I watched the first Die Hard movie today for the first time. I don't know why I've never seen it before. It was pretty good.

Whoah. Whoah. Pretty good?

Pretty good is a cold beer on a hot summer day. Die Hard 1 isn't pretty good. Die Hard is the American equivalent of the Pyramids of Giza and the Mona Liza. It's a fucking national treasure.

When America is gone. When the North American continent has been reclaimed by the Lizard People. Songs will still be sung about the Epic that was "Die Hard" and an American Hero who was called John McClane.

Okay A. Who the fuck is Mona Liza? and B. In post apocalyptic times they will speak of the long long ago, when Maclane defeated The Snape with a machine gun and glass in his foot. :)

I watched the Jim Carrey animated version of A Christmas Carol where he plays all the spirits too. Wasn't too bad, wasn't great either (its rep for being unnecessary is pretty right on). That said, visually it was absolutely ghoulish in a way that can't be wholly attributed to the uncanny valley. The character designs were consistently so grotesque.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Now I have a machine gun. Ho.ho.ho.

I watched the Half Blood Prince last night. And I still think, that although Yates generally does a good job of getting the books on screen, when it comes to the dramatic endings, he really misses badly.
Spoiler

Bit of a let down after so many movies.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Hang on, Traveller. Did you just give away the ending of Harry Potter? I was waiting for the film to come on tv and I haven't read the book!

I love that verison becuase of how they are able to not only NAIL Victorian London's look, but we get to see so much of it throughout as backdrop (something that is missing from most early versions or live action where the sets were so-so). It's probably my second fave version of the story (after Mickey's A Christmas Carol) and we watch it each year now.

Really if Harry Potter defeating Voldemort in the last book/movie is somehow a spoiler to you then I just don't know what to say.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

No but seriously, this thread is an open discussion about movies in general.

If you want to talk about the ending of a specific movie, put it in a spoiler box.

And no, there is no expiration date on spoilers. That's just the excuse of assholes.

King Kong gets shot by biplanes and falls to his death from the Empire State Building.

(realtalk he clearly didn't have enough detail to spoil the 'how' of what happened at the end, rather than the flat 'what', and seriously it's a children's book of course the evil guy gets defeated by the good guy)

And no, there is no expiration date on spoilers. That's just the excuse of assholes.

Huge cultural phenomenons like Harry Potter/Hunger Games/Star Wars etc have a one year spoiler expiration date.

The books/movies are just too big to keep in spoilers forever. The sentient beings walking around that didn't see/read them generally know that they're cultural phenomenons and giving them a year to get onboard is enough.

The last Harry Potter movie came out in 2011 and the last book came out in 2007. Even if pushing the expiration date to the movie's release (it should be tied to the books, which were already a phenomenon before the movies), it's long past.

The only exception are books/movies that rely so totally upon a twist that spoiling it absolutely trashes the experience of reading the book/watching the movie.

I hate being spoilered, but really, if you know enough about Potter to know who Voldermort is, then you know how it's going to end.

I wouldn't risk spoilering Thrones to those who haven't read it, but Potter is up there with Star Wars and LotRs imo.. the content, endings included, are featured so heavily across all forms of media that people who haven't read a single Potter book still know how they end.

I'm still hoping Mez is being funny.

Ha ha, didn't mean to create controversy :-) I really don't know how it ends though - I assume the goodies win but I've been wondering if Harry might die or something and the post suggests not at the same time as not saying anything much. I don't give a shit enough about it for a spoiler to actually bother me though. The tone of the post was jovial! Move on, there's nothing to see here.

A properly written Harry Potter would have had him in Slytherin, Hermione in Ravenclaw and the Marauder's Map burnt in a conflagration that took out Mrs Norris too.
