ETA: Also, yeah, QT's bang on about the reasons for Smith leaving (it's his choice, they didn't let him go). The Doctor is a role that dominates a CV, and actors can find themselves struggling to get out of the shadow. Even Ecclestone did and he left after one season. Tennant doesn't appear to care because he's a massive fanboy, but it seems to factor large into the thinking of others, both new and old.

Which may be where Capaldi differs. Not only is he as big a fanboy as Tennant, but he's an actor who's already had a good long career and one properly, properly iconic role in his backlog, so he may not feel that pressure to leave. He may be around for a while. But we'll see.

I can understand this viewpoint - for the benighted foreigners of the world the visit of a Scotsman is a wondrous event, truly a noble blessing. Therefore making those visits to the furthest flung corners of our delightful globe all the more precious to the lowly natives we have deigned to visit.

So for a native of, say, North Central PA, a visit from a Scotsman would obviously be a great improvement on their humdrum workaday existence.

The TV movie suffers from a generic plot, typical 90's TV budget, and some really, REALLY bad DOCTOR WHO canon flaws (like the Doctor going to Skaro where a council of Daleks have condemned the Master and want the Doctor to take him to Gallifrey for trial...what...the...fuck?!)

But what it does do right, are the Doctor and Grace. Paul McGann is an absolute revelation and brought Eight to life SO well. I love his energy, and his very Doctor-y-ness. And Grace is a fantastic companion, accepting no bullshit and pulling her weight.

So yeah, a bad movie, but that just makes McGann's performance shine all the more!

Anyways, enjoy Eight! (He's my 2nd fave doctor after Tennant, with Smith in 3rd place)

I can't believe there hasn't been a trailer yet. They're re-running the last series somewhere or other on the BBC now (it's shuffling along on the i-player, anyway) and have most recently shown The Crimson Horror, so maybe they'll release a trailer after the end of The Name of the Doctor in said repeat. It wpuld seem odd, but they did it with Sherlock, airing the teaser after the last episode of a repeat a couple of months back.

Yeah, I've been very vocal on the lack of a trailer.

It's baffling that we are now less than 2 months out and have seen NOTHING.

I actually expected it later the same week the poster debuted.

I've noted that it's a severe marketing fail at this point. We should have seen a trailer in the late summer.....the 50th was finished shooting in March I think. Post-prod at a BROAD stretch should have been completed in mid-summer.

I think the thing about 'marketing fail' is that although the importance of overseas audiences is growing in terms of Doctor Who production, by far the greatest importance is still attached to the home, UK viewers at the moment, and there, the marketing does itself. The lack of a trailer simply doesn't matter in terms of getting attention, the 50th anniversary will be front page of every TV magazine and a major story in every newspaper in the weeks and days leading up to it. It'll be the most covered event since the royal baby.

But I'm still not sure why that's a reason not to release a trailer, it just means they don't really have to.


Apparently there was one that screened at the SDCC, but the BBC is sticking to their word that this was 'exclusive'. So no joy for us.

Okay, so during the premiere of BBC's ATLANTIS tonight (basically the replacement show for MERLIN, that is done by the folks behind MERLIN and MISFITS) there will be "stings" for the 50th...and in the same article they mention they have assembled a "specially written" trailer.

So, good news?

Could the specially written bit have anything to do with the fact that McCoy (Seven), Davison (Five), and Baker (Six) were recently seen shooting SOMETHING at the BBC?
