Punishment for buying Apple.

I liked Looper a fair bit. "Time travel exists" then just got on with the show. Also brutal at times. Liked the plot.

Watching slapshot again. Such an amazing movie.

Also, apparently JJ Abrams _is_ doing the new Star Wars movie.

i saw Django Unchained today. It was ridiculously awesome. Having not seen Inglourious Basterds, the last Tarantino film I saw was Death Proof, and even that was only my third film of his. It's reassuring to know he hasn't lost his talent for mixing over-the-top violence with terrific storytelling. Christoph Waltz deserves a Golden Globe for his performance, he was by far my favourite. That's not to say Foxx and DiCaprio weren't excellent as well! It was a bit long though, my ass was numb by the time we left the theatre...

He got a Golden Globe for that, actually. And if Waltz is as good in Django as he was in Basterds, then he was no doubt stealing every second of every scene he was in. So yeah, that will be his second (I believe) GG for Best Supporting Actor. Along with a mountain of other awards to boot (no, seriously, look at his list on Wiki...and he deserves every one...)

He's not quite, and I actually thought Jackson was better than him, but yeah, Waltz was still great.

Watched The Last Stand. Wasn't very good (including most of the action scenes), only intermittently funny (largely due to Guzman and Knoxville, Arnie only had a couple good lines), and stupid without much fun to compensate. Very disappointed.

Inception isn't that great, though it's definitely worth the watch for its ambition and style, so I think you can get away with a fine for that one.

Inglourious Basterds though? That's a crime punishable by Justin Bieber videos.

Inglorious Basterds was one Christoph Waltz performance from being a pile of horse manure. It is revenge porn that rises to respectability purely because of Waltz's gift at mesmerizing the viewer.

It is npt a "must watch" like Pulp Fiction.

Inception is actually the better movie to my opinipn.

^^This. though I also liked Fassbender in IB. But yeah, it's revenge porn thinly disguised as something better...Tarantino hasn't crafted a truly good COMPLETE film in many years.

I don't think it's disguised as anything... it's a revenge flick, pure and simple. Just a really really good one. Imo.

Yep.

Django Unchained is "revenge porn" as well.

I don't think so. I view Crank 2 as the far superior revenge film to Inglorious Basterds. It's got better pacing, somehow has better internal consistency and continuity and the film doesn't essentially revolve around making people feel good for simultaneously hating Nazis and wanting to see the Nazis do evil stuff.

I've little problem with revisions and alternate histories, but Tarantino has moved from having his movies being great stories with weird characters to movies involving weird characters with okay stories.

I haven't seen Django, but a few friends I trust say they liked some of it, but had serious problems with other parts.

They're both (along with Death Proof) modern takes on exploitation films of various genres; they're not serious attempts at historical fiction. Critiquing them for being exploitative is like complaining that this women-in-prison film had too many shower scenes. It's definitely okay not to like them, like it's just not for you (and they certainly are different beasts than pre-Grindhouse stuff, though Kill Bill was an obvious transition). But there's no gap between what QT set out to accomplish and what he did accomplish with either of these movies. Django isn't a spiritual successor to Roots, it's Super Fly meets Blazing Saddles meets spaghetti western.

The thing is that actual exploitation or satirical movies like Shaft or Black Dynamite do their job much better in my opinion than Tarantino does with his movies.

The Grindhouse movies were just bad. I was bored during everything that wasn't Kurt Russell and the girls in the bar. They made Rose McGowan with a machine gun leg boring and unoriginal!

At some point, the references need to stop and original content, focused on the story, needs to come. I have to see Django to see if it's there, but even in Kill Bill, I got tired of some things.

I can see some of those problems- Tarantino sucks at pacing over a whole film and always has, though it's got more obvious since he stopped cutting up his films and just made them mostly chronological (Kill Bill Vol.1 is the only one where the tempo builds naturally and without a hitch).

He can stage an individual scene, especially of dialogue, like no-one else though.

Well, what I'm saying is I can understand how it's not for you, but I'm also saying for others it hits that exact sweet spot between reference/nostalgia and big unique QT moments. I wouldn't give either IB or Django an A+ or anything personally, but I wasn't bored by either at all, and some of the goofiest stuff in both were my favorite elements. And I liked Death Proof a lot (though yah the Robert Rodriguez movie whose name I forget I liked a lot less, except some effective gross-out moments). His goals in this phase right now as a filmmaker just don't line up with your goals as a film watcher, is all.
