well, if we want to make this a proper argument (which would be totally against the spirit of the thread, btw), how exactly to you quantify "best"?

what exactly is the reasoning behind your statement that futbol is not the best sport ever? which sport would you call the best then and why?

I've had this discussion with the late (in the sense that she is now banned) Terez when she went on a rant against team sports, and I pointed out how playing futbol in a new school allowed me to both fit in and overcome health problems (I was an asthmatic kid, and while playing I would get into the game so much that I would literally overcome it --it was the only time I could run without feeling like dying after 5 minutes), and I will remain forever grateful to the sport for that. it DID make a real difference in my life. Precisely because it was simple, required no special skills/training, and was nonetheless able to completely captivate me.

compared to other fairly "simpe" sports like basketball or volleyball (off the top of my head, simple team sports that are played worldwide), futbol still requires the least prior skill/trainign to play and enjoy. Hence I stand by my argument that it is the "best" sport.

If the criteria is simplicity as in anyone can do it, then running (marathons or track) should be the "best" sport. You dont need ANY equipment, or even other people.

Well, as long as changing the name is vogue, I recommend we refer to Rugby as

"Grabass"

.

...and it sucks.

A new Challenger Appears!

You can get Tackled anywhere at anytime, once you do you have to get right back up and keep going quicker than with a Rugby tackle. The field is twice as large as a Rugby/NFL field as well.

Well there is no Offside, and no out.

The goal is to Kick the ball between the two main goalposts (6points). Between The other two to the side of the main ones will get you one point.

There are four quarters of 20 minutes each, though time only counts when the ball is in play (unlike NFL). 18 players on the field at a time only, so 9 per side.

If you mark the ball, catch on the full from a kick, you get a 'free kick'. hence the really big jumps to catch (mark) the ball for a kick sometimes. Though apart from that the ball is fair go to be got by any player at anytime and tackles can be done in almost anyway as well, with the play not stopping as the tackled player must give the ball up immediately or get penalised.

Its a rather free flowing game really, way more so than NFL, a fair bit more so than Rugby and about the same as Soccer I dare say. Just as much running around as in soccer too (which does more than NFL and Rugby) except AFL also has tackles in it too.

Yeah Aussie Rules is pretty mental. They do an amazing amount of running, and at the highest level, the players are pretty big too.

Gaelic Football in ireland used to be a really free flowing game, but as they have become super fit in recent years, the game has become too stop-start with all the constant niggly fouls. Which is why the compromise rules series between Aussie Rules and Gaelic Football is quite entertaining since it tried to marry the free flowing nature of one game with the greater ball-skills of the other.

The used to put it on ESPN in the 80's and 90's at like 1 in the morning but, alas, no more. I used to stay up late when i was in grade school to watch it. I wish they'd put it back on.

@ Frook
I think they might show it on Sky Sports occasionally in the UK. I remember seeing it on tv when I was still in Ireland and i think it was on SKY?
