Im sorry but doc oc was a fail. In the film he was a corn fed red blooded american. But in the comics he was like dutch or something. I didnt like Toby in those films. Willem Dafoe and James Franco always rock though. I was dissapointed when they made Kirsten Dunst Mary Jane. No Bueno. The Amazing Spider Film was fantastic. I can't wait to see the new one.

So I saw Frozen and I probably aged out of the ideal demographic for Disney movies long ago, but it was a friend's birthday and she really wanted to go, so I went.

There's big problems with the movie as a whole, but every movie from Disney has a "Disney-fication" or oversimplification/nerfing of places, people, animals and so on. There's a message of female empowerment that for most of the movie is mixed with the "need a man" thing, so I'm not sure how I feel about that. The snowman isn't movie-ruining like Jar Jar was, the characters are pretty good, except for the bad guy who kinda swerves in from nowhere.

Ultimately, it's a good Disney movie, but it shouldn't displace any of the top Disney movies. It's a huge hit with young girls, which is kind of cool to see, but I really wish there were better movies for them to like than this.

The worst thing with frozen was that song in the middle witch sounded like a american pop-rock band. Truly dreadful and just ripped you out of the setting.

It bothered me too, but I just let it go.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Spoiler

It should be noted though that the makers of the film had to modify it from what Disney bigwigs originally wanted. So it's taking younger up and coming writers and directors to challenge the older guard who stick to traditionalist ideals. After Merida, and now Elsa and Anna...I can see this trend continuing. And for THAT alone...FROZEN gets high, high marks. You are never going to win the war in one film, but if you can win a battle, that's a start. Just my opinion.

I agree that Frozen being made in this way and it being a huge hit is a great thing. It's historically significant, although I wish The Princess and the Frog had been the one to do this (wish it'd been better story-wise, song-wise and commercially) so it too could have this level of impact. Tiana was a great character.

At the same time, I think it will get surpassed by other movies in this vein in the near future. It's not a timeless classic. Granted, just about all of Disney's movies have some enormous problems with them and they still keep on tickin' and making money.

Went to the VM thing. Sat in the second mezzanine (the Dolby Theatre is, in fact, huge) so I didn't get to see any celebrity butt prints (or strewn roaches) in the lower seats. We were shown the documentary on the Kickstarter-through-finished-project process, which was awesome (though perhaps a little overlong for people who were eager to see the cast). After that it was a typical fun panel -- good questions, lots of joking, some insight, and questions from the audience. Really happy I got to go, and more eager than ever to see the movie when I can.

Edit: Here's the best pic we got, so we were pretty distant:

Just watched Jack the Giant Slayer.

This is not a great movie. The manuscript isn't good enough and the budget not big enough for it to be as crazy as it could be. That said? I FUCKING LOVE GIANTS!

Giants are probably my favorite fantasy/fairytale creature. There's just something special about a humanoid being that is the size of a ten story building. There's something there about the fear big things put in us, something about the size and potential that is awe inspiring. In that sense, this film does alright. I would have loved it if it had had the budget and creative vision of something like Peter Jacksons King Kong but for what it is, Giants being giants, I thought this was an enjoyable movie.

I hope they make a sequel.

Got a DVD of [REC], [REC]2 and [REC]3: Genesis the other day, watched them all and then tried watching Quarantine. More like [REC]ordbreaking, [REC]kless and Utter trainw[REC]k and also Quaranting about crappy Western remakes. Ine.

Seriously don't watch [REC]3 ever.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I've only seen the first two, but that's the general gist I've heard about 3. [Rec]4 is supposed to be a direct sequel to 2, a finale to the series, and will be directed by the guy who did the first two, so I'm curious if skipping 3 will hurt at all.

3 starts off as camera footage, then transforms both into the usual film style once the monsters happen and into a terrible attempt at comedy horror. I mean, a couple of dudes wear suits of armour that do nothing and there's a bride with a chainsaw and it's terrible even so. Also they criminally underuse the best character, John Sponge. It doesn't really affect the first two at all and may even make you enjoy them less, so read a synopsis on wikipedia or something and avoid sober at all costs.

Felicia Day tweeted about the casting of Tiger Lily, got some nasty responses from people equating it to Human Torch, and expanded her thoughts into a decent short essay.

Wait, when or where has the human torch been cast as a black person? Have I missed a new movie announcement or something?

Also nice article.

I saw this, and I love Felicia. She so succinctly put those shits in their places.

So this weekend, saw:

3 DAYS TO KILL - so, was this supposed to be a comedy, or what? Either way, it sucked. To my eye there seemed a lot of weird editing.

NON-STOP - so let me get this straight. US air marshals fly on British planes? You're going to save passenger lives by threatening to shoot a plane down? It's a credit to cast and crew that in spite of these absurdities, the movie almost works.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

300 Rise of Empire.

Before I talk about the film itself, can I just ask who their historical, or naval, or common fucking sense consultant was?
sure it looked pretty but when there's a 50ft swell, you don't have a battle, you sprint for the bay.

that aside, popcorn flick, did exactly what I expected.

what I liked - respectable (if somewhat over drawn) effort at tying the two films together
Eva, I was a fan of hers already but she plays the part perfectly, stonewall nuts, and suits the heavy khol eyes
Main guy (not going to try spelling it) his accent was all over the place, I don't know if he was trying to tone hjs down or it slips when hes trying the deeper inspirational voice, but he had the 1000 yard stare and gave enough to keep me engaged
The expected over the top choppery
The score, fantastic music just seemed to fit right
The set up of Darius' death
3d was well.done (saw it in imax)

what I didn't like - too many stirring speeches
too many slow mo chops
boy wonder is simply too proficient, the premise is a few good warriors with a bunch of randoms.
absolutely no heed payed to how naval warfare actually occurred there (but that's a personal thing likely, I know realism isn't what was aimed for here, but really, that wave would have wiped out the lot)
Stupidity with distances. They make everything seem so close together, I understand its to give flow to the narrative, but this always bugs me, it makes the Greeks hiding in a bay seem ridiculous when the Persians are a few hours away and could just float in and crush their ships on the beach. Plus big.man watching the final fight, can only assume thats to set up number three, which will carry on from an amalgamation of end of 1&2. But distance skew is something that annoys me in so many films (looking at you Peter J)

what I wanted, mindless chop 300 action
got bonus tits
6 seemingly easy decapitations out of 8.5

Yeah, I don't think accuracy was in Frank Miller's mind when he wrote either film's source material. It's all about style, not substance.

Luckily the history is in there...it's just buried under heaps of slo-mo, gouts of 3D blood, and ridiculous (but awesome) fight scenes. It's just REALLY buried. LOL

I saw Il Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty), an Italian film from 2013. Gorgeous. Brilliant. Every positive adjective applied to something like Wolf of Wall Street applies even more to this and what's more - this movie has a heart, an old, fatuous one, but one nevertheless. It got a 9.7 out of 10 from me.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2358891/

The primary review of it by flickernatic from the UK on IMDB does it justice:

Quote

This lengthy (142mins) intriguing, complex movie follows the reflections of former novelist, Jem Gambardella (Toni Servillo), as he contemplates his past and current life, a life, it would appear, of lost opportunities both personal and professional.

As a member of the wealthy elite of Roman society, he participates in their empty pastimes; parties fuelled with drink and drugs, bizarre art events and casual sexual encounters with beautiful but soulless women. Gambardella is both participant and observer, watching himself as much as his associates, mysterious animals trapped in the gilded cage that is Rome with all the stunning beauty of its architecture, fountains, sculptures, and paintings.

[SPOILER STUFF TAKEN OUT]
Everywhere, life presents contradictions, material and spiritual, emotional pretence and genuine feeling, the Eternal City and its mortal inhabitants, . . .

If all this sounds too heavy, everything is carried along by a welter of gorgeous images complemented by music that varies from the ethereal to hefty thumping dance beats. And the actors' performances are never less than utterly convincing.

[SPOILER STUFF TAKEN OUT]

This is an sumptuous, sensuous, fascinating movie which for me at least probably needs more than one viewing to fully appreciate. Don't miss it!

I will add the caveat that the "sexual encounters with beautiful/souless women" is not a good way to describe what happens. No sex is ever shown. We cut away, always, and the second encounter means a great deal to Jeb (the main character). Tremendous movie.
