I have been misleading you

An old acquiantance recently got in touch with me via the magic of the internet. We have exchanged a few emails and today, after a brief email silence, I just received this:
----------------------------------------
Subject: Apologies
"I am really sorry Liz, but I have been misleading you"
----------------------------------------
That's it!! How infuriating. Things suddenly get interesting and I am left without details.
You guys need to fill them in for me while I await the next installment...if there is one!

sorry Frook, the truth is out there.

Hmmmm... maybe he thinks that you think that his messages are some form of romantic gesture...?
Or, he is an alien.
Or, he is an alien.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Weird. That's the kind of thing that only makes sense if the guy was flirting with you or something.

Yep, was thinking the same.
If I would say that to a girl It'd basically mean "sry, but i'm actually incredibly in love with you and I can no longer act as if I'm 'just' a friend. So basically what I'm trying to do now, in a weird and unsure mannor, is to check whether you like me in that specific way too"
Then again, I usually am a complete disaster concerning flirting and stuff

There has been no flirting that I have picked up on. There was way back in the distant past, but nothing ever remotely happened. We have only been discussing his recent bicycle accident, my stay in the US, a brief catchup on the last 10 years and the tv show "Columbo"!
I'm dying for the next email! It could be hilariously awkward!!

LOL! I can see why!
He thinks he's leading her on... that's what my money is on.
Edit for Columbo:

Liz, I really wanted to tell you this for a long time... but I fucking hate Columbo. It's horrible, and I can no longer be friends with someone who enjoys it as much as you. Plus, I'm an alien.

Well maybe he has had a thing for you the past ten years and didn't just accidently get in touch with you but was hoping to start something up. The whole relationship, flirting or crush thing would be the only aspect that would make sense to me. Unless he lied to you about his life while you guys were catching up. Maybe he tried to make it seem better than it really is. I have no clue what else it could be, horrible way to leave you hanging! Who just makes a statement like that with no explanation?!

It's obvious. He never really had a bicycle accident, and he faked it, so he would seem like a human, as opposed to the brain-sucking alien he really is.
Alternatively, as said above he thinks he was flirting with you. Apparently, men are much more likely to misinterpret simple friendliness as flirting.
Another possibility is he's not really your mate, and is someone else pretending to be him, which might be a little unnerving.
My bet, blame Brood.

I'm hoping for something like "I'm married and we can never speak again".
I hardly knew the guy then, let alone now. He is only human though I suppose (unless HD is right!), who could blame him for being smitten.....
This could get uncomfortable!
My response was "This sounds exciting, what have you been up to?"
What level of responsibility should you take when someone who is a bit daft in the head gets in touch over the internet?
EDIT: @ Lish - Oh no, what if it is someone on a wind up.....?! Now I'm trying to think if I emailed anything incriminating!!! Curse me and my obsession with keeping my inbox tidy and going on deletion binges.

Maccy's right! It's not your fault if this guy is some lying nut job! I would just ignore him after this, he does sound a little weird! Hopefully you're right and he'll say he has to cut off all contact with you! He'd definitely be doing you a favour!

He thinks he is flirting, and is in a relationship while he is theoretically doing so. He feels awful about it, and has to tell you the truth.
You should respond with: "You are part of the Rebel Alliance, and a traitor!" Or: "Nobody puts Mezla in a corner. Nobody."

If it is, I doubt he would have admitted it.Its just the worst case scenario. Unless you have a stalker.
Your next reponse should be "I've been misleading you too. I had a sex change a few years ago, but it was botched. But anyway! Would you like to meet up? I'll wear my mankini."
Or "I AM FROOKENHAUER!"

It is your duty as an internet superhero to humiliate them for the lulz, ofc.
If he keeps getting weird, tell him you have to change your email, and give him a fake one or something.

I'm suspecting some kind of Secret Garden thing, where this is actually Mezla's split-personality trying to break through. Sooner or later, she'll realise that SHE WAS THE ONE WHO LEFT THE TOILET SEAT UP, AFTER ALL.
Don't fuck with the Culture.
