Movies you need to see. In the same vein as Apt's music thread.

The Godfather (with sequels) - I can't believe nobody mentioned it yet.
The Matrix
I agree about Serenity, but you have to watch the tv show first, to get into it.

Benchmark of comedy? Billy Madison

Good fight movie: Fight Club

Good horror/suspence movie? The Thing (1982)

Good action? Enter the Dragon

Good military movie: Full Metal Jacket

Good foreign film...: Children of Heaven (subtitles)

Good ganster movie: Shottas

Special mention goes out to Bullitt, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Tom Yum Goong, and Highlander

That's off the top of my head anyway... oh and I gotta throw Top Gun out there just 'cus.... :(

Ok, some of these have been mentioned already, but in no particular order this is my top 10:
The Departed
Goodfellas
A Few Good Men
Good Will Hunting
Rounders
Lonesome Dove (nobody has mentioned this yet, but trust me, it is by far the best Western ever made, and yes I'm including the Good the Bad and the Ugly, Rio Bravo, the Magnificent 7, and Unforgiven, Robert Duvall is just awesome, and it is based on a book that is great by Larry McMurty, plus there are a few prequels written that are awesome)
Saving Private Ryan (best war movie ever)
Gladiator (surprised this wasn't mentioned either)
Usual Suspects

some others that should be included in your list:
the Natural
Blood Diamond (new and big budget, but I thought very powerful)
the Hustler (and its sequel the Color of Money is alrite but not required watching)
Patton (definitely a classic with a great opening scene)
Rocky (tho if you haven't seen it or the sequels yet I'm not sure I wanna be your friend anymore)
Hoosiers (classic sports movie about an underdog)
The Cincinnati Kid (steve mcqueen, karl malden, and an unrecognizable Rip Torn if you've seen his later work like Dodgeball or MiB)

idk thats all I can think of off the top of my head...if this thread persists I'll be back (sorry about the repeats, if I copied you just take it as reassurance that you named a good movie)
So, you're the historian who survived the Chain of Dogs.
Actually, I didn't.

It seems you stand alone.
It was ever thus.

Yes. Hands down my favorite movie. If you've got 6 hours its well worth it.

Dark City - highly underrated sf flic that never got the luv it deserved. Arguably did the Matrix before The Matrix.

- Abyss, part time film nut.
[/quote]

very good movie
(Jen'isand Rul, the Wanderer within the Sword)
'I am the Shield Anvil.' I am Fener's grief. I am the world's grief. And I will hold. I will hold it all, for we are not yet done. <Itkovian>
'We are not born innocent, simply unmeasured.' <Hull Beddict>
'Because a god visits her, Fist. He comes to break her heart. Again and again.'<Nether>
'Fucking dragon.' <Fiddler>
Take my breath. But not this one, not this one. <Apsalar>
'Aye.' It's a good word. I think. More a whole attitude than a word, really. With lots of meaning in it, too. A bit of 'yes' and a bit of 'well fuck' and maybe some 'we're all in this together.' So a word to some up the Malazans. <Sunrise>

Hoosiers & Full Metal Jacket.

Hey Hoosier, in the movie Grosse Point Blank, the scene at the beginning where he shoots the bike assassin is an homage to your "$2.00" quote.

Where the Buffalo Roam is an amazing movie if you are a fan of Hunter S Thompson. It was done in the 80's with Billy Murry playing Hunter.
Jesus' Son is another good movie with Billy Cudrup in it as a strung out looser who just kinda floats along ( no that's not the whole story ).
The Salton Sea with Val Kilmer, Val plays a guy who's wife was killed and dives into the under ground world of meth to find out who killed her since the cops won't do anything.
SLC Punks follows a group of punks in the mid 80s in Salk Lake City. It is one of Matthew Lillard early movies. Very Very Very good comentary
In To The Wild Wow, I was blown away with this story and how they captured it on film.

i'll have to add more later but that is my list to start with.

Probably not a benchmark, and I would've said Happy Gilmore over Madison but it's still awesome, so I'll take it. Best comedy of my generation would have to go to Anchorman I think.

To the Netflix queue, Robin!

Chiming in here with something I rarely seen mentioned.

One Hour Photo starring Robin Williams. Its easily his best film.

Whoah... while One Hour Photo was good, nothing beats Good Morning Vietnam!

I also quite like Insomnia and ... uhm, can't remember the name... the one where he plays a radical new teacher on a old private school.
