Watched District 9 and Sex Drive last night.

District was pretty damn good. A movie like that has a high chance of cheesiness, but this one pulled it off.

Sex Drive is actually pretty funny considering it went straight to DVD. And in case you make the same mistake my gf did, no, its not a pornl.

I saw Gran Torino the other day. I thought it was a great movie, and every time Clint snarled or something it brought a smile to my face cos you can tell he loved playing that role. Good ending too. :)

I thought it was my grandpa except Clint doesnt bitch about people enough.

Watched Terminator Salvation earlier today. I thought it was decent, not as bad as i was expecting from some of the remarks on here. But basically it boils down to this.

This was a friggin Terminator movie! From after Judgement Day! This movie should have been epic! But no. We get...meh, enjoyable.

Bullshit!

Saw avatar in a tacky highlands cinema last night. No 3d glasses were provided.
I assume its the 3d that makes this film great, because the predictable as a cheap porno crapfest I saw should not have lifted a billion pennies, let alone dollars

you're about right on that comment.

3D adds a LOT to that movie. For real.

And the robots. Robots fights always make a movie for me, regardless of the movie's actual content.

====

Watched quantum of solace last night, and was surprised on a second watch-thru just how little content there is in that movie

And I didn't really catch that stealing water is about the lamest thing a bond villain could have EVER done.

And the main badguy's sidekick didn't do anything cool the whole movie except fall down a flight of stairs.

Action and all that was good, but I wish they'd start making Dr. No quality bond movies again

Yeah, i was expecting Solace to be at least as good as Royale. Sadly disappointed. It was just boring overall.

maddox covered solace perfectly. the plot is based loosely on a real event, but watered down, to make it less believable.

haha....I remember reading that after QoS came out and thought it was a perfect review. Too bad that guy never updates his site anymore...used to be nice getting an epic rant every few weeks.

The movie just didn't go anywhere...a few points were discussed in the maddox rant but I definitely noticed on the second rewatch

  • you never ever have a fucking clue where the characters are in the movie other than "the desert" or some euro city. If it wasn't for the location captions at the beginning of each scene you would have absolutely no indication whatsoever.
  • I get that the badguys were trying to mis-direct MI6 into thinking the whole thing was about oil so they could get their hands on the precious water....but they didn't play up that part of the plot at all.
  • Further to the above, even though its explicitly stated that MI6 is out to get bond in this one, I never got the feeling anybody was out to get him at any point in the movie.
  • The boat chase was fucktarded. 40hp johnson outboard on an aluminium boat outruns and ploughs through a 300hp fiberglass speedboat, and 2 zodiacs with huge effing motors on them. Plus he runs away on the OCEAN. Where the hell is he going to hide if they come after him with a couple more speedboats or god forbid a helicopter.
  • The badguy sidekick....oh man, he ruined the whole thing for the badguy team. The main badguy even had to stop him at one point and make him protect his back. Sidekicks should do that by default to great effect, demonstrating a bond-fighting ability surpassed only occasionally and ONLY by the main bad guy.
  • The end scene where he catches up with the guy he was after, with absolutely zero pretext, no lead up, just cut to a scene where he has the "arch nemesis" trapped. That scene couldn't have been less convincing if it were written, acted and filmed by me.
EDIT

One really sweet part, that offsets at least one of the points above was the use of this plane

http://en.wikipedia....ermacchi_SF.260

in the plane chase scene. Totally awesome plane.

Saw Up In The Air today. Good film. Fun, though a tad depressing at times. Recommended.

I went to see Edge of Darkness yesterday. Mel on a crusade, can't complain. It left me wanting to catch the original BBC series, so it was a good premise but poorly executed. I would like to see the UK 80s equivalent without all the guns. I expect it would be more sinister and political and less Mel having a punchup or gunfight. I imagine the idea was more novel back then too, we are overfamiliar with conspiracy theories these days. You could see what was coming a mile off in the movie and some characters were underdone, thrown in to be true to the original material (I assume) or to facilitate a plot turn rather than add to the movie as a whole.

I'd wait to rent the dvd or to catch it on tv if I could have my time again but it was an alright way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Finally got around to watching District 9 the other day, enjoyed it. Special effects were very good but I thought the ending was a bit off and the overuse of the word "fook" got on my tits after a while.

On a more tragic and frustrating note, this review says everything that needs to be said....

Which is worse. John Carpenters "The Thing" adaption was good because it was about suspense and the creeping terror. What is this thing? What does it want? What does it actually look like. All these things are answered towards the end of the film. You get to see it form some giant terror and then it burns to death... supposedly, as Kurt Russel and the black guy lay freezing to death in the snow.

What is the prequel going to offer us? We already know what it is and what it can do. Basically, the only, possible improvement they may be able to make is with the effects. And even that is probably going to fail unless they spend a lot of money on it. It's hard to trump the sheer disgusting awesome of eighties animatronics and film make-up.

Not worse in my opinion...since your dislike for this is exactly the same if it was a remake or a prequel...So i would say its equally daft :p
But who knows what they can come up with for a prequel might be something fresh!...yet we know for sure how it turns out if its a simple remake...

As far as I've heard the prequel is supposed to be set in the Norwegian science station from the beginning of the movie.

Yup...either way you look at it...its gonna be shit.
but for me at least they are not trying to recreate the classic original (sacrilege!!) but rather tell the story of what happened before.

Bah, they should make a sequel by setting it 200 years in the future with a new set of MTV special effects and the latest pretty young things outa Hollywood. The Thing is back ! So they dig up Kurt Russel and Keith David's frozen corpses, reanimate them with modern science and give them chain cannons. They kill fucking everybody, take a dump on the corpses and finish the film like the 1982 version, drinking whiskey.

That's a movie right there.

To put a whole new spin on the story, if you have a spare 10 mins, this is amazing.
