The Brotherhood of steel become part of the main quest later on cerveza_fiesta, during the Galaxy radio quest and further on.

I bought this game about a week ago, and I've fallen absolutely in love. Everything that annoyed me with oblivion is gone. There's more variation, a lot more unique places that are not quest related. A lot of awsome awsome place, and the atmosphere is truly brilliant. The amount of times I've had a small stroke as the result of turning and finding a zombie 3 inches from tearing my face off.
Really, if one place summarizes just how awesome this game is, it's the Dunwich building at the very south-western corner of the map. I loves my Lovecraft references and hints of the supernatural. That place was so fucking creepy I didn't know what to do. It was late, it was raining, and god: The zombies that suddenly appear out of nowhere just behind you. Your companion being all spooked and shooting at shadows. Stuff being thrown through the air by seemingly no one. Sudden flashbacks to when the building was whole, and all the while following the narative of the very unfortunate man who entered before you.
Not to mention what you find in the basement..

It doesn't matter how far along you are in the main quest. The DLC are all different questlines, except for Broken Steel, which you can only do after the main quest.
I don't like using vats much unless there are a lot of enemies around. I'd rather use sniper rifles and shot guns.

Unless you don't have Broken Steel and have finished the main quest. Then you're screwed.

@Morgoth - yes, it fixes a lot that was wrong with Oblivion. Much more enjoyable, this one (not that I don't like Oblivion! I spent 6 months of my life playing that game, dammit). Now, if TESV incorporates the improvements...

Is that building in the SW corner a quest?
Hopefully not from Megaton, I blew those bastards to kingdom-come awhile back.

No, it's just there. Non-quest related, which makes it all the more cooler. Just remember, just as you enter, to your left there's a table with 5 holotapes. You should listen to them before moving further in. It's the beginig of a diary of sorts, the narrator so to speak.

I just stumpled upon the republic of Dave the other day, which was quite amusing. I'm considering following through on the main quest at this point so that I can make a new character and still have a lot of the world to explore.
Atm I'm doing a small arms, intelligence/agility character who's more or less invinsible, so i'm planning to create Isaac Selanraw (pick up the reference and get a free cookie), a massive strenght/endurance character who focuses mainly upon melee.
How far into the main quest can you go before you're more or less forced to finish it? And how do you get access to the brotherhood of Steel? I found a nifty, self healing Power Armour I want to use

You can get a really long way in the main quest - basically, once you start the final chapter it just rolls towards the end, but if you don't initiate the end sequence, and save before the final chapter, you can go off and do what you like.
Have you not found the BoS headquarters in the city? It's sort of on the main quest anyway, I think.
(I'm going to have to have another look, I never found that dunwich building...)

You are forced to finish it once Liberty Prime is activated after you join the B of S. You find them after you find your dad and take him to the Jefferson Memorial. The easiest way to get power armor is to get the first DLC. You get Power armor right of the bat.

Make sure you get Dave's key at some point. Only way to get the T-51b armour, with his and a few other's keys.
You are forced from Liberty Prime, but probably won't be able to resist continuing once you have to go into the Vault from the kid's world place. Because that's where it becomes more seemless, imo.

The last DLC Mothership Zeta is now out for PC and Xbox 360. It's pretty fun, and lot's of new weapons, but it's very straight forward, not much exploration.

I downloaded the pit and broken steel, but as far as I can tell neither of these load when I start the game. I even went as far as to make a new character from scratch, but no, no new perks down at the end of the leveling list, and no radio broadcast

Broken Steel only works after you finish the main questline. The Pit should pop up after walking around for a bit. If you've done all that, then I don't know.

Morgoth, you shouldn't have to make a new character, the add-ons don't start until you have left Vault 13. You might have to make sure that the game is patched up too the latest version which is 1.6. If that dosen't work then check to see if you have selected the files to be loaded up with the game.
When the launcher menu pops up, click on Data Files and make sure that the addons are selected. If you can't see them in the list then make sure that the .esm, Main.bsa, and the Sounds.bsa files for each addon are in the Fallout3 - Data directory. If that doesn't work them i don't know.

Broken steel only takes effect after the main Questline is completed, once you "finish" the game, you can start the quest.

Traveller you can download any of the DLC's without having to use any of the others, but without Broken Steel the game still ends at the water pump. I'm not going to tell you how Broken Steel continues the main quest, but you don't need a new character, just reload one of your saves.
Also soon after it starts, the game play goes back to the open world and you can do the alien quest or any others that you have missed.

Cheers, Broken Steel it is then.
The alien quest I was referring to was the newest downloadable one - where you have to fight your way out of an alien ship!
Good to know it carries on though, I think I've got more left to explore.
