That's the general gist of it. They stop being Die Hard movies after 3 (which itself is a bit of a contentious entry in the franchise) and just become generic action movies with big explosions and terrible jokes. They're fine as mindless action flicks but they are no longer Christmas movies or true Die Hard style.

I'd argue that Die Hard 4 is passable as a Die Hard film. It has bad guys doing their thing and McClain bumbling his way into things, killing a ton of dudes and saying cool shit.

It's 5 that is the true crime against the franchise. From what I've read Die Hard 5 was supposed to be some other film and they just sort of shoe horned it into being a Die Hard film. It shows.

But like Silencer says, I'd argue that Die Hard 1 + 2 are the true Die Hard films and 3 and 4 are the 90s and 00s interpretations of what made action films cool in the 80s.

Much like how Lethal Weapons 1 + 2 are cooler, more traditional films and Lethal Weapns 3 + 4 slowly ramp up the action and charicatures.

God only know what the Die Hard Prequel is going to be like.

I've only watched the first 3 Die Hards but even 2 and 3 are pretty average. Only 1 is a really great film.

That's absolutely amazing.

I'm trying to think of movie series that got better after 3+ movies in and I can only come up with Rocky movies. I loved the last 2 but they were major reboots years later.

Just thought of Harry Potter too, I'm sure there's some others out there I'm drawing a blank on.

Mad Max (Mad Max, Road Warrior, Beyond Thunderdome, Fury Road) is the other guaranteed "got better as it went along" one that I can think of. I haven't seen the Anne of Green Gables movies, so I can't tell you if they got better, the same, or worse as they went on.

By better do actually mean better than the first films or just maintained a high level of quality/enjoyment?

If we're talking about series that got progressively better after a long while, I admit that's a hard one to come up with.

But how many movie series are there that has more than 3 entries? With out a reboot?

Fast and Furious 5 and 6 are the best films in the series IMO.

There has to be some of the later Star Trek films that were good.

Some Police Academy films?

I know it's a sin to mention here on the forum but I think Indiana Jones 4 is the best film in the series.

We've had this discussion many times.

My position is that the old Indiana Jones films are not as good as people remember them and that, depending upon your reaction to the Fridge scene, you will either love or hate Indy 4. I thought Indy was fantastic.

Typically I then supplement this opinion by stating that the Star Wars prequels are just as good if not better than the originals, and then people really lose their shit.

I recently watched all four on a a lazy day back to back... Apt, 4 is garbage, when your answer to a fair few plot devices is to hold up a skull and hope for the best, it soon gets boring never mind the monkeys, gophers and vine swinging. I didn't like the way the ending played either, Indy is mythical, not sci-fi. The fridge scene was daft but that didn't really bother me, the sword fighting straddling cars in the jungle was a worse scene than the fridge one.

3 - Crusade, 1 - Raiders, 2 - Doom, 4 - Skull is my order in rank of quality for Indy films.

3 and 1 very close but I think to the argument on the Big Bang Theory to why 3 tops 1 haha...



But seriously, I just prefer 3 with Connery. 2 over 4 is very close too but 2 was the first one I saw as a child and holds a special memory.
