Bradley Walsh was great.

Dr Who: "I'm an alien and I'm here."
Graham: "..... C'mon Grace, we're going."

I thought they'd done a fair bit of filming at the Park Hill flats but I think that was only the roof scenes. At least I didnt see any of the iconic (read: butt ugly) Park Hill flats or floating streets.

Nice episode all in all. Whitaker's doctor has a strong Tennant feel to it. Lots of deaths, though.

Yes, he was great, and although he's there for comic relief when they did turn on the pathos he did it superbly.

I was also rather glad not to see Park Hill flats!

My DM was telling me that apparently there was an interview Jodie Whitaker did in the US where they subtitled her due to the accent, and apparently the subtitles translated Huddersfield (where she's from) as "Hoodezfield", haha! :)

Just got done. Really enjoyed that. Very different from Moffat. Cgi of the thing actually looked good. DW has had so many laughably bad cgi since I started watching 9. This gives me hope.

Ok so is this Dr actually the 13th Dr? She said it’s been awhile since she bought women’s clothes so I didn’t know how to take that. Was she hinting that she was a woman before?

presumably referring to his wives/kids.

EDIT - and grandkids of course

That's how I took it as well.

Well that was another solid outing! Like the more straightforward storytelling thus far. Little minor “arc” tickles like the callback to the Stenza from Ep 1,and the bit about the timeless child...but otherwise, just a rip roaring old school Who on an alien planet.

LOVE the new theme, and opening credits.

And the new TARDIS interior is excellent. Basically it’s vey 9 and 10’s Coral style...just with crystals.

Looking fwd to next week!

And a custard cream dispenser.

Next week's is a brave choice- they're doing Rosa Parks.

Anyway, yeah. In full agreement that the choice of simple storytelling so far has paid off. Both stories so far have just been straightforward fun.
Also the cinematography has improved by leaps.

I also gotta say that I'm loving the inclusion of a dyspraxic character, and one clearly part-written by someone who knows what it's like to be dyspraxic.

Yes, my wife (who deals with this affliction in her job on occasion) noted that it must have been written by someone who knows it well.

Can I also comment on how much I love Bradley Walsh? Way back in the day when I was in my early 20's, I recall seeing him day after day on Corrie for a while, and thinking he was just really funny...so seeing him on DW all these years later as the sarcastic skeptic grandpa character is great! Plus, him walking around on a desolate planet with cat-eye sunglasses the Doctor got from Audrey Hepburn (Or Pythagoras) was such a funny little prop thing.

Best line of the night "You take one of your little naps..." to Epzo.

Graham's great but I am a little worried that Graham's repeated request that Ryan call him grandad ends with Ryan eventually doing so rather than with Graham accepting that Ryan can love him as family without calling him grandad which is how it should end.

Hmmm...possble. Depends on what Chibnall is angling for on that front storywise. His history on Broadchurch with "drama" tells me he won't go for the easy option, but only time will tell.

Aside from that, I feel like the other variable at play here is Ryan's refusal to "accept" Graham (even with minor help with the bike in Ep 1) as that sort of figure in his life, stems from something that Graham could neither help, nor affect. As such he unequivocally sees himself as Ryan's remaining family, and Ryan still sees him as "Graham, that dude who dated my gran"...there are lessons to be learned on both sides of the story for those characters, and I wonder if Chibnall can pull off both without making it too trite?

I'm also exited to get more Yaz family stuff as we get deeper into the season!

Oh sure, that part isn't Graham's fault at all. But at the same time the feeling isn't something Ryan can help here. I'm fairly confident that that part will be dealt with well, it's an obvious but solid character arc for both.

I do hope you're right and Chibnall surprised me with the other part. It's a small quibble really but the whole idea of a guy expecting someone who was a teenager when he came into the family to think of him as 'grandad' would be weird in real life, let alone repeatedly asking him to out loud.

Really enjoyed the second episode! I am really enjoying Jodie Whittaker. This might be a bit odd of a comparison until I explain, but she reminds me of nothing so much as Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman in her film.

It's that same faith and hope that everyone is basically good/has good in them, and a similar sort of wonder at everything new. It's really charming!

"Loving your work, boys" when they were throwing suggestions about the solar panels made me chuckle.

She really did take this role and run with it. I mean I've almost always had "regeneration jitters"...you know that wheel of "acceptance" of the new Doctor...when a new one was introduced...but not this time. Like not at all. She WAS the Doctor on ep 1 for me the moment she made that crane speech. She felt very Tennant-y too while running around in THE GHOST MONUMENT, which gave me some warm fuzzies.

Also, it's kind of weird to absolutely crush on a Doctor...(I've had a bit of a crush on Jodie since ATTACK OF THE BLOCK).

I also just wanna shout out just how good the music is at the end when she's exploring and launching the Tardis. I loved Murray Gold's work but so far Segun Akinola has been on point.

Finally watched the episode. Oh boy, we get a Call of Duty reference. Based on the setting, the threat, and the look of the weapon, Halo would have been more apropos. Just sayin'Posted Image

Enjoyed the episode overall. Not demanding or challenging in any stretch of the imagination. Just a standard A to B banger with some subtle allegories about trust and goodness (or something). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Rosa Parks episode, on the other hand, was really good. Handled what could have gone wrong in so many ways very delicately, and got both moments of real tension and real emotion out of it.

Rosa was an outstanding episode but ole white supremacy guy coming from almost 6k yrs in the future was frustrating to take in.

The conversation with Rosa and MLK was brilliant.

Caught up last night - excellent episode. I had a couple of jitters when I watched the preview last week (so many ways they could have got it wrong) but they handled it with a really beautiful light touch. Really enjoyed the last scene in the Tardis where she shows them the asteroid too. Lovely ending note.

It's taken me a while to warm to most Doctors (I may have said previously, Nine is my Doctor) but I've loved Jodie right from the off, and she keeps being brilliant. Roll on next week

Absolutely brilliant and emotional episode! Really well done. This season is really impressing me so far.

And I agree with TRB, didn’t need to warm up to Jodie, I’ve loved her since the off.

My favorite was 9, then 10, then 11, and 12 didn't overtake 11 until episode Heaven Sent.

Tell them I came the long way around.

Edit: oh, 13. We'll see.

Edit2: Clara Oswald is a Goddess, spoken with the emphasis on the sec9nd syllable instead of the first like we do in the US.

Agree with pretty much all of that, except I never warmed to 11 much. I liked 12 from the off although thought the writing was very inconsistent for him. Heaven Sent, however, is just gorgeous television start to finish.

Also perpetually fond of Clara.

Capaldi was a great Dr with a plethora of terrible scripts who persevered through.

Smith was a great Dr with a decent amount of great scripts that covered for the terrible ones.
