You know, that's an interesting point to raise (apologies for derailing slightly, I'll behave after this one post!) – I rewatched TLJ after mostly enjoying it in the cinema. I HATED it. I can only assume I got carried along on "OMG, new Star Wars" in the cinema, because aside from the odd bit I still enjoyed or laughed at, the whole thing felt messy and a cheat of whatever the original intent had been for at least half the story.

So, in some ways, I can get behind the idea of wishing they'd gone alternative timeline instead!

I liked into darkness.

I'd say it's the weakest of the three but still a solid film

Yes, not to derail the thread, but it really would have gone a long way to avoid what's happening with SW under Disney as we speak...as those who don't like the direction could just say "Eh, it's an alternate timeline, I'll ignore it"

I'm curious what you didn't like about them.

bearing in mind that as in Malazan THE TIMELINE IS NOT IMPORTANT

genuine question, curious if its star trekkery that pissed you off or you just thought they were awful films

I didn’t enjoy either of the 2 Trek I’ve seen and I don’t plan on watching 3rd. Not saying I will never do so just saying I don’t plan on actively seeking it out to see it. Maybe I ll tune in if it is ever playing on tv when I’m channel hopping.

I think you'd dig the 3rd.

Went to the movies, chose Deadpool 2 over IW and Solo. Was not disappointed.

Not a Trekkie in the slightest. I liked the first of the new films and thought into Darkness was a drop in quality. Have seen 1 episode of Discovery and that is the extent of my Trek knowledge/experience. I care not for timelines and whatnot so I'm willing to give Beyond a try.

Ah well as someone who knows nothing of the trekverse Incontinence understand how this can annoy people so much but I guess if you're really into the canon it must be frustrating

I'm a massive Trekkie. I find the alternate timeline annoying. They've got the entire FUTURE to choose from for storylines but they prefer to go over old ground? Ridiculous. Saying that I enjoy the films as standalone and a loved Discovery. I am conflicted.

I just wanna be a Star Fleet science officer.

I don't know what all you considerbthe reset but from what I recall the trailer made it fairly clear Pine was playing a young Kirk who had washed out/wasn't aiming at Starfleet and was at the beginning of his career.

I guess producers figure Kirk is the most world wide identifiable character from the IP and had to take it as a banker to the studio

Trailer contains clip of Pike saying "enlist in Starfleet" to Kirk, and Nero saying "James T Kirk was a great man - but that was another life" - although I don't recall if that line made it into the film.

From memory, trailer or not all the press at the time made it clear this was "new" Star Trek and a reboot of the franchise. Appreciate if you missed that and went into it cold it'd be jolting though.

Agree with the comment above - as much as I enjoy Into Darkness, if you're rebooting you don't "need" to rehash a version of an existing story from the other timeline, you can just go off doing your own thing (which I understand Beyond does? Haven't seen it yet). Khan does nod at it in the film though - he says something about the destruction of Vulcan resulting in them being found adrift - so Space Seed and WoK don't happen.

Perhaps there was deliberate intent to look at TOS story and how it would differ within the new timeline of events - but intent doesn't really matter when it comes down to whether you like it or not.

The first JJ Trek was a ton of fun, but it was a dumber than a box of hair. And I enjoyed Into Darkness in the theater, and then hated it a little more every time I thought about it later on. I had a minor quibble or two with Beyond, but it was an absolute blast and easily the best Trek film since First Contact.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I just watched Beyond on the plane, and it help up remarkably well on a second viewing. Sure the main plot is hardly creative, but the characters fills their roles so well, and the optimism of the movie feels so refreshing. Diversity and compassion is our strength, is a theme that runs throughout and is proven right again and again. One would think such a thing would not be controversial but it feels nice having it stated so strongly.
