So I'm getting that it would be advisable to play the main quest through and screw the DLC's...but make sure I have a couple of saves before the end-sequence?

There's still lots of game left, I just didn't want to have to start a new character just for the DLC's.

At what point should I save before the end sequence to be able to continue through broken steel....just before starting up project purity?

That should work - I'm going to download Broken Steel tonight, and see how it works out... I'll let you know.

I've got a few saves before project purity, and I haven't played it since I completed the main quest, so i'm looking forward to carrying on with new levels etc.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Right, so I've downloaded Broken Steel.

It says to play the game to access the new content - I've loaded up a savegame from just before I went off to finish the main quest, and apart from a brief 'downloading new content' message, nothing seems different. If I play the last sequence, does it change?

I still don't know how it can continue after the main quest... anybody done this already?
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Cerveza_fiesta: you can play any of the DLCs at any time after you leave Vault 13, but without Broken Steel the game ends at project purity. With Broken Steel the game continues and you can finish off any quests you didn't do before.
Once you load Broken Steel you can use any save you want, even if it's right at the end it doesn't matter, and you don't need a new character.

Traveler: you have to finish project purity for Broken Steel to start, it only starts after the last scene of the normal game.

Hope that clears it up for you guys.

Thanks for that.

But.. I've finished the main quest, from a save in the rotunda, just before the final choice. The game just finishes as normal, whatever the choice. In the menu the 'downloads' option becomes highlighted though.

When I click on that, it comes up with 'Broken Steel' in the middle of the screen, but nothing happens when I click on it.

Do I need to start from an earlier save?

You have selected it in the data files section of the pre-game menu, yes? After that, WAIT. Not the in-game function, but just stand there (in-game). It can take a while, but it will pop-up and say "Broken Steel is now active" and a short message about your level cap being increased. THEN go through the final sequence, resulting in the 'death' of your character. It doesn't work if you use the FEV, btw.

I load the game as normal from the dashboard; do you mean by pre-game menu the one that appears after the 'press start,' which has the load, continue etc options on it? Because I can only get the 'downloads' option to highlight after I've completed the game.

Unless you mean by pre-game that theres an option before that somewhere... I'll go check.

When you start up FO3 - i.e. put the disk in, the auto-pop-up, or double-click the icon, the bit that starts up with "Play", "Options", "Data Files" and such. You are not even in the game yet. The "Launcher Menu" it's called.
Don't worry about downloads, you don't use that. It's Data Files on the launcher menu you need.

You on the 360?

It's ok, sorted it now. I'd assumed once it downloaded that that was it. I plugged it back into xbox live again while the game was running, and it came up with the message you mentioned.

All working now cheers!

(wish I hadn't done so many missions after I capped at level 20 though - lots of lost XP!)

XD

Bit of a platform-disconnect there, I'd say. Ah well, as long as it worked.

Seriously people...PC's may be relics of the past, but they're also the way of the future!

I have a PC too, I just prefer to play games on a huge HD screen using a decent controller when possible!

Fallout deserves a big screen and a massive sound system

I'm quite enjoying my melee/explosives character. I'm playing the game on very hard, which is much much more rewarding than the lower settings. Now I need to plan how to approach situations, I need to scout and I need to strategically place out mines. A single Death Claw will kill me if I just run against it. Mirelurks can be tricky, and A talon squad can be a bitch if they have a sniper or rocket launcher guy in the back.

Yeah, at least in this game Bethesda made difficulty matter. XD

Mind you, I'm going through the Deathclaw part of Broken Steel (just finished that bit, actually), and that is HORRID. I can bring one down with a full clip of my plasma rife...assuming I hit, and it doesn't kill me first. When I'm running backwards, and another comes through the door behind me...well....you can imagine how that ends. Funnily enough, I'm busy using my plasma rifle (energy weapons at 90) when my small guns skill is at 100. XD
In the end, I just stealth-boy'd my way through there (sneak at 100 + stealth boy supply of immense proportions = win), particularly the bit with ~5 Deathclaw's close together!

And, for the record, you can connect a computer to a large screen and a soundsystem. Then you get the visuals, the sound, AND 3000dpi control! XD

Had such a good session of this yesterday.... ~5hours

Got Dr. Li and her cronies through the tunnels to escape from the Enclave invaders at the Jefferson memorial....blah blah, murdering powersuits and zombies. No biggie. Finally got a Plasma rifle though, which was pretty rad. Good sound effect.

Joined up with the brotherhood at the Citadel, they told me to go to the sewers beside Vault 87 to go find my GECK. On my way however, I got sidetracked and found Evergreen Mills raider camp. My gods, there were like 100 of them in there. Luckily, the raider base was in a canyon with high walls. Out came the snipe rifle and on went the sneak mode. I've never had so much fun with that gun before. Just splattering them over and over. 1 shot sneak attacks rule. By the time I was done with em there was only like 2 guys left wandering around.

Inside was a pretty intense fight too, very fun. Hidden trader inside to repair and sell some of the junk I'd been accumulating. It ended in a giant cavern that was set up like a raider casino. Plus, as a little bonus, you find a Fat Man nuke launcher inside the casino and they put a super mutant behemoth in a convenient electrified cage outside. Shoot the generator that holds him in, whip out the nuke launcher and fire away. He actually took 2 mini-nukes and a grenade to fully kill. Oh yeah, there's some slaves there that you can kill or release, depending on your character. I killed the saps of course. With a mini-nuke.

THEN as if that wasn't enough, while heading north a random Talon merc attacked me, so I found his base, Fort Bannister to exact some retribution. I found out later was the main HQ for Talon company. I cleared it as far as I can tell. There was only one guy there labeled as a "commander something", and he was kinda hard to kill but gave up some good armor. For being a main enemy base, there was surprisingly little loot in there. A shitload dudes though. There was one hallway where I must've killed about 20 of them. They kept coming around the corner at the end and I'd just lob grenades down at them and spray the minigun to clean up the stragglers. Only problem with the Talon guys is that their armor is a bit too good to kill with 1 shot sneaks with the snipe rifle.

Anyways, that left me bug-eyed and head hurting from the gunshots blaring inside my headphones. Good sesh all in all.

The trader in Evergreen Mills holds a unique Combat Shotgun. Well worth killing him for.

Wait until you get the Blackhawk. With relevant perks, it's one headshot kill on Deathclaws. O.o
Or, if you've got Broken Steel, you can get Callahan's Magnum. FTW. FTW.

That commander in the Talon company base has some of the highest stats in the game. However, he is made weaker by his choice of weapon, and low armour. Still a tough battle, though. But the Talon company is not a major enemy per se, so that's why there isn't much loot in there, same with the Regulator base. :p
