And lots of bullets spraying wildly from those big, phallic looking guns...
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. You can't blame the actors for weapons being phallic looking.
And, I'll just say this: We see what we are looking for and it is all psychological.

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

There's a certain amount of truth to that, but it extends to not seeing the obvious because you are actively in denial that it might possibly be there.
@ SM: Cheers to a man who is comfortable enough with his own sexuality to recognize subtext as it relates to Gayness.

That's a common delusion, that things that are meaningless have meaning, but it's usually the religious that are most prone to it.

I'm comfortable enough with my heterosexuality to go with gay male friends to a gay bar so that I can pick up women there. I don't think I really have any comfortableness issues to deal with.
Next thing you'll tell me is that Bert and Ernie were gay.
If I weren't like Colbert and colorblind, my world would be black and white. Shades of gray only make things complicated.

Like I said, it's the kind of thing that get me accused of seeing subtext everywhere. Admittedly, subtext is everywhere; whether you can, or want to, see it or not. Serves me right for having read far too much film theory, and in particular feminist deconstructions of film, at an impressionable age, I guess.

No, they were into bestiality with Cookie Monster and necrophilia with the Count.

Unfortunately, I don't have to think for a living, so all my thinking is done for purely recreational purposes...
I like movies that make me think and ones that don't. If you know where and how to look you can always get more from a movie than simply what's up there on the screen. As with any form of entertainment, really.
So, occasionally, I enjoy completely overthinking things that shouldn't require any thought at all and really don't deserve it...

Like fantasy book discussion, eh?
I admit I haven't gotten into Malazan discussion much, but I have obsessed over WoT discussion for 4 years now. And I have argued heatedly over some of the most subtle subtext imaginable.
EDIT: And no, I don't think there is any gayness subtext in WoT. It's just not there - RJ didn't put it there. But it is most undeniably there in DBZ.
