In fairness, Doctor Who has had no compunction about bringing back actors who have already been in it, though they've not yet done it with the Doctor himself. Bill Bailey has also appeared. Other previously-appearing actors who I think would work as the Doctor are Peter Capaldi and Mark Sheppard.
Actually they have brought back an actor to play the Doctor. Colin Baker was in Doctor Who before he became the Doctor (Commander Maxil in the story Arc of Infinity (1983))

How much are you betting that at the Christmas ep they "Timey Wimey" Matt Smith into Jenna Louise Coleman & she becomes the Doctor by way of having swam his timeline & knows his name. Or something.

That would be pretty ridiculous, but someone has mentioned that they'd like to see Jason Statham as the Doctor.
Suddenly the image of the Doctor over wielding his sonic screw driver as a weapon while simultaneously attempting not to lapse into action mode and punch the bad guy is very hilarious and would be worth a parody sketch but not in the actual show.

That thought occurred to me. If they're going to go the first female Doctor I'd like to see Jaime Murray in the role.

I would pay to see that. Unfortunately to see that everybody in UK would have to pay actual money for his salary.

Pushing it a bit, the whole episode of "Name of the Doctor" kinda defined her as everything other than. I'm cool with a female Doctor, but not Coleman.

Confession: After 30ish years of turning up my nose at Doctor Who...ever since Tom Baker glared back at me from the science fiction section of my local Waldenbooks, with his crazy hair and scarf, ugly mug, and magic phone booth...I will admit to being sucked into the Matt Smith episodes. Darn you Nerdist's Chris Hardwick! Darn you BBC America! Darn you to heck! I did not have time to add a show to my DVR. But I'm caught up with the dozen or so rerun episodes they showed before the season finale, so I guess it's all good. Now I just need a Dalek to add to my nerd toy shelf.

WooHoo! Peter Capaldi chosen as the Twelfth Doctor!
I'm REALLY pleased by this choice. A Bit older, and Capaldi is an unreservedly phenomenal actor.
Cannot wait to see what he brings to the role!

What he'll bring to the role?
Easy:
"Think you're hard! I'm the fucking Timelord! At least I don't look like a dildo, I've seen scarier rampant rabbits. Exterminate, my arse!"

Wonder if he'll play him like Malcolm Tucker.
I'm really glad they've gone for an older gent this time, but managed to pick one who's still a dapper chap and hopefully won't scare the Tennant/Smith fanbase off.

Uh, Doctor? You look an awful lot like that government chap who killed himself awhile back. Back when the children were all doing that alien flash mob craze thing.

He was also the Roman father on the S4 Ten and Donna ep THE FIRES OF POMPEII (which also featured a pre-companion Karen Gillan as a young priestess)....DW is nothing if not consistent with plumbing existing talent.
I think the only other time it's been a Doctor who was on the show previously, it was when Colin Baker was on during Tom Baker's tenure as a random guard, only to show up a number of seasons later as the Sixth Doctor.

I went to his imdb page. I fairly certain that Torchwood (and the fires of pomeii) I've ever seen him in.

Also his most recent role before this was in WORLD WAR Z and his name is W.H.O Doctor in the credits.
That's one HELL of a coincidence!

For bigger fans then me but why let go Smith when he's so young, enjoys, and just IMO entertaining the fuck out me and my son? I know the Dr regenerates but this is gonna throw me off and prob confuse the shit out my 6 yrs old. Why not keep Matt for a few more seasons?
Basically it's a get in, make your mark and get out before type-casting thing.
Tell your son not to worry...I've been dealing with Regenerations since I was about 5 with Tom Baker's 4th Doctor. It's all part of the show.
