Well, that's JA through. I'll vote on the other two in a while, once I've reread them.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

OK, voting on the last two:
drinksinbars versus cause, battle of the lower case when did you change it to a capital C, Cause? Ruined the terrible line
Despite the inherent bias I had against dibs, because of how tempting a dibs/Morgoth fight would be and trying not to let that affect my judgement here, I'm afraid Cause's stuff, while a pretty cool and occasionally funny background piece on the Deathmatch itself, didn't really show anything about his character. He's a war veteran. He has a wife. Thaaaaaaaat's about it. Sorry man, but I didn't enjoy it. So, dibs it is.
temp versusCaptain 'Ooh, I might have to fight someone who isn't serious, wah wah WAH' Grief
temp's first post was a little weak, but had a pretty entertaining second half, and I did enjoy the ending line a lot. Grief's character was a lifesucking (if complainy) badass in his first piece, and spent the entirety of his second post in a prolonged feint and faint. This one is actually pretty difficult, as I much as I liked temp's second post and Grief's first post, only Ambir seems like a character who could grow later on, with the magically disappearing lifesucking looking usable. As nifty as Ariel was, there's only so much you can do with an inner city chemistry teacher lost in the past. Either way, I'm going to go with Grief. And I'm going to kick his character in the balls.

temp v Grief (Grief)
This was a really tough one to call. I really enjoy Grief's writing style - it is nicely florid, but not to the point of obfuscating the action he's trying to describe. Really draws the reader in. While temp's writing was not quite as ornate or engaging, he had some innovative ideas (I liked that wasp) and executed them very well. In the end though, the strength of Grief's writing that wins him my vote.

ok, reading the entries and commenting as I go along
Illy vs Mez
Both of you had superb ideas, and I really enjoyed readin this fight. Mezla's backstory was really really funny, while Illy just kept pooring on the exxaggerated pathos of the shrimp.
Fight-wise, I do feel that Illy dedicated more time to the actual match, as compared to Mezla. And I gotta admit, I do love Illy's "so absurd it becomes serious, but then goes too far and becomes absurd again" style.
so, my vote goes to Illy.
DiBs vs Cause.
Once again, both characters were interesting, but it felt like Cause really didn't do much in his first post. I have no problem with his second post--the description of the fight was short, but to the point. However, I feel that hos opening post featured the Deathmath setting too much, and didn't really do much for his character.
as such, I'm going to vote DiBs.
JA vs Tapper
This was one of the best matchups in round 1, I think.
both players handled their character, as well as their opponents really well.
However, I feel that I gotta give Tapper points for originality, since, despite his awesomeness, all of us (except Mezla) know who Duke Nukem is and what he's capable for. troule in a Trenchcoat on the other hand, still has a lot room for growth.
so in this match, my vote goes to Tapper.
bauchelain the Evil vs Morgoth
another well-written fight. Good interaction among the two fighters from both authors, the fighting was short, brutal and nasty.
I think Morgoth was stronger when it came to character building--BtE really didn't give us any details as to what Shade was aside from a magick-wielding super-assassin. Also, i'm not quite sure, but it seems like BtE ended his last post with his character's death.
anyhow, i'm voting Morgoth in this one.
D'rek vs Sir Thursday.
Another great fight. Both authors really managed to play off each other's posts well, making it one of the most fluid fights ( the only one that came close was JA vs Tapper). Lippmer was a great character and D'rek writing was solid and had a good pace. Same can be said about ST--his PoV writing was really impressive, and he took cues from D'rek's writing and continued it really well.
think this is the toughest fight to call, actually. But I am very intrigued by ST's character, so my vote will have to go to him, though I foresee this as a really difficult battle for myself.
Temp vs Grief
an interesting fight, to be sure. Temp's Ariel was al-bisiness, and the entire fight was just cataloguing hitss and damage. While it's nice and concise, it felt like Ariel was very 2-dimesional, she didn't really seem to have much depth to her. Grief's Ambir was well-written, andGrief has me curios as to where he's gonna go with his character.
so I vote for Grief.
Shin vs Alt.
Another really close call.
Alt's Chanfar seems like a pretty awesome badass, and once agin, both writers managed to make their posts flow really well. Shin's character got tons of atmosphere, and lots of room for growth.
This appears to become a pattern.. but i'm a sucker for those fighters that appear to show promise of greater things to come.
vote goes to Shin.

Holy shit, I'm through
Didn't expect that, specially against Tapper.
I hear you all about the problem of Duke being an existing character.
However, to my defense, when I started to write my entry, the only ones that were posted were dibs' Morgoth, and Yellow's Emilio Estevez, so I thought is was kinda of a "Celebrity Deathmatch" or whatever that claymation thingy was called.
Anyways, I officially give Morgoth the first post if he still wants it.
Didn't expect that, specially against Tapper.

Cheers to JA, well fought!
I'll try to expand on the whole LUV thing for the death scene... hmm, methinks a Barry White cameo is in order.
And then, some tough decisions for the fights I still have to vote on. This afternoon, hopefully.

Ok, here's my votes for the last two fights.
DiBs vs Cause: DiBs
I think DiB's writing was a bit better. Maybe it's just me, but cause's grammatical structure bugged me a little. That and like has been said before, the two posts revealed very little about his character, whereas DiBs managed to describe the possession of Martin by Morgoth quite well. So DiBs.
Temp vs Grief: Grief
All the scenes were pretty cool, but the fight in Grief's final post clinched it for me. In addition, Grief's character seems to have more potential for growth, so the vote goes to Grief.

STD vs Drek
Hard to decide. Both interesting, both a touch silly, both well done. Drek had a challenge in that STDs character is essentially indestructable yet I cant help but feel that swiping at the sandstorm with a breastplate for a few hours was a bit ridiculous. Still what could he do. As has been said before both of you did very well in working off each others posts. However Im going to give my vote to STD because I just felt his characterizition and writing were excellent.

Temp vs Grief
Though I enjoyed both players' writing, I felt Grief's last post won the day. It really made me interested in the character and opened for the kind of development I tend to like. So, grief it is.
DiBs vs Cause
This here is hard, mainly I guess because I'm worried about being influenced by DiBs using me as his character. DiBs writing is strong, and his technical grasp is very good. I particularly like the distinction between Morgoth and Martin and how they sort of flow together. There were some hiccups but all in all I was impressed. Cause also wrote with a strong prose and used an original approach to the DM, which I liked a lot. Also his writing was easier to follow than DiBs', whom a couple of times got a bit cluttered. Still though, I just didn't get the feel of Cause's character, which sadly is a big part of the DM for me. The character is the heart of the match and without development there it gets difficult to feel interested in how he will progress. So, DiBs gets my vote here.

temp vs grief
Bloody hell that was some ending
really good fight, pretty brutal stuff. Both players ahd a great second post, and temp was able to show off a lot of his characters abilities with great flair. Grief though i felt had a better writing style, his work seemed to flow really well and the descriptions were all very strong.
Gotta give it to grief, though it was very close.

Ok, here are my votes on the last 2.
Dibs vs Cause: Dibs. Excellent job Cause, I just think you had the misfortune of drawing a first rounder with the Deathmatch buzzsaw known as drinksinbars. The character intrigue is strong for both characters. The route Cause took with his writing was original, but Dibs just draws such a solid picture of both action and character motivation that its hard to deny the strength of his style.
Grief vs. Temp: Grief. Both of you need to submit works to the short story contest. Excellent fight, I felt like I was there watching it take place in person. I find myself just so intrigued with where Grief's character is going though, that I have to give the vote that way. Hard one to decide!

Yep, that was the idea - I can do the first post in our fight if you like, so you know how the party stands when you come to face them. I was planning on Team Sandstorm putting up a slightly more unified front this time...
