Funny that the Jurassic World youtube ends with a bunch of Dumb and Dumber To links, cuz that's like exactly the big fear. But the trailer still made me a little giddy.

Pan has a lot of baggage (the Tiger Lily debacle chief among them) but seems like an interesting take on the story. Very iffy on that one.

Joe Wright mentioned he was trying to push boundaries with the source material Peter Pan story by casting against type...

...which explains why Adeel Akhtar (middle eastern heritage) will play Smee, Leni Zieglmeier (Black) is playing Wendy Darling, Jack Charles (Australian aboriginal) is playing the Chief, Na Tae-joo (korean) is playing Kwahu, Nonso Anozie (Nigerian) is playing Bishop.

That's more than half the main cast diversely cast.

I think people immediately freaked out over Mara being cast as Tiger Lily and didn't bother to look at the rest of the cast changes.

I'm not greatly interested in Jurassic World, but the fact that they appear to have introduced an Alien-ish element rather than just going bigger scale has piqued my interest. I hope they show nothing of the new dinosaur in any of the marketing.

I think people understand the legacy of depictions of Native Americans in western fiction, particularly Hollywood's redface output over its entire existence (up to and including The Lone Ranger), and -- rightly -- chalked this up as another slap in the face. Nobody freaked out, they recognize the continuum.

I believe as well according to Joe Wright that the tribe is multinational on purpose, with all nationalities present in it. I think that's why it's not using traditional specifically native American gear, but takes aspects and styles from of a mix of many different tribal looks globally to make up something new. Pause the trailer on the tribal scenes and I think you'll find it is very much a made up tribal "look" that isn't anything specific from any place we know of IRL. If the tribe consists of many different nationalities and skin colours (the ones we know of so far are white, asian, and aboriginal) it's entirely possible that they are conscripts in the lost land that is Neverland.

All of which AVOIDS the inherant racism involved in the stereotypical view of the tribe in the book and previous adaptations (like the super racist Disney one) by making it be somehting entirely else.

I mean only seeing the film will confirm it, but as far as I can see in the trailer the tribe appears to be as fantastical as the flying ship and Neverland itself would be.

I do understand the reasoning, I just think it avoids one trap (whitewashing) by falling into a few others (premature rainbow post-racialism, failing to hire Native actors). I'm certainly not saying it's on the level of that new Ridley Scott disaster, and I'll probably see it when it's on DVD. I like the Pan story in general and actually quite liked the Jason Isaacs movie. It's been a while and it certainly wasn't perfect, but it handled the casting better IMO.

Actually, which of those is more prevalent through the entire series? Then it makes me wonder about the original Crichton book ...
