The Official Be-All-End-All 'Favorite Book' thread Because Forum Polls Just Aren't Good Enough!

I intend to hold the be-all-end-all rankings here, and not on the poll forum, for very good reasons. Basically, here is how it works. Since I think forum built in polls aren’t entirely accurate for this, I want you all to post your favorite novels in the series(any novellas are included, as well as anything Esslemont), and give a point value to each. Basically, rank your top FIVE favorite books, so in essence, your favorite gets 5 points, and your next gets 4, and so on. Basically, whatever book has the most points wins, and ideally, if this catches on, there won’t be a definitive winner until more people vote.

To make my life easier, it would be nice if people added their rankings to the overall total after they post their list, so I can just copy and paste it into the original post, instead of making me do the work, but I don’t mind doing it. I hope this is a success and I look forward to the discussions this will bring.

Concerning ties: NO MORE TIES! It's mathematically unfair the way we've been doing it, so really, no more ties.

OK, here are my rankings:

1. Toll the Hounds - 5
2. Memories of Ice - 4
3. Reaper’s Gale– 3
4. Deadhouse Gates – 2
5. The Bonehunters – 1

OFFICIAL RANKINGS:
1. Memories of Ice - 95 points
2. Deadhouse Gates - 64 points
3. Midnight Tides - 45 points
4. Toll of the Hounds - 36 points
5. The Bonehunters - 32 points

6. Reaper's Gale - 29 points
6. Gardens of the Moon - 29 points
8. House of Chains - 22 points
9. Return of the Crimson Guard - 9 points
10. Night of Knives - 3 point
11. Blood Follows - 0 points
11. The Healthy Dead - 0 points
11. The Lees of Laughter's End - 0 points

Commentary: The last person's votes were almost indecipherable so I tried my best.

Hopefully this catches on(maybe even sticky it? *crosses fingers*), so get out the vote, if you want to be heard(actually, read)
;)

I think that would be where the phrase

(any novellas are included, as well as anything Esslemont)

is operative. :p

Sorry, give me a minute.
Also, its beyong my mod powers since im only a book mod, but im not really the inn is the best place for any sort of book related stuff.
Perhaps polls or DoD forum would be better?

Nah, because the point value thing really wouldn't be effective, I like this better. The better you like it, the more points it should get, that's how I see it. Just requires some simple adding. Not too complex on my part. ;)

(lol though the adding mistakes may cause bumps, it's simple to fix)

Apoc, im not suggesting that we should change it to poll format, I quite like this way.
Just that the whole topic, as a poll(of sorts) should be moved there.
That wouldnt mean changing it into a poll.

Commentary: It seems Memories of Ice is running away with a lead. Not surprising, since the sheer epic quality of it is astounding, not one, but two insanely epic battles. It's also the last hurrah of the Bridgeburners, their final deed which will go down in history, and the Bridgeburners are a favorite. Also, many emotional and powerful scenes. Deadhouse Gates also doesn't surprise me, the Chain of Dogs is possibly the greatest sequence in Erikson's books. Toll The Hounds is another that doesn't surprise me, though it may get an advantage due to the "newest" syndrome, where we all love it because we want to know the next one so badly. GoTM is what got us hooked on the series so I expect it's place in the top five to be steady. In the Bonehunters, I loved the battle at that city where Leoman torches the place. Very powerful. Anywho.

For example, the inn is meant to be spoiler free, because its a laid back place.
Now, for better discussion and comments, this is bad.

For example:

I like the idea of your commentary.
However, it has a fairly large MoI spoiler(I certainly wouldnt have liked to have know pre reading MOI) , and some other minor(such as BH) spoilers.

So, I feel itd be better of somewhere like the DoD forum, where anything goes, so we can discuss why we like which books etc, and to avoid the risk of spoiling things for people who haven't yet read some of the books.

I agree with Grief, whack it in the DoD forum or somesuch (and sticky it) if there are going to be spoilers. However, have a nice bright linky here and in other forums.

It's a good idea anyway AN, it's just thrown up some unexpected consequences when results are discussed.

Cheers,

La Sombra, voted #1 Malazans Least Wanted

Could one of the mods with the powers in the inn move this into the DoD area, and sticky please?

Well, I DO love RG and I would've given it a 5 as well, but alas I can't do that.

so, I did the next best thing, following the instructions to the letter
after all, don't forget, we currently have to choose top 5 out of 13 books. that's dificult enough, considering the quality, assigning internal rankings to these top 5 is even harder.
If i had to give an absolute answer, as in "just one book", the answer's always MoI and it's always easy. that's 1 out of 13
when we get into several out of 13, it gets exponentially more difficult.

ETA: imagine how hard it will be once the series's done....

I redid the commentary, without spoilers. Also Mentalist you cheeky bastard, I said you can only have a tie between two books, not three. Give me an updated list and I'll change it, but right now, I'll accept it because I'm bored.
