Well then!

Taking a Breath, and what you do when you Breathe, sound the same. Since it is a riddle, adding an E to the word and then thinking about the sound those two words make when done makes sense to me!

Right, well here's a riddle then (it's similar to one I've posted before, but not the same one, and it probably a bit easier):

You have 1000 pirates, who are all extremely greedy, heartless, and perfectly rational. They're also aware that all the other pirates share these characteristics. They're all ranked by the order in which they joined the group, from pirate one down to a thousand.

They've stumbled across a huge horde of treasure, and they have to decide how to split it up. Every day they will vote to either kill the lowest ranking pirate, or split the treasure up evenly among the surviving pirates. If 50% or more of them vote to split it, the treasure gets split. Otherwise, they kill the lowest ranking pirate and repeat the process until half or more of the pirates decide to split the treasure.

The question, of course, is at what point will the treasure be split, and what will the precise vote be?

Yeah, but they're also greedy. Each seeks to maximise their own share. So why would all the pirates agree to split it straight away when they could kill off some of the pirates and leave themselves with larger shares?

Damn math. Okay, so I figure they're gonna split it when there are 512 pirates left. This is how I figure.

When there are only two pirates left, pirate number 2 will outvote number 1 and they will split the booty.
When there are 3 pirates, pirate number 3 will vote to split but pirate number 2 and number 1 will see step number 1 coming and will thus kill pirate numeber 3.
When there are 4 pirates, pirate number 4 will vote to split, so will pirate number 3 since number 3 sees step number 2 coming.
When there are 5 pirates, pirate number 5 will vote to split yet pirates number 1 to 4 will vote against to maximize their individual shares.
When there are 8 pirates, pirates number 5 to 8 will vote to split since they see step number 4 coming.
When there are 16 pirates, pirates number 9 to 16 will vote to split since they otherwise die.

Keep it going in powers of 2 etc etc. Since the largest power of 2 less than 1000 is 512, 488 pirates die.

I'm out of personal riddles, and I can't be assed googling them, so someone do one. Nice on though STD, I'm keeping that one. Pain in my fucking ass to figure out though aye.
