I was most disturbed when I watched it by the Water Buffalo beheading...which is real and the crew got in MEGA trouble for showing a Water Buffalo snuff clip. I was rather disturbed by that.
I think the whole film has this bizarre sickening dream-like vibe that I can't stand. I would never openly subject myself to that film ever again.

If I remember correctly, Redux has the scene where Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) and crew have lunch/dinner with a French family deep in the jungle.
I recommend the documentary about the making of the movie, Hearts of Darkness.

I had to study it for a uni course this semester so I watched it 4 times in a month.
That water buffalo scene was real? Shit, I knew it looked pretty fucking real, but figured it was a masterful fake.

I might give the 2001 cut a look at some point, then.
As for dream/nightmare vibe... I kept thinking of Dante's Inferno throughout the film.

It's supposed to feel like a (bad?) acid trip apparently, and I can definitely see where Coppola was going with it. Not sure how well it works with the book or even on its own, but that's a lengthy scholarly discussion I don't want to get into right now.

Don't. The 49 extra minutes are almost entirely excruciatingly boring.
It's a brilliant, brilliant film otherwise; I love the vibe of it that QT seemed to hate. Part fever-dream, part (very) dark fairytale- it's a masterpiece in cinematic theatricality.
Who here's seen Fitzcarraldo? It's not quite as good, but it has a slightly similar vibe, is also brilliant, and also has a documentary about how difficult it was to make.

Just watched Grave of the Fireflies.
While I did not break down into sobbing like a girl, it did make me all glassy eyed, which counts for a lot, I guess.
I wouldn't, however, precisely call it an anti-war film. While, naturally, Seita loses everything due to the war, to me, the war isn't the focus, it's the setting. It has a strong anti-war message, but more important than what caused it, is the struggle to survive, I think. The way I received it, it didn't matter why all this happened, all that was important is that it did, and coping with loss, living on somehow... I don't know, maybe I misunderstood, but that's how I see this film.

I cam across this on the Awesomer.
They say to lower one's expectations, though I'm not sure we can go that low...
Same producers as 300 but without the director that made 300 work. Though that hasn't stopped them from trying to copy the style wholesale.
The plot seems... well I'm going to be honest it doesn't seem to make sense. And unlike Clash of the Titans which clearly did not take itself seriously (even in the trailer) this movie does and it looks bad.
Hell they've even got Greek soldiers using Roman swords.

I caught the trailer yesterday, and it looks truly shite, in a way that surpasses even how shite the Clash of the Titans remake was.
Clash of the Tits however - I would watch the shit out of that film.

So, the Immortals were that elite masked unit that the Spartans faced in 300 right?
Is this supposed to be tied together?
From the trailer I didn't really understand who the Immortals were. An army? or the Gods?

Movies watched recently:
The King's Speech: Brilliant. Firth deserved the nod. Unsurprising it won Best Picture, considering it was British, well acted, and a great story. Well done all-around. 8.5/10.
Skyline: Holy fuck this was bad. I mean, even hoping all I could get was decent special effects it was bad. So bad, it's verging on be funny. Took itself to seriously to get that honor, though. 2.5/10. Was barely worth the dollar.
Hereafter: Cool premise. Nice story lines. 15 to 20 minutes to short, IMO. A little more resolution would have made it a solid flick, as opposed to a decent one. That being said, I can dig what the writer and director was going for with the film. 6/10. Really liked Damon in this film.

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Oh you know this is going to be bad. Like shockingly, terrifyingly bad. It looks like they've hamfisted together Theseus and the Minotaur with the Titanomachy, and placed a Titan that is never mentioned in said war as the antagonist to get around the fact that he should be in the very place he's trying to free his companions from. Oh, and Greek soldiers fighting in Roman gear? I think if I watch this movie my head will explode from the complete butchering of history and mythology that is guaranteed to take place here.

I reckon Immortals looks better than Clash of the Titans - it looks like it has more visual imagination and genuine epic stuff. Not that I think it looks really good (Clash of the Titans was a film with one good second, courtesy of Mads Mikkelsen), but it could be okay. Except that Henry Cavill looks like he carries none of the charisma and gravitas necessary to carry off that sort of role, which is a very bad sign for Superman if that bears out.
