Patterson Joseph would be awesome! And it would continue the thread of minor bit character (Bad Wolf) in a previous season returning as the Doctor.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Agreed. He's literally top of my list of those in the running supposedly. He also has done DW Audio work for Big Finish, so he's a fan.

Kris Marhsall who also has high odds, would be fine...but I find him to be an exceedingly safe choice from an acting POV. He's fine, but nothing special. Though they could finally do the "I'm a ginger" joke with him.

Joseph has the acting chops, and I just really think he'd own the role.

Yeah, but with Joseph they could do the '*runs excitedly to a nearby mirror* "Am I finally ginger?!"' joke.

Totally. That would be brill.

Apparently they aired an interesting snippet at the end of BBC's Newsnight yesterday. It was an overview reel of all the Doctors, but the last shot was a spinning "15?" superimposed on a screenshot from the TV series Lucifer with the silhouette of Tom Ellis...

There is also a Neil Gaiman tweet from back in 2015 about the Lucifer pilot:

"I watched the LUCIFER pilot & suspect the show will become a guilty pleasure for a lot of people. Tom Ellis plays L like a sexymadbadDrWho."

[edit]Of course, the BBC might be trolling us.

Oh wait, I watched the wrong clip. That was a few months old. Yesterday's footage seems to hint at Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

I will rage if it's Waller-Bridge.

I don't want a female Doctor (for reasons I've already laid out on thread, most of which have more to do with male role models than anything else) to begin with...but would be accepting of a few female actors in the role (Olivia Colman at the top of that short list). But Waller-Bridge is only decent in her own work that she writes...and even there she can bend to annoying for me....so her as the Doctor would be like nails on a chalkboard to me.

I'm really hoping that it's Paterson Joseph or Kris Marhsall....and I even heard Luke Treadaway and Sacha Diwan mentioned, both of which I would be down with as well....and then there is the talk of Richard Aoyade...who is utterly DREAM Doctor Who casting in my books. Love him!

Richard Aoyade or Ben Wishaw or Andrew Scott for me, if we're talking dream castings.

I could see Tom Ellis being fantastic at it as well, but Lucifer is still ongoing and has another season (at least), so there's no chance it's him.

Well, there is absolutely no chance they'd miss the opportunity to make a big spectacle out of it. Especially since the viewing figures for last season have been appalling (by the numbers on wikipedia, Capaldi's last two seasons have dropped by nearly two million on average). I'm pretty sure this is why they specifically chose to lead into it directly from the Wimbledon final.

I think it might also be why they don't pick a woman this time (although, heck, you could just as easily argue that this is why they should do it now.

And
Spoiler
has come out of nowhere overnight to lead the betting odds, which also happened with Capaldi and Smith just before their announcements, so there's that.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

She's a solid actress (BROADCHURCH), and it makes a little sense that Chibnall (who I assume made the choice) chose from his roster of actors in his previous show for running DW, and if it couldn't be Olivia Colman, then Whittaker is fine.

That said, I'm dissapointed that they (whether it was the BBC themselves or Chibnall; I'm going to assume it's the Beeb actually who made the man/woman call) gave into the pressure from the vocal minority about making the Doctor a woman this time...because I'm not at all sure how this is going to go.

This choice is going to be REALLY unpopular with a fair chunk of the fanbase...be they full on sexist "I don't want a woman" fans, or more casual people like me and my wife who just think the one big male hero role model who doesn't use his fists or guns should stay as such (I've never been a fan of gender flipping characters...just becuase you can)...and also those who I think (like my wife) enjoyed "dreaming" after the Doctor...especially when he was Tennant and Smith. She's PISSED today and is threatening a boycott as a result of the choice.

I won't boycott. I'm willing to give Whittaker a shot. I think she's a fine actress. I just REALLY worry what this might do to the ratings on an already flagging show in the last few seasons (thanks not to Capaldi who was awesome...but Moffat who produced lackluster seasons) when the amount of people who don't like this decision come down on wether they watch or stop watching. Chibnall is going to have to bring his absolute A writing/showrunning game, and Whittaker has a VERY uphill battle ahead of her. Hopefully they achieve it.

TL;DR I'm okay with this choice (mainly down to liking the actress herself) but it's FAR, far from what I wanted...and I worry that a significant portion of the fanbase is going to rail against this (whatever their reasons)...and that might affect the show from a production standpoint.

Oh, and the amount of smug assholes on twitter doing the equivalent of a childish "Nyah nyah!" about the choice...charming.

Still not a ginger. :apt2:

Truth to be told, don't know her. I have seen some Broadchurch, but that has been a while.

Like Gorefest said, time will tell.

If Doctor Who can't survive because it has a female Doctor, then frankly I'd rather the show die. It's the same thing with the Star Trek folk pissed at the female Captain and XO. Of all the shows where it shouldn't matter, this is near the top of the list.

Then again, I stopped watching somewhere in Smith's run so what do I know?

But seriously, if people can't take a female Doctor (pretty sure he implied he's been a woman before in 10's or 11's episodes) or a female Captain in Star Trek, either global warming needs to hurry the fuck up and wipe us out or Trump needs to get around to firing the nukes. Blegh.

Side note: know at least five women who dropped the show previously due to bad writing now excited/thinking about watching again due to this news. So there's that.

If they're going to make Doctor Who a woman, it's really too bad they didn't pick a red-haired woman... just so they can make the one joke when the Doctor finds a mirror of "Finally! Finally! I'm finally a ginger!" and is so excited about that it takes the Doctor another few minutes to realize "Oh, and I'm a woman, too?!" It would be the best joke in the entire franchise...

Then you should tell those five women that the casting of a female Doctor should NOT be the deciding factor in returning to a show they stopped watching due to bad writing...the writers should be that factor. The fact that they are thinking about watching again becuase of the gender of the main cast member...feels disingeniuous. It would be better if they trusted Chibnall more than Moffat, and like Whittakker's existing body of work...not that she's female.

Again, I'm not saying I'm against this personally. I like the actress. I didn't want it to be a woman, but I'll get used to it I'm sure.

I'm MUCH more interested in what Chibnall is ready to bring to the table to be honest. He needs to pull it out of the fire that Moffat has let it languish in for like 4 seasons now.

You've got to consider the direction change casting a female Doctor implies as a factor, QT. Also you go ahead and tell those women they're wrong, see how that goes.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.
