@ Illu, completely off-topic though: where do you fight swords? I mean, I know (or knew) people who used to fence and stuff, but I've never heard of anyone who actually fights with swords the way they must have done in duels in older days... so where do you do this, does it have a specific name of sport?
Or am I completely misunderstanding this and do you in fact not fight with swords on a regular base, but you have done it at least once in the past?

Yeah, he answered me in a pm and that was basically what it came down to indeed :p

On-topic: I think stormbringer is a term here used to say that it doesn't really matter why Rake regretted his killing of Apsalar. just a guess though.

What is Stormbringer?

Stormbringer was a sword that appeared in Michael Moorcocks books. It was actually a demon taking the form of a sword therefore it had a mind and will of it's own. It was also a blodthirsty evil bastard.

EDIT: 100th post - I'm coming for you Apt!

Just to passingly respond to the above vitriol, no one is saying it is and it's hardly everyone. it was just a passing theory on why Rake couldn't just give himself a papercut and save everyone in Darujhistan a whole lot of carnage and death. I don't think anyone ever said Dragnipur has philosophical conversations and goes on hot dates with slutty fencing foils.

- Abyss, ...could otherwise say the sword was a real bastard....

So, is that why it was called Grief? Because it got all depressed after Rake dumped it for Dragnipur?
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Probably. i'm sure it drowned its sorrow in wanton bloodshed and meaningless flings with under-age short swords.

- Abyss, cutting it pretty fine here...

Maybe the sword really was too short for the sheath.

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

Is there text to support peoples assumptions that a papercut would do, I would assume that soul sucking would be reserved for the mortal blow not nicking a finger while sharpening or polishing the blade.

As to the theif there are several moves designed to cut while drawing a sword from its sheath.
Imagine a world without such souls.
Yes, it should have been harder to do.

The only evidence there is for Dragnipur killing with only a scratch is in GotM when one of the Hounds was killed with a blow that didn't look fatal. I'm a bit sceptical to be honest. Unless there's more evidence I think this is the one of the greatest misconceptions we all have.

I'm pretty sure that most descriptions of Dragnipurees are "slain by Dragnipur." So a wound won't be enough.

Uhm... slain just means you were killed. Anyway the question is moot as of TTH.

somewhere in TtH, one of the squatters (possibly Drac) of Dragnipur says that they will not be able to pull the wagon much longer as Rake has stopped KILLING. meaning that Rake has to kill somene for them to inhabit Dragnipur. Anyway theres probably not many people who could fight Rake and get away without being killed. Except Dassem who kicked Rakes ASS!!

You're missunderstanding the situation. The wagon is slowing down because Rake stopped killing. The reason to why this makes the wagon slow down is that the wagon becomes harder to pull as the souls chained to the wagon weaken and fall to the side. This lessens the number pulling the chains but encreases the drag. Meaning ever greater numbers of people or encreasingly powerfull creatures need to be killed to continue the pace needed to keep the wagon away from chaos.

Rake stopped killing because he realised that it couldn't go on for ever and a solution had to be found.

And no, Dassem did not kick Rake's ass, Rake manipulated Dassem into killing him.

He could've kept on killing until he did find said solution though. I just think Rake actually got sick of the killing.

Rake is a draconean soletaken who has been doing the killing with dragnipur for a hundred thousand years... give or take a hundred thousand years. Killing isn't a problem for him.

It is suggested that the reason to why Rake wanted the wagon to slow to a halt was so that the majority of the souls inside would be consumed or at least weakened. Else they risked spilling the malazan equivelant of Pandoras Box onto Burn when the sword was undone.
