The MBOTF scene that made you gasp, then pause the longest.

We've discussed funniest characters, characters we most want to see, favourite scenes and a plethora of others. I was wondering which scene still makes you think, "Whoah. Holy Excrement!" The scene that made you stop reading and pause.
For me this scene was Whiskeyjack's fight with Kallor. When that leg snapped I got cold took a long pull on a Guinness and went out for a smoke. Mallet's reaction gave me goose bumps. (I put this in the HOC forum simply from the fact, that I thought we'd poll the series)
I look forward to hearing from others.

On the basis that we're not going any further than HoC here, I would have to go with this top three:
1. MoI - Moon's Spawn rising up out of the frozen waterfall.
2. GotM - The imagery of Silanah and the four draconean Andii flying in formation against Raest.
3. DG - the Butterflies at the crossing and Sorno's death.
- Abyss, gets nervous around those framed dead butterfly things now.

When coltaine died for me.
Personally I feel cheated by whiskyjacks death scene. I felt affected not because of the way he died not because of the way he wrote the scene but simply because it was whiskeyjack and he just seemed to die in the most pathetic most uniteresting way and than iktovians death just comes and overshadowed it. I wanted more from this scene

Itkovians death definately. The whole build up from the beginning of when he first appeared up until when he died. Awesome. Probably one of Eriksons best written characters in my opinion. especially with such little "screentime". Brilliant.
EDIT - Also when I re-read GotM and found out Kruppe was the Eel. Dunno how I forgot he was, but I remembered going:-
( O ) _ ( O ) "Ohhhhhhhh yeah!"

HoC - same as Jen'isand; I just couldn't believe it.
DG - the whole end of the Chain of Dogs, especially when the arrow was shot at Coltaine

MoI should have been loaded with all those moments. But the book felt so bloated, so much of it unnecessary, and the manufactured conflict sometimes so damned silly that the few moments that should have been moving...just felt flat to me.
Deadhouse Gates was loaded with them though. And most of them worked. The strained friendship, coupled with revelations, between Mappo and Icarium. Coltaine's death. When the enemy tribe came in on the side of the Malazans. Just the conversations with the soldiers sometimes were poignant and moving. Even some of the lines...
"The Deadliest weapon the world has ever seen in the Malazan soldier. Because he's allowed to think" (paraphrased).
The impaling of the 10,000, even if they took the cheapest least believable route to get there, it had to end that way and was moving. The beat up Wickan dog still scrambling on. Duiker walking into the city gates at last with the refugees. Everything.
DG is what got me hooked on Erickson. Really one of the most moving stories I've read in a long time.

ooooh, do u think they actually will? i hope so but why? any ideas?
Just take care with discussing these guys, so as not to spoil anything for readers who've only read up to HoC

Spoiler
On topic, the most powerful scene for me is still the slaughter of the soldiers of the Chain of Dogs at the walls of Aren and the killing of Coltaine, sniff. I did need a break after that...

Hello everyone, congrats on the new forum, it looks a lot better than the last i must admit
I guess its the death scenes that does it for me - especially Whiskeyjack, Itkovian and Coltaine. Those three really gave me goosebumps, tough reading, but excellent!

@Cause: Brukhalian is the Mortal Sword of the Grey Swords, who walks into a trap with his men in Capustan.

Ah, you're right - Brukhalian's death is definetely worth mentioning too. In general, I loved the way Erikson handled the Grey Swords.
