1. The past Doctor sequences (inserted footage and stand-ins) with Clara were all really neat...but that minute or so of footage doesn't begin to TOUCH the STAR TREK TOS / DS9 Crossover ep (which is what a number of us were assuming it would be). I honestly thought we'd have gotten a more concerted effort to blend sequences, not just flashes and shots. It felt novel...but not really mind-blowing.
I think (and hope) that there will be more in the finale. After all, they haven't escaped from his timestream yet. And it would certainly give a more satisfying reason for 11 interacting with 10 than it being the crappy half-Doctor from the other timeline.
Quote
5. The Great Intelligence. Blerg. How toothless. The Whispermen were creepy...but what could they do? Become incorporeal and stop your heart? Meh, creepy. But the GI...tailored as the big bad since the Xmas special...enacts his plan which briefly undoes some shit for a minute or two....only to have it all undone a few seconds later by Clara. I mean, in the grand scheme of villain plans, that one was NOT thought out. Hell, a secondary Bond villain could have done a better job. Simeon/G.I.: "Okay now, I'm gonna go into this here timestream and fuck up all the Doctor's good deeds k? *pause* Oh, but since I can't CLOSE the timestream after me...nobody follow me k? Cause then I couldn't enact my brilliant...er...decent...err...lame plan, k?" Sigh. SIGH!
Agreed. This was crap. The whole 'time-traveller dying causes a wound in time' thing felt half baked, to be honest.
Quote
5. Speaking of emotional resonance. Clara sacrifices herself...is told by River that if she goes into the timestream her original self will die. Tear. Cool, I like where this is headed. ...errr...but no....the Doctor almost immediately goes to get her even though he kind of can't...
GRRR....
GRRR....
With you there, too. Would it have been too much to ask for Clara to not show up again in this episode and the next to begin with the Doctor searching for her? Then at least it'd have felt like an effort.
I did like it, overall, but as a decent individual episode; as an answer to the hype and promises that were made it was underwhelming. If there isn't more about Trenzolor and the Silence in the 50th I'm going to be raging - what happened in that episode bears no resemblance to what was prophecied by the Silence and Dorium.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Yeah, this is totally how I felt. I really enjoyed the p for what it was, and ignoring my issues with it...but yeah, it doesn't remotely answer the hype...and I DO hope that the 50th continues to deal with the fallout....which having Hurt in it, it probably will. So I have faith.
So I liked, but with some reservations.

If this season has given us nothing else, I agree that episode to episode Smith is absolutely nailing his Doctor. Even in the episodes I found tepid, he has impressed me.

I'm really not sure what to think about this. To be honest, with all the foreshadowing about Trenzalore I had hoped for something a bit less....anti-climactic. I mean, sure, John Hurt is cool as fuck and I look forward to seeing more of him, but this whole thing with the previous doctors didn't really appeal to me that much, it just seemed like it was just a gimmick for "another episode" But then again, my experience with Doctor Who started with Eccleston.
And the Big Intelligence? He really hasn't made a big enough of an impact on me for me to accept him as "The big bad" of the season. He was boring, useless, easily defeated and ultimately, in my opinion, utterly pointless.
But I guess come November we'll see where it's going.
But other than that, Smith and what'sherfaceColeman delivered.

So Matt Smith is leaving Doctor Who after the Christmas special. Boo!
Interestingly, he explains his departure with 'Trenzalore beckons' which suggests that it'll be Christmas, not the 50th, in which that is dealt with - meaning either it'll be either essentially a three-parter with those two and The Name of the Doctor, or the 50th will not be dealing with Trenzalore directly at all.

Helen Mirren
Bill Bailey

Personally I would be in favour of any of the folowing:
Benedict Cumberbatch, but between Sherlock and movies - that's not happening.
Ditto on Tom Hiddleston - too busy with film work i'd expect.
Bill Nighy - already appeared in Dr Who as the curator of the Van Gogh exhibition, sadly
Russel Tovey - also been in it already as well.....
Frankly i'm kind of stumped as to Who to get (see what I did there?)
Though considering the last casting job of a complete unknown, I'm quietly confident that Moffat will pull a decent one out the bag.

In fairness, Doctor Who has had no compunction about bringing back actors who have already been in it, though they've not yet done it with the Doctor himself. Bill Bailey has also appeared. Other previously-appearing actors who I think would work as the Doctor are Peter Capaldi and Mark Sheppard.
My personal favourite would be Idris Elba, but being on the edge of Hollywood megastardom the BBC are never going to get him in, especially since he's already in one ongoing show. Jerome Flynn is another but again, I can't see him fitting GoT and Doctor Who into one schedule.
I've seen James Callis thrown around a lot. I like that idea. But it'll probably be someone who's been around in British dramas but not yet made a major name for himself, that seems to be the pattern.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

I'd be on board with Cumberbatch, or Patterson Joseph (he's been on it tho), Hiddelston....they are also talking about Rupert Grint, Ben Daniels, and a few others...I think it will probably be someone moderately unknown.
Either way, get ready for fresh Regeneration jitters...I've been dealing with this since my first Doctor (4th, Tom Baker) regenerated into the 5th.
I want Moffat to stop showrunning though, I'll wait for that news (which apparently won't be till after Series 8 which he has already signed on for)

There's also been talk of casting Alexander Siddig (Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammed Ahmed Abdel Karim El Mahdi) on Io9. Which I approve of.
