Warcraft Movie

There has been talk about a Warcraft movie for the last few years but there hasn't been much info going around, until now that they have signed on a director.
It's not Uwe Boll, he asked for it two years ago and got laughted out of Blizzards office, the new director is to be Sam Raimi, after he finishers up with Spider Man 4. Also Chris Metzen, creator of Warcraft, is very involved with the project and he wants Bruce Campbell to play a part.

With Blizzard involved and working with Legendary Pictures (300, The Dark Knight, and Watchmen) I'm kinda hopeful for this movie, bad news is it wont be out until at least 2011, maybe 2012.

I am worried about this.
I really hope they use the established stories from the video games as a basis. I think I would be most comfortable if they made it a series of film and started off with the undead infestation from Warcraft 3. That begining would be the coolest and most easily understood story for the masses. Begining earlier with invasion of the orcs would be kind of boring I suspect, not enough meat on those bones, and starting later would be far too confusing for the uninitiated.
I hope they don't just make up some random story set in the world with no real connection to the worlds events.

as a long time warcraft freak, I'll agree with Apt... this could potentially go ulgy, but if they stick to canon it should be cool.
then again, various books and comics "filled the gaps", could be the film does one of these things as well. it might be slightly "side topic" but integrated into the whole

Ugh. Warcraft is my least favourite of the three Blizzard worlds. It's not the most dreadful story ever... at least not for the first couple of campaigns in Warcraft 3 vanilla (war 1 and 2 was basically just humans fighting orcs), but in the later campaigns of War3 the story gets kind of stale and overkill. And the whole storyline in the Frozen Throne campaigns was just dreadful IMO.
I can see how this might be a good movie. Only I hope the opposite of some of the above posters - I hope they do make a separate story arc for the movie. Also I can't see myself really appreciating the story very much, but I can imagine enjoyment following the battle scenes since I may understand the logistics of it, depending on how similar they make it to the games.

I didn't bother with Transformers 2. I didn't bother with Terminator 4. I didn't bother with Iron Man or Spider Man 3 or either of the newer Hulks. I didn't bother with the Fantastic 4's. I didn't bother with Hancock. I'm not going to bother with Green Lantern or the other Green dude.

personally I think this all went down the pan when Uwe Boll was passed over for director. The mans a genious.
Whilst I was never the biggest warcraft fan, the worlds entertaining enough and potential for a great film exists.
I expect this film to flop, as mainstream audiences will associate it witg WOW and other geekery. depressing.
What I really want to see is a warhammer game, using the SoftHR story

I was going to make scathing comment about movies based on video games but i remembered ADVENT CHILDREN and some of the battle scenes from LOTR and 300 and decided that there was a bare possibility this might not suck.
But the chances of it baring any strong resemblance to the game storylines is minimal. They need a bigger audience than that.

my prediction, for what it's worth...
The first movie will be good- special effects will carry the day, and the plot will satisfy hardcore WoW gamers...
the sequal however.....(see Cold Irons post above)

meh, they'll probably do a "lord of the clans" combined with the orc campaign from WC3--make it all about Thrall
or, alternatively, make a movie based on Day of the Dragon.
either way, I'm not having high hopes for this.

Imagine a movie about Starcraft 1. Just how kickass would that be, if they could get the right feel of protoss and zerg. It could easily just be a lone marine squad sent out to battle the empire's enemies, trying to survive in hostile worlds with zergs, protoss and enemy marines

actually, I think that the story for the bonus campaign pack "Insurrection" would translate well into a movie, but it's obscure enough to not piss off the legions of fans of the original story.
