No scorn. Grub and Sinn as ascendents as a result of their experiences would go a long way towards explaining a few things.

Neorep given for that, in case you thought no one noticed or got it.

Hmm going with that theory, I think Bredd would be a "Malazan Heavy" Avatar of some sorts. Impossibly tough.

Possible then that he was 'created' when the heavies held in the line in the harbour at the very end of BH, but as I have no idea when he's first mentioned (assistance please!) I won't commit to that theory!

He's mentioned as early as HOC I think.

Confirmed. In TB it's hinted that Smiles is behind the rumours, but in DoD she seems as surprised as anyone by the heavies' adulation.

I don't know where I got this idea, it's pretty much baseless speculation (maybe not even that), but I get the feeling that Captain Kindly is behind the whole Bredd urban legend. Maybe as a practical joke (cause we know Kindly does have a warped sense of humour) or maybe as some sort of morale thing.

But it's also a common in-joke amongst soldiers isn't it? The whole 'amazingly deadly, kick-ass super soldier that nobody has ever actually seen' trope was an established in-joke amongst some real-life military units, I was led to believe.
I have no excuses, least of all for God. Like all tyrants, he is not worthy of the spit you would waste on negotiations. The deal we have is infinitely simpler – I don't call him to account, and he extends me the same courtesy.

Yeah, I always though Bredd wasn't a real soldier. More of a 'bogeyman' for the other side. Of course if there is enough belief that he does exists, then who knows...

Yeah, actually thought that Nefarious Bredd was an in-joke of the sergeants - Fid, Gesler and Stormy. Something to give the troops to believe in - tall tales, etc. One legend among thousands, etc.

As for Ruthan Gudd, has definitely spent time with Greymane - could be another servant of Burn's? Personally think that this is the connection to Draconus and that Child of Earth from TTH (or was it RotCG?).

Or Greymane is Grizzen Farl! and Rudd is his sidekick!

Ruthan Gudd is the EG of virility. In the little time we have known him, he has done both dead and live women. I see no other explanation since he has lived a really long time and are still bedding women left and right.

Please, Grizzin Farl is Greymane's sidekick. Whether he's Rudd or not.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I still think that Gudd is Grizzan Farl. not enuff evidence to conclusively prove he isn't, so i'm gonna say he is. ;-)

We dont know who Ruthan Gudd is or have any reference what so ever to him in previous books so hes so open to speculation. Who he is, what he is, wheres he been. SE likes to drop ever so subtle hints throughout his writing that, I especially, have only picked up on a reread through the series again.

I came across something interesting in MOI, i dont have the book to hand for a direct quote but it stuck in my mind... when the Bridgeburners had jumped using the Quorls into Coral and the trenches and their resisting the Seer's forces. Quick Ben uses Mockra to influence the Seer's forces in that they believe are been attacked by a demon which leaves much carnage. The next scene is that an extremely life like apparation, almost too life like, appears astride a war horse, and with a flash of ice he launches his axe at a certain enemy which then turns into a wraith and attacks! This warrior then vanishes back into his warren.

With this flash of ice i like to imagine that this is Ruthan Gudd aiding the struggling Bridgeburners and Dujek though with nothing evident apart from the flash of ice to back up the theory. :)

apparently so aye, but one wonders... I got the bit here...

Another Seerdomin wizard appeared from the legion's ranks, mounted on a huge dun charger. Sorcery danced over his
armour, pale, dull, flickering on the double-bladed axe in his right hand.
"Oh," Blend whispered. "Thats a sharp illusion"
He rode to join one of his fellow mages.
Who turned.
The axe flew from the rider's hand, its wake sparking with suspended ice. Changed shape, blackening, twisting, reaching
out clawed, midnight limbs.
The victim screamed as the wraith struck him...

And then after the wraith departing with his prize...

The rider, after throwing the ghastly weapon, had driven his heels into his horse flanks. The huge beast had veered, hooves
pounding, to ride down a second Seerdomin in a flurry of stamping that, within moments, flung blood-soaked clumps of mud
into the air.
Socery tumbled towards the rider.
Who drove his horse forward. A ragged tear parted before them, into which the horse and the rider vanished...

The end part to that made me wonder. If it was only an illusion I dunno why it would retreat?

Its an illusion thing under a command, or a summons, as QB does know plenty about using demons.

The axe isn't made of ice, in this case either, its a thrown object which is a wraith, its death magic and I assumed something summoned from Hood's realm.

When Ruthan rides out, he has a sword, his horse becomes encased in ice and dies, he is encased in ice.
Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.

Hmmm, somebody with better knowledge than me would be able to list all the warrens that QB can access.

However, based on the wording "blackening..midnight limbed....wraith" and the fact that on other occasions when it has been unveiled in the books it has been described as cold or icy, one could argue that QB is using Kurald Galain and Mockra. Which is interesting considering his "new" role in High House Dark.

Has QB ever accessed Omtose Phellack, I can't remember.
Now all the friends that you knew in school they used to be so cool, now they just bore you.
Just look at em' now, already pullin' the plow. So quick to take to grain, like some old mule.

My impression was that the "she" was his enchanted sword.

And I got the sense that gudd longs for release has lived to long seen to much. When he says "I have reconsided. Find me and one of us will die." I think he wants draconus to end him. possibly to break a crimson guard type vow. " the truth of foolish vows uttered a lifetime ago".

So my vote is human accendent or next best thing over EG

On my first read through I thought he had named himself Jakuruku lol
