Hi all :)

First off, Ups to EC for unintentionally making me a character in his book :)

I'm not sure if I missed something (even thought I have read these books more times than I have nipple hairs I miss more than I would expect) but have we been told how/ why Topper has gone crazy?
If we haven't some speculations would be appreciated.

My assumption is that his madness was caused by the length of time he has spent waiting in the Imperial Warren. It's a pretty bleak place and he's been hiding for a number of years ready to carry out Laseen's plan. No company, nothing good on the telly, it's enough to turn anyone into a fruitloop

Taking Hinter's point one further, the Imperial Warren is the ruins of an entire continent where a population of millions were reduced to ash by that nice fellow Kallor (see MoI). Plus there seems to be a whole lot of wierd and strange shifting with other warrens and various dangerous things passing through, and, just for good measure, time and space are fncked and affected by a person'smind set (see Kalam's passage with Minala and Keneb's family in HoC).

And then, on top of spending a year or so, alone, frolicking amidst the time/space skewed remains of a million corpses, as part of Laseen's plan, Topper is expected to kill. Everyone. Who passes though, whether they were friends, allies or otherwise, to maintain the fiction that the Imperial Warren had become impassable in order to deny Rel's Black Glove use of it.

Not a happy time.

From what we saw of Topper back in GotM and DG, he's a fairly sociable type and was once one of Laseen's trusted few, so unlike a lone wolf type, that long in that place only ever meeting people to kill them just wouldn't be good for the thinkymeatz.

- Abyss, wrote exams that felt like that.

Amazing that he spent all that time, going craaaaaaaaaaaazier than usual as you said, and was still ready to aid Laseen. Loyal bastard.
Suck it Errant!

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

he also had a personal grudge against Cowl and he knew if he played his part he was likely to get his shot.
Which he did.
And was awesome.

- Abyss, says Cowl went out like a punk.

I think we haven't seen the last of Cowl, he seemed to (in his own slightly insane way) have a plan.

I'll just chuck this quick OT question in here rather than starting a new thread:

In Gotm the TA assasin mage Serrat is about to take out Crokus and Apsalar in K'Ruls belfry when she gets mugged by someone warning her off "Compliments of the Prince". Was that Cowl?
