Mark Addy doesn't seem to my mind to have the huge physical presence that Robert requires. I'd always pictured him as a really big guy, like one of the big American footballers but gone to seed...

That's exactly how I picture him, SM. Mark Addy doesn't seem to fit the bill.

Only the pilot is being cast at the moment. The remaining major roles to be cast are Bran Stark, Khal Drogo, Grand Maester Pycelle, Ser Rodrik Cassel, Jory, Septa Mordane, Rickon Stark (non-speaking), Myrcella Baratheon (non-speaking), Tommen Baratheon (non-speaking) and of course the ill-fated prologue trio, Ser Waymar Royce, Gared and Will.

Roles like Bronn, Lysa Arryn, Tywin Lannister, Renly, Barristan Selmy etc will not be cast until the series is (hopefully) picked up early next year.

In the meantime, the photoshoppers have been busy:

These three are particularly cool.

I presume the one with " My watch is coming" is Jon. If he is, why does he have a scar near his eye?
Anyway I love Tyrion's picture.

Lena Headey is a very good actress, but she just doesn't do it for me. I thought Cersei was supposed to be tall, blonde and one of the fittest women in the kingdom ? I got very excited when Tricia Helfer's name was bandied about a while ago as she would be absolutley perfect, oh well.

As for the rest of the casting choices they all look solid and this project is really starting to look like it will make the grade. Now for future episodes all they need to do is pick Ed Harris as Tywin Lannister and Jason Isaacs as Roose Bolton and i'll be happy.
Now all the friends that you knew in school they used to be so cool, now they just bore you.
Just look at em' now, already pullin' the plow. So quick to take to grain, like some old mule.

I think a reread of the first book might be in order, I have forgotten what happens and who a bunch of these characters are... :)

I love Lena as Cersei, I am just concerned about her bust size. Lean is not that big in RL where as I thought that Cersei's description in the books had her really big.

That is hilarious.

I'm thinking - and I might be wrong - that the casting directors decided that acting ability was more important than cup size in this particular instance. Since the size of Cersei's breasts do not play a decisive role in the action, the series will probably cope :)

As for Headey's ability to pull off a blonde, Photoshoppers have already given us that answer. Plus she's played blonde several times before and done pretty well.

Bronson Webb has been cast as Will, one of the three members of the Night's Watch who appear in the opening scene of the pilot.

Gared has also been cast, but not announced yet. Apparently they're waiting to close a deal on Ser Waymar Royce as well.

Whilst they'll be on screen for about five minutes maximum, these three roles are important as they set the tone for the whole series.

Mark addy is all kinds of wrong.
I like him, but in light hearted comedies where he plays the awkward tubby one.
For Robert I envisioned a physically large framed man gone fat with too much drinking and not enough war.
Hmm, A slight handsomer John rhys Davies would have been perfect, loud, gruff but likable.

Cersie - I had Tricia Helfer in my head and she was perfect, will withhold verdict until I see how well Lena performs, she can do cold, but can she pull of callous almost inhuman detachment the way Caprica could?

Bean is pretty close to whats needed for ned, the kids look acceoptable exceopt for Joffrey, he looks like to much of a dweeb, isn't he suppposed to be the cool spoiled kid, generally seen in films with slicked back blonde hair and the cheer leader on his arm beating up geeks? blegh

The jon snow one (IO assume) shooped looks great don't care what the scars are about, they look good

I'm also not that fussed about Addy as Bob Baratheon, all I can remember when I read his name is all the numerous chubby flange roles he has played.

For some reason I just picture Robert as Coco's avatar without the wings and helmet !

" The Blessed One " in his prime would have been perfect.

Mark Addy's been in quite a few dark, dramatic series recently, such as Red Riding (with Sean Bean). He also did a docu-drama thing a while back about Arctic explorers which was pretty good. And he played a character in a medieval movie in A Knight's Tale, in which he had a great look for Robert.

I think people immediately thinking that it's Mark Addy who's a comedy character who can't be in a dramatic role is a bit limiting, especially for an actor with such a long career and large body of work. I was seeing the same thing with people complaining about seeing Boromir or Sharpe instead of Ned Stark, whilst Sean Bean's done many more roles than just those. Typecasting from the audience, I guess.

The other issue is that Game of Thrones: The TV Series is going to be it's own entity. If you go into it comparing absolutely everything to the books, you will likely be disappointed, as the hardcore Lord of the Rings fans invariably were back in 2001. From the point of view of the TV show it is irrelevant how big Robert is, as they can change the story to fit Addy as the character. That Robert isn't a 6 foot 6 beserker killing machine doesn't matter because that's Book Robert, not TV Robert. That he was once an effective warrior, that he killed Rhaegar at the Trident, that he hates his wife and loved Lyanna, and that he has some kingly charisma and is Ned's friend is the stuff that should be really important.

Also, apparently his audition tape (him arriving at Winterfell, meeting Ned and going down to the crypt to see Lyanna's tomb) was extremely impressive. That he can sell the character in those moments is far more important than if he should technically be six inches taller than he is.

Thats true, but I disagree with his character in knights tale, he was a comic sidekick there aswell. I haven't seen him do serious so he may well be capable, jsut physically he looks like hes always been the tubby fool, not the warrior gone lardy if you know what I mean, you can't envision a hidden strength there at all.
And whilst there has to be changes from the book, and acting should take preceidence over physical appearance, to try and sell mark addy as a once great warrior who killed Rheagar is a bit much for me

While I kind of agree with Maccy, I can see him pulling it off. We'll just have to wait and see, I guess.

I love these posters...but I lawled bigtime when I saw this one because it made me think of those stupid Evony pop-up ads.

Why September 7th?
Did I miss something?
The leader, his audience still,
considered their scholarly will.
He lowered his head
and with anguish he said,
"But how will we teach them to kill?"

The creator used an existing HBO banner to make it look authentic. September 7th was the date on there already.

The most likely transmission time for the series is some time in the winter of 2010/11, assuming it goes to series.

That Tyrion poster just gives me a thrill. My greatest problem is my wife is going to be so disappointed when Sean Bean's character, well you know and then she will refuse to watch the second season. Hopefully she'll identify enough with Arya to hang in there.
