new house, and moved in before we had cable or the internet and all the necessities. 1 week without SC2 and hockey, I was going nuts, wtf would I do when my fiance works night shifts and Im alone all the time? Hey! Why not read Gardens of the Moon finally dumbass!

I finished the Crippled God last Saturday, Ive never cried so much in my life (not all of it from sadness btw, some were tears of joy >> "Dud!", "Smiles smiled", and sheer awe @ seeing it all tied up and resolved) and I just wanted to say I love the Book of the Fallen, Im still amazed @ how amazing it is, and Im ManWithEyes, Im from Canada, nice to meet everyone 8D

Hello, I'm a complete and total amateur and know next-to-nothing about Malazan Book of the Fallen, but that's why I joined this forum. This way, when I read Gardens of the Moon, I can go on here afterwards and read up on things I might not understand.

My initial intrigue to this book and the series itself were simply 3 things:

1.) I'm a regular reader of the reviews on fantasybookreview, and on their list of Top 100 Fantasy Novels (or Series comprised of fantasy novels) Malazan Book of the Fallen is listed at #2, succeeded only by The Lord of the Rings.

2.) While I haven't read many Fantasy novels other than the entirety of The Chronicles of Narnia (I've only read A Games of Thrones for A Song of Ice and Fire, The Eye of the World for The Wheel of Time, The Hobbit and not The Lord of the Rings, you get the idea)I still love the ones I've read, and the genre as a whole, and I've noticed that the darker and more machore the story, the better. So hearing that MBOTF was a "dark" fantasy series caught my interests, as well as hearing that it was a "intricately plotted" and "deep" story.

3.) This is quite literally one of the best Book Covers I've ever seen, a real attention-grabber that made me want to find out what the book was about:

The other covers I've seen are, to put politely, extremely unsatisfying. Fortunately I was able to find a Mass-Market Packerback Copy in Like-New Condition that retains the original book cover.

The book is obviously very long and from what I've heard demands strict attention.

I'm reading a few short unrelated books right now, but originally what I wanted to do was get a copy of A Clash of Kings to read for Spring Break, but the HBO adaptation of A Game of Thrones is premiering next Sunday and I fear reading the sequel while the original book adaptation is on TV might get confusing.

After that what I planned to do was read The Great Hunt, but honestly I'm curious now to read GOTM, it's a bad habit of mine to read the first books in an on-going series and instead of reading the sequels, move on to other stand-alone books or series-starters.

I do know this, the minute I finish reading GOTM, whenever that may be, I will hop onto this forum.

Hit me up if you want to tell me anything about the series in general, what to expect, what you think of it (etcetera) hope to get some responses.

Hello, everyone. I have been reading fantasy for what feels like decades (wait... it is now officially decades, more than two, in fact). I started reading them years ago, the first one I remember clearly was The Hobbit when I was 11 or 12.

Anyway, have gone through numerous authors over the years, but had stepped away from the genre for a while, and wanted a heavy series to get in to. I had seen the Erikson books, but they never drew me in, until I went on to a site recommending fantasy series. I picked up an e-book copy of Gardens of the Moon, and read the forward where Erikson warns the reader against how heavy-going the book is... halfway through I was seriously considering hiring a hit squad to take him out. Anyway, I got through it and loved it, but it is very heavy reading. I got through the first nine books in a couple of months, and then have waited a year for TCG, which I just started. I found this site looking for a summary of DoD. Erikson, I know you've got good summaries out there, as part of writing the novels, why not make them available? Anyway, thanks to some of the members here who caught me up, even though I'm still trying to remember who some of the characters are and how they fit in (the minor ones, not the major ones). I'll need to link a descriptive cast of characters summary on my iPad once I find a good one that gives back-story without any TCG spoilers.

I am also going to have to re-read the entire series once I'm done to pick up on all the stuff I missed the first time through.

I'm a huge fan now, but still want to kill the author at times. Does that make sense? I think you know what I mean. Happy Reading!

Read GotM a few years ago and then waited a while to start Deadhouse Gates... more than a year. Just when i started reading it they started the reread over at Tor. I can't possibly read at their pace so i just finished Midnight Tides, taking a break to read another series and will be opening The Bonehunters in another few weeks.

Been lurking in here for about a month and decided it was high time to actually register and start talking.

I started to read the saga many years ago, but as time goes on, I can't get enough of it:) I envy all foreigners who can purchase new books after its release. I'm from Czech republic and I was getting sick waiting for translations, so I bought 8 and 9 book in english and...wow! Can't wait till last one gets here.
And somethig about me: Fan of fantasy and sci-fi. Often playing RPG games with friends (when I was young I thought that group consisting of men between 22 - 27 would be lame and geek - fortunately it isn't:) Also interested in history, I'm a former member of a group of historical fencers.
I look forward to new informations and opinions.

Since I was given Gardens of the Moon for my birthday several years ago I've been in love with the Malazan world. Favourite characters include Tehol Beddict, Karsa Orlong and Cotillion. Oh and Quick Ben, he is totally kickass awesome!

Since finishing the Crippled God I've felt the need to share my thoughts, delve deeper and general enjoy the universe with others - my excitement when I found this was immense!

So yes. I'll do some reading and then, hopefully, post some comments, thoughts and theories!

I've been reading (and loving) the series for a few years now and while looking for maps etc. in preparation for reading The Crippled God, I've stumbled upon this community. Have to wait for the book because getting hold of new fantasy releases while living in Japan is quite the ordeal.

Anyhoo, whenever I'm feeling particularly called by Erikson and Esslemont's world I shall wander in here and check stuff out.

I know pretty much nothing about forums and have never posted on one before but I felt the need to join this one because Steven Erikson's books are the best things i've ever read! I picked up MOI a few years ago at random, not knowing it was part of a series. It confused the hell out of me but I loved it anyway and then realised that there were 2 books before it and went back and read those. Anyway having just finished The Crippled God, I felt the need to share my appreciation of this series and the genius of SE and ICE. I dragged out finishing TCG for so long coz I didn't want there to be no more SE books! So glad to read on here that he's going to be doing a couple more trilogies (is that right?)

Its cool to see so many other people who clearly agree with how awesome the Malazan books are anyway.

I'm about to start on Stonewielder now!

So yeah, I don't think I ever got around to introducing myself. Registered here a few years back when I first started reading the series, forgot about the forums for a while in between waiting for the next books, but back again.

Malazan fan from Finland, finished TCG two days ago now, headed for a full re-read once I get my GotM back from my little brother whom I've also managed to recruit into the ever growing Malazan army among my book-reading friends and relatives...

I'm here because there's simply too much intrigue and plot variations for none but a genious to comprehend and we mortals do need help ........... the genious of SE is Godlike (is he Kruppe for real?) and only by the collective can we hope to discover and traverse the pathways to warrens of enlightenment.

Hey all! In the midst of some research, I found this site earlier in the week, and boy am I glad I did! I've been a fan of SE's since I found GotM six years ago, and have enjoyed the series since I'm currently rereading the series so I can finally sit down and read DoD and TCG. Then I can go get copies of ICE's books and read those too

I don't want to say too much right now, but I may have a big announcement sometime over the next several days - stay tuned!
