Just got back from watching True Grit- absolutely fantastic movie and one of the best westerns I've seen in a long long time. I'm not a huge Coen brothers fan but this movie was even better than the praise I had heard about it. Great film, amazing acting, excellent complimenting soundtrack and a great story. Can't recommend it enough.

Watch the ones you haven't seen out of the following amazing western:

1) The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
2) No Country for Old Men
3) The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
4) The Proposition
5) The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
6) Unforgiven
7) Lonesome Dove

That's a good list. Add Once Upon A Time in the West. And McCabe and Mrs. Miller.

How could you forget Wild Wild West from the list of truly great Westerns? It was so fantastic!
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

For sure, it's not definitive. Once Upon a Time in the West belongs on there.

"It's Henry (beeping) Fonda!"

Haven't seen McCabe and Mrs. Miller. Shane was terrible. Maybe good for its time, but hasn't held up well at all.

I've seen 2, 5 and 6 and totally agree with 2 and 5- cannot with 6. Honestly hated Unforgiven- and I love Clint Eastwood. I'd add Outlaw Josey Wales as it's my favorite Eastwood western and one of my favorites of all time. The others I will definitely check out(have heard about the Jesse James movie and of course Lonesome Dove though I haven't seen those yet.). Thanks for the list as I always love to check out good westerns.
I also loved Silverado.

I also have a thing for the Quick and the Dead. It's basically one of those silly fight tournament films, only with duels in the old west. And it has Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone, Leonardo DiCaprio and Russel Crow in it among others.

The Magnificent Seven ought to be on a list like that, perhaps as 9th or in the teens. Yes, I know it is a remake of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, but since that movie was based on the western tradition, itself, it kinda is a circle come round. Eli Wallach is also absolutely hilarious as the bad guy.

Ringo Rides Again (el retorno de Ringo, 1965) is also a pretty cool movie - the bad thing about it is that it copies the whole 'get your ass kicked and recover in a cave with assistance of the locals' that a Fistful of Dollars also had... which was produced a year before (1964).

I'd put "Support Your Local Sherriff" on the best list also. James Garner at his best.

And just an fyi, i've seen Tombstone so many times i can say every line along with the cast, though i've been told its annoying.

Ah, tis a great movie. With the best 'taches ever. Not to mention the doc-Ringo exchanges.

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I just watched "Let The Right One In".

This movie creeped me right the fuck out. Holy shit. It's not a slasher movie. It's not a "we're going to make everything dark and then try to scare you with shit popping out of nowhere" movie. It's scary just by being what it is. There are twists to the story, but they're like bonuses - not absolutely essential to the main story itself.

The rest will be spoilered, to preserve the twists.

Spoiler

This movie is so creepy that I'm not sure I want to catch the American version - despite it getting rave reviews and blurbs like "the best horror movie of the last twenty years" from Stephen King. I don't know if I can take it again.

Amazing achievement by the filmmakers - making a movie I want to never see again, yet I will certainly not forget anything about it. Wow.

I love this film, defines creepy imo. That scene at the end is just pure awesome.

As to the American version - well, a good Swedish film gets made from a good Swedish book; gets remade in America, and then an American horror writer says it's the 'best horror movie ever.' With no reference to the original.

Well done America for making such an original movie.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

The author of the book they were based on expresses his great satisfaction with both versions. The best online reviews I can find (coherent, well phrased and aware of both versions) mostly say that both are really good, with slightly different takes on the story.

All I know is that unless my girl really pushes for it, I'm not watching that story again - even if it's a different movie. (shuddering)

I watched the Korean film Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter... And Spring today. Very good. While it's a loosely paced, contemplative film as you might expect, it's a lot harsher than I thought it was going to be. Definitely a thumbs up though. I like South Korean cinema a lot.

Yah, I love the three or so Kim Ki-Duk movies I've seen, including that one. 3-Iron might be my favorite; similarly contemplative and gently-paced, and so romantic! It appears several of his movies have been added to Netflix Instant, too.

I don't know... all of my friends were so excited about "Spring, Summer..." that when "Samaritan Girl" came to the cinemas here, I went to see it. It was quite a disappointment, haven't felt the inclination to check out any of his other films afterwards, in spite of the great reputation he has here in Europe.

But I do quite like South Korean cinema generally. "Peppermint Candy" made a big impression on me when I was younger, and comedies like "Everybody has secrets" or "The Quiet Family", with their intelligent - albeit slightly morbid - humour, are great entertainment.
The problem with people who have no vices is that generally you can be pretty sure they're going to have some pretty annoying virtues.

I haven't seen enough of it to be honest- I've only seen two Park Chan-Wook films so far, and only one from Kim Ki-Duk. I also intend to see Mother by the dude who did The Host quite soon.

On a different subject, just seen The King's Speech. It's basically Rocky with royalty, a story that really shouldn't work as a film majorly lifted by a very good (formulaic, but very witty and staying just the right side of cheesy) script and some great performances.

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Yeah I just watched the Battle: Los Angeles trailer for the first time at the movie I went to today- it looks like it could be pretty sweet. I just saw The Fighter and it is a great movie- Walhberg, Bale and the entire cast do an incredible acting job. One of the best films I've seen all year by far. If you haven't seen you should definitely check it out.
