Anyway, would those who've seen it say this episode is the Moffman at his finest? Because that's pretty much doctor who at it's finest IMO.

Which leads me to ask: who are your best (and worst) doctor who writers?

I don't really pay attention to the writers, tbh.

But yeah there have been lots of really outstanding episodes. Moreso frankly than the original run. Plus they have a lot better mix of episodic and series plotlines, which keeps it very interesting.

Lots of the Tennant episodes were great. Blink, which I think is just about everyone's favorite Dr Who episode of all time. The John Simm Master storyline. The Rose-Tennant unspoken-love storyline - of course that was as much the acting as the writing.

Indeed, the acting was so good during the Tennant years it's hard to pinpoint episodes good purely for the writing.

Moffat is clearly my fave (even during RTD's tenure with Blink, Girl in the fireplace, Silence in the Library ect.), and I also thought that when RTD did creepy right he did it amazingly right (MIDNIGHT), even though his palette was usually overly garish. His ending two-parters for series 2 (Army Of Ghosts & Doomsday) and series 3 (The Sound Of Drums & Last of the Timelords) were entirely awesome and some of my fave eps. Chris Chibnall does a fair deal of good eps, as does Toby Whithouse (if bleak). That's about it for faves.

I specifically DON'T like Helen Raynor's written eps (Daleks in Manhattan two-parter from series 3 and the Sontaran ones from Series 4)

Fair enough. I find my enjoyment of an episode generally depends a lot on who wrote it. Some writers are fantastic, others I just can't stand. A few like RTD can go either way.

RTD could be epic or disappointing. Garish is the right word for some of his episodes.

Chris Chibnall.. he did the Silurian eps right? What else?

I liked Toby's School Reunion, but not his Vamps of Venice so much.

Aside from Moffat and RTD on form, I like Paul Cornell: Father's Day and Human Nature/Family of Blood

Cringe-worthy stuff like that makes me embarrassed to be a doctor who fan. Luckily we have blink, silence in the library, family of blood and such to counter-act it.

three: blink

Moffat also wrote the 2 parter in season 1 , The Empty Child/The Doctor dances, which was very good.

And QT, i also agree with you on the Helen Raynor eps, cos that Daleks in Manhattan 2-parter was awful.

I quite enjoyed the 2 parter by Matt Jones called, The Impossible Planet/the Satan Pit which was really creepy.

And Paul Cornell has actually done a few which were well done. Again, a 2-parter called Human Nature/Family of Blood (which incidently had the actor playing Viserys in Game of Thrones playing a baddie).

I'm delighted that Moffat is the showrunner now, cos i think he has a good feel for the balance of creepy/funny.

On a separate note (though maybe it is related?), I have had this nagging feeling for most of last season that River is the one who kills him. and that is her crime (or part of it) that lands her in the stormcage. I'll have to try and find the quotes, but it's the very evasive way she mentions first meeting him.

Even when Octavian talks to the Doctor he also is deliberately vague.
The Bishop Octavian specifically tells the Doctor
"She killed a man....... A hero to many"
But wouldn't say who (pun intended).

And when the Doctor askes her about it.
Doctor: "Octavian said you killed a man"
River: "Yes, I did"
Doctor: "A good man"
River: "A very good man. The best man I've ever known"

but the clip from this new episode would appear to contradict this (I did say appear).

I'm confused. But still feel i'm on the right track.

This is my exact list too...lol. My gf and I both feel that even though the Tennant END OF TIME eps were sad, WATERS OF MARS is superior for the specials.

I'd add that The sheer zany awesome of THE ELEVENTH HOUR is why its my fave from series 5....with THE BIG BANG as a close second.

I used to think it will be Rory....simply because he has the quality and time to become something great (like Mickey eventually did in Tennant's tenure)...but now I wonder if it is indeed the Doctor. It's tough to say. What would River's reasoning be? Why would she shoot a man who on every other episode with him they are good friends. The spacesuit mirrors what she wore when Ten met her in Silence in the Library...There is also the theory running around that River is actually Amy's future daughter....with the added aspect that in THE IMPOSSIBLE ASTRONAUT both Amy and River have stomach pains, Amy saying she's preggers and River having random pains at the same time. which could also bring it back to Rory if he's then River's father...that could be the BEST man she ever knew. Does she consider the Doctor that way? Probably. It's all such a vague mystery though, and I think we finally find out in ep 7....

In Impossible Astronaut, when younger Doctor arrives, he greets River with "what have you got for me this time", the exact same words he says to the Tardis in The Eleventh Hour.

River is the doctor from the future. She marries himself and has a daughter which (s)he names Amy. Amy is adopted out to the Pond family, because it's hard to save the universe while breast-feeding and changing nappies. All this happens/is revealed by the end of season 6, and the final episode is on Jeremy Kyle.

Rory is Amy's nephew by her sister, Rose Tyler, also adopted out. The final episode sees Rose's second unexpected return, after she crosses the galaxy to bitch about her parent(s)/lover(s) on Jeremy Kyle. Doctors 1 through 10 make an appearance to bitch about wtf doctors 11 and 12 were thinking. Oh and the fourth doctor doesn't make it as he is stuck in a time loop/tom baker thought it STILL hadn't been long enough not since he last played the doctor.

In a press statement RTD says that although he liked the final few episodes for their sheer emotional intensity and is pleased that Roses's second unecessary come back further dilutes the impact of Doomsday, he did not foresee the show going in this direction when he handed the reigns to Moffat.

I didn't when I first saw it, but after rewatching JOURNEY'S END many times it makes sense....otherwise Rose is left in an alternate universe WITHOUT the man she loves. That's fairly bleak. JOURNEY'S END gives her back what she is missing. Sure, it takes away the overall emotional impact of DOOMSDAY, but it rounds her out quite nicely as a character.

Also, am I the only one who would shit goats of awesome bacon and steak if Rose Tyler showed up and met the 11th Doctor? Better yet if Tennant's 10 showed up and met 11?

It would be cool if she did, but... too much. She's already had two farewells. What I'd like to see is Captain Jack meeting the 11th. A meeting between 10 and 11 would be fun. Probably best nearer the end of Smith's run when he's firmly out of Tennant's shadow. And if they can't work it into the show why not do another short special like when 10 met 5?

I'm not the only one who really doesn't like the character of Rose, and felt the overwhelming focus on her detracted from the rest of the series? Cause she's one of the main reasons I stopped keeping up with the newer series. Yes yes, Mr. Davies, we know you want to roger Mrs Piper but stop writing her in every single episode and having her shadow hang over the episodes she's not even in already! It's more annoying than Milla Jovovich having superpowers that defy explanation in every movie directed by her husband regardless of backstory or plausibility!
