Tonight's ep THE POWER OF THREE.
It was a slow start (which I believe was the point), and once it got going it was decent enough...BUT...I was never frightened by the cubes, nor worried that anyone of the main cast was going to get into trouble VIA them. I'm weirded out that Rory's Dad seemingly has nothing else to do but sit and watch the cube for 365 days or whatever...as that just seems...excessive...and if everyone was going to see them come alive anyways, what was the point of setting Rory's dad to that whole 20 minute plot strand where he watches one...bad writing?
And we are given the DOCTOR WHO universe version of the Inhibitors. An alien sect bent on stopping the human "plague" from spreading to the stars. Right. So question. If these Chaka creatures operate outside of time as they mention...why not bring the cube invasion in the past when humanity could do nothing about them and the subsequent the heart attacks?
I liked the Chaka guy, he was properly villainous but ends up with almost a custodial role as a hologram? Weak. Super weak even.
Now, the Ponds relationship with the Doctor explored. Um did anyone else watch this episode and think to themselves "Wow, Amy and Rory are a bit selfish?" I mean here they have freely chosen to go with the Doctor in the past in the name of adventure, but when he needs them and the like they "have their own lives and jobs" ect.? It just seemed weird to me. Again, bad writing? They acted un-Pondish in that regard.
LOVED the nod to Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. As for the inclusion of UNIT though...A. UNIT without Red beret's is NOT, I repeat NOT UNIT and B. They had the dodgiest dialogue of the whole ep, and were treated rather poorly. I digress...fanboy snarkery. (Note: Best representation of UNIT in NuWho....easily THE PLANET OF THE DEAD and Malcom!)
All in all one of the weaker eps of the series so far for me. Actually, no, it's easily THE WEAKEST this Series. It was still entertaining once it properly got going. But it never made too much sense, or avoided gaping plot holes.
Basically the first 20-25 minutes seemed like much filler.
It also wraps up fairly simply with a quick wave of the screwdriver and fixing of everyone's cardiac arrest...a little too easy.
The good stuff was Stewarts daughter, the Doctor's chat with Amy by the Thames, and Brians little speech at the end about how they should go with the Doctor. I also liked the Doctor's speech to Brian about what happened to his past companions.
Next week's ANGELS Ep should be a cracker though!
