Aidan Gillen as Petyr 'Littefinger' Baelish.

"Game of Thrones" is a very exciting major new series for the american TV giants HBO and is produced by the masterminds behind HBO hits "The Sopranos", "Sex and the City" and "Rome" and the films "Troy" and "The Kite Runner".

Based on George R R Martin's best-selling fantasy series "A Song of Ice and Fire", "Game of Thrones" is a dark and complex tale of warring dynasties, epic in scale, with a haunting supernatural element. It is set in a fictitious world reminiscent of Medieval Europe in which magic exists and the seasons can last for many years. The series follows the violent dynastic struggles of an empire in turmoil where political and sexual intrigue are abound. It defies genre and has a large topend cast that includes: Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage, Mark Addy, Lena Headey, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

It is due to be filmed in various locations around Northern Ireland from AUGUST - DECEMBER this year.

Yes, that's Jerome from popular easy listenin' singing duo Robson & Jerome, which is the biggest surprise out of the lot. James Cosmo as Mormont is brilliant though, as is Francis Magee as Yoren, the sort of roles they do a lot.

Most notable roles still to be cast: Tywin and Kevan Lannister, Shae, Shagga, Gendry, Grenn, Rickon Stark, possibly Mirri Maz Duur.

They've also decided not to film in Morocco. Instead, the Daenerys sequences will be filmed in Malta,using some of the castles built by the Knights Hospitaller.

About Jerome Flynn:

I think that's a good choice. Granted he had his karaoke days, but he was originally famous for portraying a soldier, and he has (I think) something of an everyman look about him, which matches Bronn well. He isn't a noble or anything, just a mercenary on the make.

James Cosmo will just be James Cosmo, in every period/action part he's done since Highlander. And that's a good thing.

And as for using Malta?

Seriously, the more we hear, the better I feel about this endeavour.

Castle Black under construction against the side of the Wall (the Wall here being stood in for by the side of Magheramorne quarry at Larne, Northern Ireland). The quarry wall will, of course, be enhanced with CGI and practical effects to turn it into the 700-foot-tall wall of ice from the books.

There's an interesting rumour going around that Steven Erikson - yes, that one - is going to be an extra in the Game of Thrones TV series, riding a horse in a cameo role. Apparently he said this to someone at the recent Czech convention Tricon, but has not been confirmed yet.

This would be interesting and slightly surreal. Maybe some on the board could help confirm or deny this one?

Erikson told WiC that the rumour was actually true, but they left it too long to sort it out, so he won't be appearing in S1 at least. Of course, that doesn't rule out future possibilities :veryangry:

An absolute metric ton of images taken from the previews and behind-the-scenes clips.

Some interesting tidbits from the last month and a half or so of shooting:

They are filming out of order, with the first month of shooting concentrating on Episodes 3-5, including the Hand's Tourney scene (which had over 200 extras present) and several meetings of the King's small council. Some additional footage set at the Wall, featuring Jon Snow's integration into the Night's Watch, has also been filmed, along with several scenes involving Daenerys Targaryen and her adventures on the eastern continent.

Contrary to earlier reports, which suggested that only Dany's scenes would be filmed in Malta and everything else in Northern Ireland, there will be a mixture of scenes spread across the two locations. More of Dany's material will be filmed in Northern Ireland (particularly her scenes crossing the Dothraki Sea and in Vaes Dothrak) whilst some of the Maltese locations will stand in for exterior filming of the city of King's Landing.

A great deal of attention is being paid to fine detail. A shot of Grand Maester Pycelle's desk reveals scrolls bearing the names of previous Targaryen kings (even down to the fact that King Aegon IV left off the honorific 'King of the Rhoynar' due to his dislike of the Dornish), whilst King Robert's crown has a stag motif to reflect the Baratheon heraldic symbol. Eddard's small council seat has the symbol of a hand imprinted on it, whilst Petyr 'Littlefinger' Baelish wears a small clasp in the shape of a mockingbird.

HBO have put up a fresh new video about food in the series and the amount of thought they have put into how food in King's Landing should be different from Winterfell and how both should be different from Castle Black. Impressive stuff. They also confirm that they see King's Landing as very much a more Mediterranean-style climate (at least at this point) than is perhaps gotten across in the books.

Lena Headey also gave this mini-update on her Facebook page:

Beric Dondarrion has been cast with Australian actor David Michael Scott. This is surprising as there seemed to be an expectation that Beric and Thoros were going to be left until Season 3 to be cast (with Beric perhaps being pointed out on the tourney field with his helmet on and being sent on his mission by message rather than directly). Instead HBO seem to have gone for it in Season 1.

That does leave the question of will Thoros also be cast (he could just show up as one of the BwB in Season 3). It also still leaves Walder Frey as, by far, the biggest character not yet cast.

I really hope they keep the dragons out of the first season, so as to avoid the stigma that follows dragons as juvenile fantasy monsters. but The first book had next to no magic, so at the very least they can not ruin the series with lame special effects. like those damn terrible effects that ruined the legend of the seeker...wait. that show was just terrible all over, not just the effects. i am sullied from watching that drivel. There is NO way that the HBO make will be anything near as bad as the Goodkind disaster (though the books set a bad example to begin with).
