Saturday's ep was probably one of the more innocuous Doctor Who eps in a while. Pretty straightforward overall. Nothing great. Nothing terrible. And Bill featured minimally (which usually gets more of a pass from me as I still can't stand her). Though we STILL made the villains be the humans in play, and not the Ice Warriors themselves....which is very much in Gatiss' usual wheelhouse...but I thought he might surprise us this time. Probably his most competent script in a while....but it was nothing special.

Nice little nod to classic DW at the end though.

I'm still wondering how Missy plays into the Doctor's regeneration...and what's going on there. I'm also PATIENTLY awaiting John Simm to show up.

Also, news has it (from RTD talking out about it, and knowing) that the next Doctor has indeed been cast. I expect an announcement during the later summer. It's PROBABLY going to be Kris Marhsall...as the bookies have stopped taking bets on him...and the last time they did that was when Capaldi had been cast. Only time will tell.

So, I gather that this Alpha Centauri thing is from old Who, which I've never watched. Anyone care to give me a bit of a rundown of who/what it's supposed to be and why it's important?

Not important, just a bit of a nod to a SUPER hokey classic character from THE CURSE OF PELADON (3rd Doctor), which showcases the Ice Warriors getting off Mars and becoming a more present power in the universe.

So, as Capaldi is coming to an end, what would you say are his 'great moments'?

Matt had loads of course - his 'basically, run' speech in his first ep, the pandorica speech, the speech to the parasite, etc...

What ones rate (for you) for Capaldi?

For me, definitely the ending of Heaven Sent (how many seconds in eternity) springs to mind.

I'd throw his Zygon /War speech on his list of greats, and the one about Danny's Love for Clara in the series 8 finale. And lastly, but probably my fave...after River gives her speech about the Doctor...she turns as it dawns on her who he is, and he quietly smiles "Hello sweetie"

That moment is great taken on its own but slightly ruined by River Song's speech making no sense whatsoever given that she spent her first few appearances, the ones that made her so great, depending exactly on the Doctor doing what she says he'd never do.

That episode where Clara threw all his keys away. Or thought she did.

Capaldi was easily the best of the NuWho Doctors, unfortunately he was wasted in a lot of silly episodes. Moon dragon eggs anyone? How about some angry trees? :(

Yeah, that as the finale where he does the love speech. Easily my fave episode of his entire first season.

Yeah, that was ace. I'd been disappointed so far in Moff's final season, despite some decend bits, but if the next episode is as good as this he's (almost) bowing out with a bang.

Agreed. This is the best Moffat's been since the 50th. Just class DW across the board.

The Mondasian Cybermen are still SO CREEPY.

And seeing John Simm again? Amazeballs.

Can't wait for the finale. If he nails it, Moffat will indeed go out with a bang.

Solidly great! I expect I would have gotten more emotional if I LIKED Bill...I don't though, so even her comments to the Doctor (which would have done me in if she was Rose, or Amy, or Clara) didn't really.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED his pleading speech to the Master and Missy. "Just be Kind."....fuck that did me in. That's the most emotional we've ever seen Capaldi get, and it was lovely. I also loves that Simm's response was "I wasn't listening, Tata!" And yet you could TELL Missy was affected.

Also

Spoiler

A fitting ep with an absolutely CRACKER cliffhanger for the Xmas special and Capaldi's swan song!

Well done Moffat. Well done indeed sir!

Updated with the "Just Kind" speech typed out. I think Capaldi's done some cracker speeches in his 3 years, but there is something about this one that rings the bells for the REASON I watch Doctor Who to begin with.

“I’m not trying to win. I’m not doing this because I want to beat someone, because I hate someone, or because I want to blame someone. It’s not because it’s fun. God knows it’s not because it’s easy. It’s not even because it works because it hardly ever does. I do what I do because it’s right! Because it’s decent! And above all, it’s kind! It’s just that… Just kind. If I run away today, good people will die. If I stand and fight, some of them might live. Maybe not many, maybe not for long. Hey, you know, maybe there’s no point to any of this at all. But it’s the best I can do. So I’m going to do it. And I’m going to stand here doing it until it kills me. And you’re going to die too! Some day… And how will that be? Have you thought about it? What would you die for? Who I am is where I stand. Where I stand is where I fall.”

I don't know if that was just Moffat hitting the Greatest companion hits...or a real, plot Easter egg. Could be either.

I'm reasonably sure that it was just Moffat not really thinking things through. Minor thing, though.

Anyway, I liked it, although the first part was better.

So according to the bookies, Paterson Joseph has the best odds at being Thirteen currently.

And quite frankly, that would be EXCELLENT. I have thought for years that Patterson should play the Doctor. He's got a bit of quirk about him, and can bring back the Tennant/Smith fangirls who love to crush on the Doctor back to the fold.
