No, they're faction names. Clans are sortof what vampire 'race' you come from, whereas faction describes your political allegiance and view on how vampires should act. So like the gangrel are beast-affinitied vampires (clan) but could belong to the camarilla or anarchs type of thing.
And thus we don't have names... our names are our alt-names

Yeah, I think you are mistaken. Sab and Carm seem like vampire "nations", with Anarch a little monastary in the empty land in between (so like a mini-nation), while Baali are some sort of underground black magic cult (not in the mafia sense!) that nobody likes and operate underground either in the nations or outside of 'em
Clan is like bloodlines or something. The ones in the OP were Giovani, Tremere and Tzimizce - apparently mages. Maybe meanas can tell us if clans are exlusive to a certain nation or if they cross borders. The clans have specialties and of course pertain to certain abilities, so if someone had a "Fireball" day ability they'd be one of those 3 mage clans, etc etc
edit: X-post and I'm totally wrong. Haven't gotten that far in Meanas' assigned readings yet!
Carmilla are vampires that believe that vampires should remain hidden through the use of the masquerade. The anarchs seem to have a similar view, but dont believe that power should be concentrate into a few individuals as the cost of other vampires (the newer generations especially). The Sabbat formed in opposition to the Camarilla, believing that humans are nothing more than cattle to be dominated. The Baali are a bit different as they seem to be both a bloodline and an independant faction who's main focus is on interacting with demons and causing chaos and blood sacrifice to appease them. Baali can come from any bloodline, but one you join them your bloodline becomes baali too, as you gain the powers associated with whatever demon you worship. ALthough I might be reading that wrong.

Yes. Anarch, Camarilla, and Sabbat are sects, which are conglomerates of vampire clans.
The clans are listed here.
I'm actually kind of puzzled you would ask this because you were given an assignment in your role PM, which would say your sect AND your clan... unless of course, you were Baali, which is neither, it's a 'bloodline or extinct clan' as the article describes.
I have a
(Clan) (Sect)
I thought the Clan name was my name and the Sect name was my clan name.
Hrm, that's pretty plausible to mistake if you aren't familiar with the story (or didn't read up the articles yet).

I admit to a similar confusion to Fener until I did the reading. The fact that we cant reveal clan names makes me think that something is afoot, but I really have no idea what.

Meanas, I'd be equally wary of speculation on that matter as I Fener is about power speculation. If there is something afoot, it may be for one sect, or for all, but I think it should be left alone so that if its beneficial to only one (and it would probably be most beneficial to Anarchs, as we need something to give us an advantage) we don't make a change in behaviour significantly more noticeable.

I am pleased I wasn't the only one suffering some confusion. I scanned the links, too much to read in one go, and I have been trying to keep up with all the posts. I'm certainly hoping that night (day) means I can make more sense of things. Pity about Tellan but as has already been said it seemed a good day 1 case.
