I dunno, he's probably all right, I just got sick of his curmudgeonly whining about the movies.

I think the preservation of legacy stuff is a bit asinine. However, I'm fairly sure the Tolkien estate is being screwed out of movie/product money due to Hollywood accounting. That's bad and very much worthy of griping.

Ah, there we go. I didn't see the first or remember that they got the swords during the troll battle.

The problem with Brian Herbert is that he chose an incredibly shitty co-author (Kevin Anderson) to expand his father's incomplete outlines and notes into prequels that are naked cash grabs.

The concept of each book is alright, but the execution is abysmal in comparison to the Frank Herbert books and in comparison to average SF books as well.

I've wondered this. Gandalf tells Bilbo Sting will glow when goblins are near yet neither Glamdring or the other one does despite also being of Elvish make... Or did I miss something? Been many years since I read any Tolkien.

The three swords was made of the elves of Gondlin or however you write it. So Thorin's sword is also suppose to shine.

Not every sword has to have the same enchantments. I think its purposeful.

Bah, I bet they did it so that people don't have to wonder about 3 shining swords. And since I can't find any pictures of glamdring shining in Lotr, PJ just ignores that part.

Based on the books, Glamdring (Gandalf's sword), Orcrist (Thorin's) and Sting (Bilbo's) were made in Gondolin in the First age and glow blue or white (the larger ones white) when orcs or other dark creatures are near.
It looks like PJ ignored the other glowing swords cause he didn't want to make Sting look run-of-the-mill.

Okay I did some research, Glamring at the very least should glow. So yeah PJ make a creative decision

Yeah, that's a creative one, as Glamdring doesn't always glow in LOTR either, if ever.

Every time its close enough to orcs and unsheathed it does in LOTRO. All elvish-made swords at the time 'glowed when evil was near'. It wasn't a specific enchantment to sting or anything.

Also, Glamdring did glow when they were fighting the great goblin.

Yes, but the point is that PJ and Co. chose when they wanted them to glow....as some instances both swords in both movies don't glow in parts that they should.

A wizard did it, you nitpicking nerds!
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Maybe it was the presence of the Necromancer...he was deliberately concealing the orcs, after all.

That he did, but when Gandalf banished the sorcery and reviled the orcs the sword should have shined. Oh I'm just a grumpy young fart.

I don't recall the sequence of events, so you're probably right. But on the other hand maybe it was glowing, but since as outsiders we only see the Necromancer's dark vs. Gandalf's mage-light, the glow was not visible. I mean who's to say how magical light works, maybe it doesn't act like both a wave and a particle, maybe it acts like a sporadic hemihelix and our eyes just can't interpret that form.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go push my glasses back up the bridge of my nose for a few hours while making Jerry Lewis/Professor Frink noises.
