Hello everybody.
So to recap the important things that have been said so far:
S&M with chains
"Servicing" gods
Hairy Testicles that grow
Did I miss anything else important?

My emotional rollercoaster over the last few moments;
Game started early - yay
What if I have been modkilled already? - boo
Only two pages of posts - yay
I know nothing about Deepgate - boo
Lots of others don't either - yay
I am probably annoying the hell out of everyone with my first post - boo
I'm one of the ones that thinks Korlat's run down was useful. Okay, it might not give any practical help, but it feels useful.

Looks like it's just you and me Ruse. *
I asked Lish if he realized that this game was a shameless plug for getting everyone to read this series and the answer was basically "yes".
*edited to add: and Telas who is visible

I'm here too. So what do you guys want to talk about? I know nothing about the series and the OP has very little in it. Does anyone think mr airship man is important?

@D'riss - having zero knowledge of the books makes raising a discussion topic difficult. As to the airship man, he probably is, but I'm not sure where any conclusion on him would lead us.
Oh I can see that I am all alone - and now it is bed time. See you tomorrow.

Ok, goodnight then. Yeah, I'm sitting here and willing to talk about stuff, but I really know nothing other than what has been stated in this thread (googling proved fruitless) so I cant even speculate on my lonesome

bah, lisheo's getting paid by Alan Campbell to advertise the series.
it's the only explanation.
this day 1 promises to be more random than usual...

At least it's a merc game, it's slightly more forgivable to lynch randomly.

Fener, on Jun 5 2009, 12:42 AM, said:
I've read the books and thought myself mighty clever until our friendly mod told me he'd mucked around with the roles to remove any advantage given those who've more than dabbled in this series, so though Korlat is doing an excellent job of trying to hide in plain sight, it's ultimately rather pointless to dwell on the individual character descriptions I'd think.
I promised myself I would jump straight into this, but I'm exhausted and need desperatly to get a good nights sleep, so I'll have to save up my contributions for later.

Don't be pig-headed, Fener! Even if we can't guess factions, knowledge of the characters can help us divine what abilities they might have, and we probably will still be able to figure out factions with some accuracy by about the half-way point of the game.

Right, so, a character I missed before:
Mina is a peon of Balisis (whom PS mentioned for me), and she performs a few miracles here and there. She helps out/travels with Rachel at some point.
Now, basic plot summary. Not too important, but just so you get a vague sense of it:
Dill is lonely, bored and not allowed to do anything (even fly). Rachel (assassin chick, remember), is assigned to babysit Dill (and teach him to fight, since he's just had his angel bar mitzvah). Carnival is a badass evil angel who kills someone every dark night to prolong her life. Rachel actually goes out hunting Carnival every dark night (its like once a monthish). Devon the poisoner/alchemist is dying from all the poisons he handles so he's going around killing innocent people (much more frequently than Carnival) to try and make "angelwine" which'll make him live forever. And he likes killing people. Nettle, father of one of Devon's victims, thinks Carnival killed his daughter and goes around stirring shit up (total vig if this were a town game...). The priests, the head Spine honcho, have some political issues in the mounting craziness of people. And all the while their still warring on and off with the Heshites out in the deserts around the abyss.
So all that's goin' on and conflicting in various ways and then one of the characters goes and betrays the whole town (guess who, I'll give a hint -> its the guy who wants to kill everyone and live forever
).
So that leads to a wonderful quest for Dill and Rachel to head down into the Abyss to try to save the city from demons and Heshites. At first it's just the two of them, and they're quite buddy-buddy-then-some-more, but then Surprise! - Carnival joins them (she and Rachel both have daddy issues, it totally makes sense).
Nettle and the factions in the town all keep crazy shit happening in the town and things get very out of hand. Buildings explode, flip over and hang upside down, people die, etc etc.
Dill, Rachel and Carnival go all the way down into the abyss and, long-story short, find Ulcis himself, who is actually not such a wondrous God after all, rather quite evil.
In book 2, the gate of Hell is open because of what was in the spoiler tags, and the town is in a really crappy state of disrepair. The Spines establish a curfew and start running the city, but lots of people are sneaking away onto the plains outside the abyss. Demons are leaking through the gate at the bottom of the abyss. Trench, archon from heaven, possesses Dill's body so Dill gets sent to Hell. While Cospinol, pulled by John Anchor, comes to the city to seal the gate, Rachel and Trench-in-Dill try to go recover Dill's soul/self and get him back before the gate gets closed shut.
Book 3 isn't officially even out yet, but Menoa and his archonites come out and start kicking ass. The heroes join up with Mina, Basilis and later Hasp to try to stop the Hellspawn from killing the God of Time, while John Anchor goes headfirst into Hell to kick his own ass.
Hope that gives you a vague idea of stuff that goes down. Meanas, you owe me some pancakes!

So lots of roles/characters for killing killers that kill, but nothing from that summary suggests cult to me. Meh, like I said, knowing their names doesn't help us find them anyway.
And I'm off to bed, see you all tomorrow morning.

Ulcis takes control of people's souls when they die; so does Menoa. So we could see something somewhat like that, although I'm not sure exactly how that'd work.

Sorry guys, the early start really screwed up my schedule. I'll be on tomorrow and then I' might be able to read the wall of text and maybe contribute some, never read the books, but they sound cool. Anyway, see you all tomorrow.

I'm still gray on this whole theme and how it ties together, this thread helped more than the internet though. Lish I'll need a credit card # please so I can overnight the books from Amazon.

doesn't look like much is happening.
for my 2 cents, i'd think either a priest or a Spine character would be a "recruiter"

Thanks for the summary Korlat. You've thwarted Lish's plot to get us all to buy the books. Unless, as Tellan suggests, he'd be willing to offer up his credit card number....
The one part that doesn't make total sense is why Carnival joined those two on their quest. Daddyissues brought them together? Not having read the book that seems a little weak.
