As mentioned in the Walker thread, I went to see FURIOUS 7 last night and loved it. These movies are just so entertaining, and this one is no exception. Firtly, if you're worried about the Direction not being handled by the amazing Justin Lin....don't, James Wan seems like he studied at the School of Lin, and everything works as well as Lin's films...and Wan even goes above that to throw in his own flourishes (he likes to affix the camera to shit that's falling or turning during a fight so it follows the action; The Rock is fighting and he and the bad guy get knocked over a couch...the camera is strapped to the couch so all three change direction).

Statham is basically channeling his Transporter badass in the villain role and it works. Surprisingly Kurt Russel shows up and that was super cool.

All the gravity-defying, physics-defying stunt and car action work is well on display and is a friggin blast throughout. The Abu Dhabi scenes in particular are great.

Soundtrack is badass.

Unlike Gina Carano, Ronda Rousey can't deliver lines for shit...but goddamn she gets a fantastic fight sequence and the power on display is amazing and well worth it.

The Paul Walker stuff is all handled well and surprisingly he'd shot MOST of the film before his death, you can only really see his brothers used in wide angle shots in the 3rd act...everything else was Paul.

The ending is bittersweet and sad, and there is one bit of cinematography that made the tears flow for me. Luckily my wife was sobbing beside me so I was not alone in being overcome with emotion.

I will say this, I thought they'd planned to bring Lucas Black's character from TOKYO DRIFT into the franchise proper and onto Dom's team as a replacement to Paul...but they don't, and his bit realy is just a cameo where he explained to Dom what happened to Han.

Anyways, another great entry and can't wait for film 8 (Which Diesel was talking about already that it goes to New York City), and see what's next. This was apparently the first film in a third trilgy within the franchise, and it does actually feel that way world-building-wise.

EDIT: Oh and the movie is doing bananas business, the box office is already somewhere north of $125 million and the math puts it by Monday at over $140 million.

Watched all of the Rocky movies as I haven't truly seen them before.

Rocky - Fucken great movie.

Rocky 2: Still pretty damned good.

Rocky 3: Alright, sure why not

Rocky 4: Ehhhhhh... fine.

Rocky 5: Why?

Rocky Balboa: Not too bad actually. Also, how the hell is that guy so in shape?

Its funny but when I was watching the these films I was actually excited and into the fights and felt happy whenever Rocky made it or won. The music definitely is energizing and works well. I can see why so many were made.

Now going to watch Top Gun for the first time...

Top Gun is legitimately one of the greatest action movies ever made and anyone who dislikes it clearly has a stunted soul. Sorry guys.


Rocky is alright but even in the first one the actual boxing is so distractingly bad and boring that it detracted from the film.

So, Fast & Furious 7. A great send-off for Paul Walker, and for the most part all the enjoyable ludicrousness I've come to expect. There were a few moments where it broke plausibility even within the context of this series, though.

Most notably flying a drone-armed helicopter into the US at all, let alone flying around and blowing up civilians for half an hour without the army showing up.
Jason Statham popping up at every scene made me laugh, though. I enjoyed how the gang made this elaborate spectacular plan to get to the convoy using airplanes and parachutes and Statham just drove through the woods.

Also Ronda Rousey was terrible and her scene was pointless. Should have left her out.

Very much. I thought it from the trailers but they've stepped it up another level from the heist-team movies of the previous two to a whole Bond/Mission Impossible thing.

The weird thing about Rousey is that despite her real talent only being in combat sports and hitting an edge for media, she's incredibly popular.

I mean, massively, millions of dollars popular. People LOVE/HATE her. If she can improve to even Chuck Norris levels of acting, she may have a career into her forties as the go to action woman.

I don't watch MMA much but a running commentary on another forum I go on from a couple of guys who watch each year's TUF have made me believe that she's a bit of a loon and also not a nice person so I confess I was pre-judging her a bit, but she was terrible. At least Gina Carano has charm.

Yeah, I like her really. She's never going to be a serious actress but she could easily build a similar kind of career to Jason Statham if she makes the right choices- she's got the charm, the looks and she can deliver a line.

Rousey is someone who gets drawn to "interesting opinions" more than "informed opinions". She's also anti any authority except her mother and her Armenian coaches.

I've met her a couple times and her friends used to run in similar circles as mine here in NY. She's incredibly nice to strangers and lights up a room in surprising fashion.

But she has terrible takes on national events or issues out of her wheel house. And she shoots her mouth off about it too. Sandy Hook conspiracy theories was just the biggest one so far.
