but kuru quan wasnt preparing a ritual to defeat enemys but only to trap the demon under the ice. thats why he sat on the floor for that time. i think this has nothing to do with the fight.

The ritual was indeed for the demon that was used by the Edur when they were conquering Lethar.

He was lying curled tight on the floor and everyone thought that he had gone mad, but he was busy with creating the bait for the demon and with keeping the illusion going untill the demon arrived.

Still love the sentence later on: Good things came of being nice to a Jaghut, something the T'lan Imass never understood.
Sappers have a saying, he muttered. "Wide eyed stupid"

He was doing two things.

One, making a trap for the demon with the help of Mael and the Huntress. And two focusing the power of the Empty Hold in the tile he was lying on.

When he faced the Warlock King, he was litterally standing on a gate of power, meaning he had an endless supply of magic at his disposal to fight Hanan Mosag with. With that power he would have removed the Edur from the face of Wu, had Trull not thrown that spear.

Would he have "removed" all the Edur, or just annhilated every single one in Letheras?

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

You can say a lot of nice things about Kuru Quan, but he wasn't just going to teleport them out of there...

What? Why, because he helped Karsa kill Rhulad? Or because he tried to warn the Errant against what he was doing?

I forget why... :p

EDIT: I think because his character changed somewhat. He just seemed nicer (sounds dumb I know) in MT.

Trying to help Feather Witch probably did the trick...

Thanks for adding to my kiska has potential hope. Was that a cadre mage of the BB's or a squad mage? I was all set to pick up the book again and hunt for quotes when I realized I lent the book out to a friend.

I remember now that her name was Corinn. I think she was a squad mage, so not too powerful or anything, but strong enough. Anyways, the magic Kiska broke wasn't put there by Corinn either, it were spells by Tay and Kelanved themselves she basically resisted... rather impressive to me.

Without the Fisherman wouldn't the Stormriders constantly attack Malaz unimpeded? All evidence points to a demise...but no body and no sentence that has and the Fisherman died in it. These are elder powers unknown in the current world. I am holding out hope because that might be all I can do. Maybe I can bribe Erickson or ICE to put him back into the books. It worked for WJ.

I doubt it. First off, weird powers were converging on Malaz Island that night... the Stormriders probably just wanted a ticket along with the ride. They got heavily opposed however, lost thousands and thousands of their warriors... big chance they just didn't feel like attacking Malaz Isle again (though they got pretty close to taking it indeed).
Also, it was hinted the Stormriders didn't just want to get passed Malaz Island, they wanted to get to the Deadhouse.

Ah well, I'm just guessing the Stormriders underestimated the powers still left on Malaz and won't be trying that one again for a long time. They're probably rather occupied at Korel anyways.

And about the Fisherman still being alive: small chance. He obviously had a special connection with his wife (she had to sing for him in order for him to be that powerful I believe). His wife was found to be a wifesicle at the end, that is probably the biggest proof you have that the Fisherman in his turn must have become a Fishermansicle too. Of course, nobody ever is completely dead in these Malazan books :p

Would the Stormriders have stopped at Malaz City? Or kept going?

Well, that's the question isn't it? In NoK they hinted the Stormriders were actually after the Azath, not after the isle itself. This would mean the Stormriders wouldn't necesairly go beyond Malaz Island in a physical way (so they perhaps wouldn't really keep on swimming until they're out of the bay) but they might just do some crazy ass shit with the whole warren system. (image the Stormriders ruling the Realm of Shadow... now that would be a weird thought...)

And now I'm wondering if the Hounds of Shadow can actually swim and breath under water... hmmm...

I thought the Stormriders were there to get Jhenna? They might have used the warren afterwards. But there has to be a connection between a Jaghut Tyrant breaking free and the stormriders comming that very day.

Ah, intresting thought... hadn't made that connection yet. I just thought Jhenna was trying to escape at that point because she thought it convenient :)

Hmm... Jhenna breaking out of Azath... Stormriders being hinted to go after the Azath... yeah, could be the Stormriders wanted to help Jhenna out. But to do what? I mean, it's said the Stormriders are children or something like that of the Jaghut (they do seem to use the same magic anyway) but would they really go through that much trouble to save 'mommy'? Sure, Jhenna was a pretty powerful Jaghut (and important too it seems, since she tought the humans a lot too she says) but it seems like a weird gamble to make for the Stormriders.

Me confused :(

I'm guessing that the Jaghut Tyrants are also tyrants in Omotose Phellack. So they perhaps consider her a god, a leader for them to follow.

Of course they may also have just killed her... who knows.

Jhenna called the Stormriders uncertain allies, but she might have meant more that she was counting on them doing better so she could make use of the diversion, and not that she ever actually communicated a pact between them or any such. I always thought the Stormriders were after the Shadow Realm (or something in it or what have you) as their progress was matched in the Shadow Realm such that Edgewalker abandoned protecting Shadow House to stand guard against them...

Oh and by the way, you guys are getting the fisherman (Toben is his name) a bit wrong. It's not that he gets any power from the inhabitants of Malaz Isle, it's that he has never gone out to confront the Riders before, but the lack of practitioners left on the island has forced his hand and so he has to do what he can.

No... I'm pretty sure that the book implies that the Fisherman has always stood against the tide but he had more talent to draw upon. In the past Obo and Agayla weren't needed when the Stormriders came.

It'd be funny if the Stormriders claimed Malaz Island and the door of the Deadhouse opened, sucking them in like water down a sink... :)
