Isn't the sisters a boost in EVE? I can't remember anymore.

You can definitely research turrets and things, too. All turrets(RPG, machine gun, flamethrower) count towards the same thing. I can't remember what they give you, though. Probably upgrades to hacking in some way, shape, or form.

shit yeah.
Had an amazing session of bioshock last night. Can't believe how much of a difference maxing out research makes. Its made killing the spider splicers a one-shotgun blast ordeal. Took out 3 elite bouncer daddies last night without dying too. The proximity mines make a huuuge difference. I also just got the crossbow, which is pretty fun but I haven't found much use for it as yet. I'm guessing I'll get more snipe opportunities in the coming levels.
Looking forward to the later levels of this game. The theatre one was starting to get a bit dodgy on the ammo supply, which made it quite a bit harder. I can only imagine the later levels get even crazier.

The crossbow is the best weapon in the game, if you ask me. Eventually you start getting trap bolts, which create a line of electricity across a hallway or room that enemies can run in. These trap bolts are the easiest way to kill a Big Daddy. Just set up a line of around 6 trap bolts and piss off the Daddy so it runs straight at you through all of the traps. Then just finish it off if you need to.
Spoilers for later regarding the death of Sander Cohen:
Spoiler
Unfortunately, the ammo thing becomes LESS of a problem instead of more, like you'd imagine. Starting now, you begin to find more and more money, and killing things should be getting easier and easier. Pretty soon, every time you see a vending machine you'll be able to max your ammo.

glad you spoilered that actually. I think I have a save from just before, so I'll reload that. Might as well experience as much as possible since I'm not the type to replay a long game like that.

I just read a new review of Bioshock 2. It sounds like the Big Sister is one hell of a badass. Evidently, in the demo, the guy playing got his ass handed to him by the Big Sis in the first level. It also implies that you get to start the game with various simple plasmids. Maybe that was just for showing off the playable demo, though.
One thing that bugged me was how the review mentioned characters that are still human, in Rapture. I think the article mentioned Rosie Lamb and Sam Sinclair(founder of Sinclair Industries or something, mentioned in the first game as being behind a lot of the plasmid research and whatnot, in Rapture). I think I am going to find it terribly hard to believe that these humans are still trying to influence Rapture - even after the events of the first game should have drawn everyone out of their holes to either help Jack or help the antagonist. Having these new characters seemingly pop out of the woodwork is going to irk me - it smells of plot device in order to get another game plot going.
ETA: Another type of Big Daddy was also confirmed! It was called a Rumbler. It sets up a perimeter of turrets and security devices around itself, making it pretty tough to kill.

Easily explained. Rapture is a big city, you never went to the whole thing. Who knows what was going on in the places you didn't go. Maybe part was separated by a flooded tunnel or something. Whatever. If it takes plot devices to get a sequel as good as the first, bring it on.

True. I guess I'm underestimating exactly how large Rapture is. I live a half hour outside of a not-very-major city, so my idea of large isn't the same as most others.
Oh! The first level in the demo was also some sort of dilapidated carnival. I just remembered.

oh. fucking. SNAP.
Just did the part where
and splicers are getting really HARD now that I'm past rapture control. I can still one-shot em with the xbow but when it comes to the shotty and the machine gun I'm starting to get spanked. Even with damage increases on both.
I would hate to try and beat this game on max difficulty. Holy shit.
I don't care if the sequel is a turd sandwich on mouldy rye. I want more.

Yeah, that moment is one of the best in any game I've played - though System Shock fanboys will rant over the fact that Bioshock was an homage to System Shock and many of the story twists are very similar, evidently.
My advice at this point would be to try and blow through the rest of the game as best you can. The upped splicer difficulty just gets annoying and turns the game from more survival horror into a more 'true' fps where all that matters is how many enemies you can mow down to clear the way for the next objective. I also tend to dislike the Olympic Heights, or whatever the level is called. Exploring apartments gets old.

yeah, the _____ heights is the one that I'm on (can't remember if its olympus or whatev)
The hephaestus (core) was the first level I really noticed the upped splicer difficulty. I never played system shock so I have no idea what's coming in this game.
Agree the splicers are becoming a bit more monotonous... I do need to use a little more strategy than "wait for them to chase you around the corner and shotgun them point blank in the face"....which is what I was doing. Surprisingly though, the hardest splicers are some of the first ones I encountered...the ledhead ones. The ones now all have machine guns and are tough as effing nails. Electroshock 3 doesn't even distract them for long. I also unlocked insta-hack for the security bots. So much fun to get a few of them following you around.
Strange now everything except turrets and cameras are ultra hard to hack. I can't even do em anymore. I just save the autohack tools for safes now. Can you research vending machines? I haven't been.
Given the cool plot twists so far, I can't bring myself to look at any walkthroughs or guides even to see how far along I am in the game. Without spoiling anything, can you give me a %complete...if I'm about 1/2 way through the Olympic heights level?

I had to look at a level list to refresh my memory, but I would guess you're around 80-85% done. Olympus Heights is where you are, now, and Apollo Square is where you'll be next(this is the part that got boring, because both Olympus Heights and Apollo Square look similar, so it wasn't like the earlier parts of the game where you went from docks to forest to mall to machinery. The last 2 'levels' - Point Prometheus and Proving Grounds - both felt like end-game: I'm suiting up to go kick some ass - levels, so I didn't really feel like they were memorable at all for some reason.
What have you been doing with the Sisters? Still saving them all or whatnot?

Cool thanks.
Still saving 100% of sisters. Come to think of it I haven't even done a save/load killing of a sister just to see what happens. Mental note to do that next time.
I figured I was getting within a few levels of the end here...but for an FPS (some say FPS/rpg...I say fps) its actually really long. I feel like I've been playing the damn thing forever. Right now I'm stoked for the final fight. Really hoping its one of those duke-nukem style use up every scrap of ammo you have and then still need a few wrench whacks to finish the job type fights.
Haven't finished a game with an end-boss like that in a good while. Don't spoiler me one way or the other.
I gotta stop hanging out in this thread. The game is so awesome I just have to comment though.
Fun too cause I have two super game enthusiast buddies that have never played Bioshock either. They are in for a treat when I lend it to them.

ha, no,
Got sidetracked with Uncharted Drakes fortune (first one), but I'm almost done that now and finishing bioshock is next on my list.
I've been playing while riding my bike trainer...dunno how that's going to go with Bioshock. Its a pretty intense game and I might forget to pedal the bike. I already forget sometimes during the intense moments of Drake's Fortune.
I did see the pre-order posters up for Bioshock 2 at the game store in the mall though. That must be coming up pretty soon.

Has the launch trailer been posted yet?
It looks awesome. Big Sister is a scary bitch.
Also, looks like they added the obligatory tank character.

ooooh, it's good. Got it on launch day, those bastards at gamestop sucked me in with free content for preordering again.
Everything right about BS1 has been brought over. It's not groundbreaking, but if you liked BS1 and would like more of the same, go nuts. They kept the good stuff, tweaked it to make some stuff better, and did it well. I haven't played the multiplayer much, not super impressed but I'm not a huge fan of multiplayer fps.
The only bitch is that some of the sense of wonder is gone, simply because you've been here before. Well, and the hacking minigame is a lot less fun. Since that's the biggest bitch I have so far, at this early stage I give it a solid 9.
