im pretty sure you dont. It seems to be if your pupil wins that starting match then you wont get any experience, but if they lose you will

If you create pupils from your own player, you MUST change your ip or he wont count....trust me

hmm i havent noticed it. mine seemed to give me experience if i won the original battle and not give experience if the pupil won it and im pretty sure i didnt change my ip for the first 5 characters as they were all created at home

I always use one character to make pupils and you alway get the green "new pupil" tab but i never get any exp points...unless i reboot my router and do it...

Not so...my son made fighter from the same computer/ISP and I get points every time he levels up. Whereas Bhurnae made pupils for me and I got nowt. I think, as Baudin says, it's something to do with winning the match, and as Anomander is level 9 I can't see any new pupils winning!

@ST: My guy is just like yours, excepting small differences in weapons and ~15 hp, but he gets OWNED every time (14 victories at level SEVEN). How do you do it?

Well the 15HP is a pretty big difference, you know

. I think a lot of it is to do with the weapons: the knife is very useful - you tend to get more than one strike in with it, and it does as much damage as the shortsword most of the time. IMO, Axe > Club, because while the club does a bit more damage, it misses A LOT more. And the fan is just a sucky knife, I'd really prefer it if I didn't have it, to be honest.

So that probably explains some of the differences.
