Actually in terms of outright knowledge of the fantasy genre I am almost certainly lacking compared to most people here, there is alot that I haven't read even though I enjoy the genre. I have always enjoyed the whole process of dissecting and critiquing literary works though, literature being my favourite subject when I was still in learning, so I tend to look rather deeply at that which I read. Not to the point where I can't enjoy a book for the story it is, but usually after I am finished reading a book I will pour over it in my head, which is why I like these kinds of forums gives me a place to discuss and debate which isn't within the confines of my own head Posted Image

Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust." T.S Eliot - The Wasteland

Anyways, I shall do my best to actually contribute to these forums, though from past experience it always feels a little overwhelming attempting to join a forum so late in the game, as it were. On more than one occasion I have joined forums only to find almost a sort of caste system in place whereby the members with the earliest join dates and largest numbers of posts have what almost seems like a secret cabal that new members cannot help but feel alienated from - inevitably they complain about the lack of new members killing the forum as well. I suppose it is basic social interaction really, warped by the setting of the internet. Man that sounded pessimistic and depressing, I apologise

If there were a lack of new members, who would the oldies shout at about being on their lawn?!

Not to worry, we've already had a handful of forum apocalypses, dramatic emotional quittings, changes of leadership, servers hacked by chinese hackerbots, invasions of pedantic cavalry bears, plus there's always Worrywort.

Better yet, try and top all of those! B)

Welcome all!

Hi there.
I'm Lily, I just joined about a week ago, and I just lurked for a while.

... Seems like an interesting place.

Anyway, I'm in the middle of Memories of Ice and I'm avoiding spoilers like the plague. (Good luck, right? Seems impossible...)

Definitely confusing books (and I hope I can use this to help clarify) but I definitely love them. So far, I read through one intending to go back and read it again to understand better, but I find I just want to go buy the next one immediately. So I do.

Right, well, I'll try to post often. Well, more likely I'll attempt to make friends briefly then lurk with a post count of ten, but I'll try. I noticed a post just above about forums having a sort of caste system, and I agree. I haven't sucessfully clawed my way into a new forums in a while. Ah, well, soon I'll be off in search of the random and mildly frightening corner of these forums.

Anyway. I'm rambling.

My mind's a very strange place. Just a warning. I'm sure I'm not the only one?

I don't think this forum can afford a caste system even if people wanted it. Too eclectic a topic, the place would be dead. Persisting past the first book seems to be its own internal filter. Anyone coming out of GotM and actually wanting more of the confusion and the sheer mindboggling array of characters and storylines is, per definition, mentally deranged enough to fit right in here. Well, that's my n00b take on it anyway. Could be I simply haven't stumbled upon the elite pickets yet and they are waiting for a careless step to litter me with arrows of disdain.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

I've always wanted to join a forum that had a cask system...

Greetings forum members. You ever tried to explain this book series, even a single volume of it to a friend who hasn't read it? After about 20 minutes you realize said friend is now looking at you with a glaze over their eyes, as if contemplating shoving a butter knife through nostril. It was this experience, and the growing need to talk about this series with people who would not want to strangle me for the effort which caused me to finally join this site. Forums are usually not my thing, but I've never read a book series which sparks an enthusiasm for sharing these experiences with fellow Malazan fans..that said, I've also never read a book series which makes my friends want to spear me in the eye when trying to explain my growing addiction to it with them.

About me; swf, recent college grad., currently working in the service of said college in a place where many books can be found. I'm not sure what I want to do with my life, I've considered assassin, but the good ones all seem to be used by a god so I may abandon that thought. I live in the beautiful Pacific NW, where it is currently becoming green again from all the damn rain. (can I say damn here without being banned? Guess I will shortly find out.

I've recently finished "The Bone Hunters," and I've previously read "Night of Knives." So I'm only about 7 books through what amounts to about a what? 20 book series if you take into account the works of both authors. Anyway, I love this series and hope to make a few friends here along the way.

I didn't actually realize it at the time I chose the book (GoTM), but it turned out I had to do a project on it for my English class. And a presentation. The entire class was giving me that spear-through-eye expression.

Welcome Rob, I have finished the series but like you just joined, from your posts in the Gotm forum I see your literary knowledge may be a but past mine. I look forward to discussing the books with you as you go through them.

Move out into the rest of the forum and you'll get more conversation
HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. Tell us about the assignment, then bring that teacher/professor back with you. I'd say the idea would please many here.

Good day.

I am Maark. Originally of Weymouth, relocated to Barnsley. Aspiring writer, currently working as a legal administrator in spite of the gargantuan holes in my ears.

I am here to make this forum metal.

I am here to make EVERYTHING metal.

Blacker than the blackest black times infinity.

Beyond making things metal, I also enjoy video games, reading (obviously), and weightlifting.

Aye, that I do.

We will bury them beneath a field of our flags, the white cross bordered in red on a yellow background.

We may not have cities, but we have superior real ales and an utter lack of motorways. We are MASTERS of the traa'rrr. We have a GIANT with a massive erection who will fight for us!

Mark my words, the deepest South will rise and conquer those Zummerzet sorts.
