Duiker Confusion. It's a spoiler if you've been reading with your eyes wide shut

I'm confused about Duiker.
I've been confused about Duiker since he was spiked at the end of Deadhouse Gates. I thought he died. And I never stopped to question it since it seemed just a little ambiguous, and the end, and was tied into the coltain's dogs storyline a little bit.
In House of Chains he's talked about as being "seen as the last guy thru the gates" paraphrasing of course.
And then he turns up alive in Darujistan.
And then I read a comment in a post about Baruk in relation to Duiker having played a role in saving his soul in a thread, so I gotta stop there and wonder. What on earth did I miss?
Help me out here.

There was a charm made, the necklace that Duiker wears, that came with the TTG supplies. It was intended to preserve Coltaine's soul if he were to die. However, Coltaine knew the birds would come for him, so he gave it to Duiker, who was saved instead. It was evidently Baruk's charmed necklace that was intended for Coltaine and ended up going to Duiker in DG.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Coltaine was given a vial that would resurrect him, or something along those lines. Coltaine refused that because the crows bring his spirit back, so he gave the vial to Duiker. Duiker when spiked got some resurrection all up in the house and BOOM, winds up chilling at the bar with the ex-Bridgeburners.

Good Very Good.
But how could he have been seen as the last guy walking thru the city's gate? Citation found deep in House of Chains?
What was the timeline?
This is what I remember. And this was from a read years ago... which is funny, because Erikson relies on his characters also having a shakey memory... eh?
1. He sent the children thru the city gates with the young Wickan boy.
2. He went back into the fight.
3. He died.
4. He was staked.
5. A couple Malazans, picked up the Dog.
6. While picking up the Dog, they saw the last man on the ... whatever they call the avenue they spiked them on. Was Duiker.
Now, I don't remember if they saw it was Duiker? Or simply acknowledged him as the last Soldier in the line.
So, I MUST assume that Duiker was NOT the last person thru the city gates, and that he was in fact resurected, the mechanics of which I missed completely and will joyfully re-read Deadhouse Gates.
Thank you.

The "last man through the gates" means the last member of Coltain's Chain of Dogs that survived and made it into Aren. None of the people who left to confront Korbolo Dom survived (other than Duiker, who was picked up by I can't remember who) to come back into the city.

They were looking for Duiker, since the soldiers said they were looking for a friend.
But I can't remember if they found him, I think not. I believe there was an empty post but my copies of the books are at home and I can't access them.

Right, they were looking for him...
But In The House of Chains a Malazan Soldier who was at Aren said, they SAW Duiker walk through the Gates of Aren, and that he was the last on the Chain of Dogs.
Thats what doesn't jive for me. A First person account of a man who had just died, walking into Aren.
Cause I'm agreed with you guys. He Died. How long did it take to resurect him? When did it happen? Did the guys looking for him, find him? darn. I can't remember.
So, I'm leaving this down to the character having it wrong, that it wasn't Duiker.
I'm not revisiting this post till I re-read the book.
Thanks guys.

That is because Duiker does go into Aren, while Coltaine and the remaining Wickans did some rearguard action.
After that the commander of the Aren garrision is tricked into going out to fight, Duiker is forced to go with them. They surrender and are killed.
What you are referring to, I believe, is the first time that Duiker goes into the city. Since once he "dies" he reappears elsewhere.

Agree with above. As the last stragglers from the chain enter Aren, Duiker waits on his horse, knowing Coltaine is still out there fighting.
Only when the very last of the civilians from the chain of dogs passes the gates, does Duiker follow them. That is what is seen from the walls, and reported later. This happens just before Coltaine is killed.
When the soldiers go out to confront Korbolo, and get betrayed, Duiker is killed with them, but is left til last. That's where he is when Stormy, Truth and Gesler find him; Gesler lies to Truth, and says it's not him after checking.
It's only when they've left that the TTG turn up and collect the amulet with Duikers soul in it, and his body, to return to Daru.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Yeah. Coltaine gave Duiker command of the refugees and Temul. He made sure they all got in to Aren before he himself went in. Mallick Rel persuaded that idiot high fist to go out to Korbolo. They all surrendered, got killed and so on. When Duiker was staked, he eventually got found by two of Baruk's demons. They saw the glass vial which is what they were sent for, but they didn't really gather that the one they were after was actually Coltaine. They got Duiker somehow back to Darujhistan and then at the very end of Memories of Ice, we see him sitting in K'rul's bar with the remaining Bridgeburners about to tell them the story of Coltaine. Then we don't see him again until Toll the Hounds.

It's a pity Dassem didn't stick around...he might have met Duiker. Would have done that miserable old man some good.

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

I thought the vial that was to save Colataine and that ended up with Duiker came from Quick Ben. I do not remember the demons coming to get Duiker who they thought was Coltaine. Was that in Deadhouse Gates? I wouldn't mind rereading that scene. I try not to reread Deadhouse Gates too much because its so depressing.

Yeah, it was in DG. The "demons" are actually bhokarala, and they find Duiker dead on a tree I THINK near the end of the book. And you're right, I do think Quick Ben had something to do with the magic vial, but I can't remember for sure.

Quick organized the TTG rations that were delivered to the Chain, it arrived with that.

As far as I know it was QB who made the vial for Coltaine, why would Baruk care one writ about a fist from an empire that tried to take his beloved city? I found it pretty clear that it must be QB since he know Coltaine is oldschool and tough enough to stand up to laseen.

Good point man...
It was QB, Karpolan Demesand said the soul-thingy was fashioned by "an alarmingly mysterious mage amongst the BB's." Has to be him.

I seem to recall QB created the magic vial.
