So, i've been playing "Vampire: the Masquerade: Bloodlines" lately.
It is a super sick game, and I believe it's still got replayabily value for e, so it'll keep me busy for a while.
Originally, I stumbled onto it when I finished "Invisble War" and was looking for somthing similar.
for those who don't know: I'm taling about an FPS with a lot of RPG elements, that gives you an interesting story, a certain of game freedom (multiple ways to achieve objectives) and involves building up character stats/skills and/or special abilities.
From what i've heard, BioShock is supposed to be similar, but I doubt it'll run onmy laptop.
anyone know of any other older games like that? these are largely FPS games, but they don't boil down to simply killing everyone in sight.

Maybe the thief series is what you're looking for... they're old though, but the 2 one was especially well recieved. Just see Yatzee's review to understand.

Fallout 3 is a great RPG with a completely open world and non-linear gameplay. Not a traditional FPS, but it is in FP (you can play in 3rd person too, but it sucks). Also, the variety of weapons you can get is great for playing it over and over.

@ED: my 128 MB video makes next-gen games a possibility out there in a distant future when I either upgrade or gt a new laptop
currently i'm looking at System Shock, and i think I may get TRON 2.0 again. I played it before, but it was on an old PC and it was ungodly slow.
Teh wery point is that I don't mind FPS as such--I just like "smart" FPS, such as Hitman, for example.
@ Apt: I may look into Thief, thanks.
as far as Fallout goes, i'm considering getting the first 2 parts right now.

I tried playing Fallout 2, I was not impressed. The graphics and game mechanics of today have come too far compared to then. If it had been back when Diablo 2 and Baldurs Gate came out I might have been interested, but not now.

meh, i'm one of those people who places graphics in last place when it comes to rating a game.
Mentalist, would still play WarcraftII, if only the game would slow the fuck down...

I put gameplay over graphics any day but there are limits. This was bad.

Agreed Ment, i dont really take graphics into account when picking games to play. Its a bonus if its good. I'll take enjoyable gameplay over graphics any day.
And Fallout 3 is a good enough game to make up for the subpar graphics.
Unless you hate them so much it drives you crazy, then...i dont know.

nah, nothing wrong with drinking your Sunday away.
anyhow, while i'm at uni I can't download stuff actively, due to the fact that I gotta share my limited house bandwidth with 7 other people.
so any serious gaming will have to wait till May.
I'm just looking into stuff now.

I'm looking into this Oblivion Elder Scrolls, I've heard good things about it in relationtion to Fallout 3.
But is it as short as Fallout 3 was? Is it all sidequests and little main story?
I have problems finding a cheap price even though it's been 3 years.

oblivion is beautiful. I've found myself wandering around just admiring the scenery.
As for the main quest, it's fairly long, though like all open rpgs theres a lot of side quests. Sadly, they made Oblivion a lot less complex when it comes to character creation. I miss being able to specialice in axe, long sword, short sword, club, spear and so on. Instead of just blunt or sword. Oblivion is however not as broken as Morrowind, which is good.
Take good care to keep relations civil

Broken?
I actually like the sound of the game not using the old sword, axe or hammer type of specilization. I love swords but I always get annoyed if I use all my points in sword skills and I later find an awesome battle axe or something like it and my skills with it are awfull.

3 or 4 times,

RE: Oblivion. My roommate had it back in first year. it seemed rather good, from what i saw. game got a lot of criticism from series' fans b/c it did not deliver what the designers promised, but it was nonetheless an excellent product.

Thief 3 was a great game. Maybe not RPG, but great story, and multiple ways of working through it.
Well, each mission was set in a city you can roam about in to get supplies and sell stuff. The city gets opened up further throught the game as a quarrantine gets lifted.
Really good (creepy too) lots of sneaking without combat. A successful mission would have several objectives, like breaking into a mansion and targeting something specific; but without alerting any guards. They can be knocked out, but you have to hide the bodies.
You can also put lights out so they can't see you. Creepy locations too, like orphanage/asylum ruins at night.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

You will not get bored playing Oblivion. There are countless things to do in it and with the DLC, you get to travel to another realm with even more to do. I put in over 80 hours on this game with one character.
