After finding myself always in search of a new series or epic fantasy books to read, I thought it might be interesting to see what this forum has to offer in terms of advice, or fantasy books that are a "must read".

So let's hear it!

Edit: Furthermore, if you are looking for more books to read yourself, feel free to come in and ask around. I'm pretty sure there's enough people here to help you find what you need.

Got many other threads with this topic, hopefully you get some great stuff from there. Especially since there is so much good sci-fi/fantasy out there.

My personal recommendation would be The Dresden novels by Jim Butcher, they are pure win.

Gotcha, thanks for that one mate. It tried the 'quote' thing but it kept messing up because I was replying to people individual posts. I got it now though :ball:

It's not a series but try Guy Gavriel Kay. I liked Tigana, Sailing to..(?) can't remember the other one right now. I didn't like his first trilogy, about the kids from T.O. but his writing got so much better later on. I haven't read his new one yet.

the words you are looking for is "Sailing to Sarantium" and "lord of Emperors"--the Sarantine Mosaic Duology

and yes, it is an extremely well-written duology, though it's not as cation packed as a lot of the literature out there. It reads much rather like pseudo-historical fiction, but that doesn't make it any less great, and there's a number of obvious parallells.

Thanks Mentalist, I couldn't think of the titles, being wiped out after work has that strange effect on me. I discovered Kay in the fall of '99 I read Tigana first and enjoyed it, the wiping out of everyones memories of the place is a little hard to swallow by the end but I still think it works.

eh..
Tigana's good, but it's not my favourite

i liked Lions of Al-Rassan, the Sarantine Mosaic, and I daresay, even Last Light of the Sun better.
A song for Arbonne was the weakest of the bunch, but still really good.

Thanks I couldn't remember all the titles, read em all, I do remember enjoying Lions though. I thought his first trilogy was the weakest. Have you read his newest book? (no I can't remember the title? surprised?)

The Fionavar Tapestry had some nice moments, though its' nowhere as gritty and dark as what I got into reading now.
I'd say it's a good stepping stone, going from Eddings and Feist to the more serious stuff like Erikson, Martin, Cook, Bakker, etc.

I haven't read Ysabel ( I believe that's the latest of GG Kay's works), but I've heard things suggesting it wasn't great.

I'll have to check this series out in the future then. Speaking of Feist, whats peoples general opinion on him on these forums? I haven't heard a lot of mention of Feist on here and I consider his books to be some of the best ever written.

@Assail: His early books are generally considered good, but his newer stuff (like...um...whatshisname...the orphan or whatever who gets trained to do just about every single remotely cool thing Feist can think of, to the point he isn't cool at all) is generally rushed and, well, bad.

I think my opinion is shared by many others on this board.

Tal Hawkins... but he doesn't learn magic, so that makes him an okay character. My own opinion, of course. I'd agree the quality of the books begin to decrease after the Serpent War series, but many others make the cut-off point after the original Riftwar Series.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Right on. I generally liked the new series that he did. VERY disappointed that
Spoiler
and the general way the books are going. I miss some of the old characters. All in all though, I don't mind his new pieces.
