ok i am on my second reading of the series right now cause i am haveing trouble getting my hands on a copy of toll the hounds. (i live in poland) any how, i am noticing lots of things on my second time through i missed the first time, namely the following passage by kalam on page 415, after buying the new long knives from the vender. "you damn fool , cotillion. you were there at the last chaining, weren't you. you should have stuck a knife in the bastard right there and then". ok what the duece. i was under the impressiopn that cotillion was dancer, who was a mortal, and only ascended to god hood 10 years before, not the thousands and thousands of years ago, when the CG was brought down in the first place. any clairification would be great thanks.

There have been at least three Chainings that we know off. The first original one, a later one, and one roughly 40-60 years before the books. It is that last that Cotillion takes part in, as Dancer in fact, iirc.
And as for Cotillion's actual real age, i'd put him at about 110+ years old.

Dancer helped Kellenvad rule the empire for 90+ years (NoK) and would have been at least 20 if not older when they first took control of malaz island and created the empire. But of course the had been in the deadhouse at least once before the events of NoK and had been investigating old magics so who knows (and how does time pass in warrens).

The Crimson Guards vow is about a hundred years old. Before they took Quon Tali and ousted the prince and the guard, they also had to defeat Mok, secure Malaz Island and carve out their pirate empire.
The Dead house and their research in the azaths and warrens gave them a great longevity. I'm guessing that by the time Dancer ascended he was around a hundred and fifty years old. But he could be older, much older. There's just nothing to suggest that he was anything but a mortal assassin mage that became the co-god of shadow.
About the last chaining. Most likely it took place something between 11-15 years before GotM since it was just before Surly becoming empress that the schism between Hood and Dassem must have occured.
